odsole70.dll Missing: Repair the Right SQL Server Installation

odsole70.dll is a Microsoft SQL Server binary, not a normal Windows system file, and the safest fix is to repair the SQL Server instance that owns it. Do not download a replacement DLL or copy one into System32; first determine whether the caller is local SQL Server, an unsupported Azure or Linux service, or another application using SQL Server components.

What this file actually does

odsole70.dll is the OLE Automation driver containing SQL Server sp_OA extended stored procedures. Procedures such as sp_OACreate and sp_OAMethod allow SQL Server to work with OLE Automation objects, and Microsoft documents that this activity runs inside the SQL Server Database Engine process.

The file ships with Microsoft SQL Server and is published by Microsoft Corporation. It is versioned with SQL Server, so there is no single universal copy that works with every installation. A known SQL Server 2014-era record is 64-bit version 2014.120.2000.8, but that is not a current or architecture-independent replacement.

Microsoft SQL Server servicing manifests list Odsole70.dll as part of SQL Server builds. The correct copy depends on:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The SQL Server instance using it
  • The installed SQL Server release and edition
  • Whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • The service pack or cumulative update level
  • Whether the file itself is missing or one of its dependencies cannot load

This is why a loose DLL downloaded from an unrelated source is often the wrong repair.

Causes and symptoms

What you see Most likely explanation Correct direction
Msg 17750 from sp_OACreate or sp_OAMethod SQL Server cannot load odsole70.dll or a dependency Repair the matching SQL Server instance
Could not load the DLL odsole70.dll, or one of the DLLs it references The named file may be present while a dependent file is missing Check setup logs, security software, and dependencies
A program says the DLL is missing at startup The program may depend on a local SQL Server component or bundled database feature Identify the calling program before repairing anything
The failure began after SQL Server patching or removal An incomplete update, uninstall, or installer-cache problem may have damaged shared files Repair from matching SQL Server media
The error occurs against Azure SQL Database or Azure SQL Managed Instance The requested on-premises OLE Automation environment is not available in the same way Change the design or run the workload on a supported local platform
The error occurs on SQL Server for Linux A Windows SQL Server DLL cannot be assumed to work on Linux Use a supported alternative rather than copying the file
Only sp_OACreate fails after a clean installation OLE Automation may be disabled Check the SQL Server configuration
Antivirus recently quarantined the file Security software may have removed a genuine SQL Server binary Confirm the event, then repair SQL Server and investigate the detection

Before repairing: identify what is actually failing

Do not start by searching the whole computer for odsole70.dll. Start with the error source.

If SQL Server reports error 17750

The important portion is usually similar to:

Msg 17750, Level 16, State 0, Procedure sp_OACreate
Could not load the DLL odsole70.dll, or one of the DLLs it references.
Reason: 2(The system cannot find the file specified.).

The same type of error can appear for sp_OAMethod. The phrase “or one of the DLLs it references” matters. It does not prove that odsole70.dll itself is absent.

If you can connect to the affected Database Engine, run:

SELECT
    SERVERPROPERTY('MachineName') AS MachineName,
    SERVERPROPERTY('InstanceName') AS InstanceName,
    SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') AS ProductVersion,
    SERVERPROPERTY('ProductLevel') AS ProductLevel,
    SERVERPROPERTY('Edition') AS Edition,
    SERVERPROPERTY('EngineEdition') AS EngineEdition;

Record the result before making changes. You need the instance name, release, edition, architecture, and servicing level when selecting repair media or updates. Microsoft maintains SQL Server release and update information in its SQL Server build and update history.

If a normal Windows application reports the error

Note the application name and the moment the error appears.

  • If the application installs or manages SQL Server, repair that SQL Server installation first.
  • If the application has its own database engine, use the application vendor’s repair or reinstall process.
  • If there is no SQL Server installation on the computer, do not assume the file belongs in Windows. The application may have an incomplete installation, may be invoking a remote database, or may be displaying a misleading dependency error.
  • If the program itself was recently updated or removed, reinstalling that program may be the definitive fix.

Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10, and search for SQL Server and the affected application. You can also open Services by pressing Win + R, entering:

services.msc

Look for services named SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) or SQL Server (instance name). A named SQL Server service helps confirm which local instance is involved.

Check the platform

The repair path is different depending on where the database runs.

  • Local SQL Server on Windows: repair the matching instance.
  • SQL Server Express or a related local installation: identify the installed instance and repair its corresponding feature.
  • Azure SQL Database or Azure SQL Managed Instance: do not try to install odsole70.dll on the client computer. The on-premises OLE Automation environment is not provided in the same way, and the solution is usually to replace the OLE Automation workload or move it to a supported local SQL Server design.
  • SQL Server on Linux: this Windows DLL is not a portable component. Use a supported external service or another feature available on that platform.

Fix 1: repair the affected SQL Server instance

This is the safest and most likely fix for a local Windows SQL Server installation.

You need SQL Server installation media that matches the installed release and edition as closely as possible. If the original media is unavailable, use the organization’s approved Microsoft SQL Server installation source. Do not substitute a random DLL from another machine.

Repair through SQL Server Setup

  1. Sign in with an account that has local administrator rights.
  2. Close applications that connect to the affected SQL Server instance.
  3. Mount or open the matching SQL Server installation media.
  4. Right-click setup.exe and select Run as administrator.
  5. In SQL Server Installation Center, select Maintenance.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Choose the affected SQL Server instance.
  8. Allow Setup to run its checks.
  9. Continue through the repair wizard.
  10. Restart Windows if Setup requests it.
  11. Start the SQL Server service if it is not running.
  12. Retry the original sp_OACreate, sp_OAMethod, or application operation.

Microsoft’s documented SQL Server repair procedure is the authoritative path. Repair is designed to replace missing or corrupt SQL Server files, registry keys, and invalid configuration values while preserving the instance configuration where possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Command-line repair

For a controlled repair, Microsoft documents this form:

setup.exe /q /ACTION=Repair /INSTANCENAME=<instancename>

Replace <instancename> with the actual SQL Server instance name. For the default instance, the name is commonly MSSQLSERVER, but verify it rather than guessing.

Run the command from an elevated Command Prompt opened in the SQL Server media directory. Microsoft’s SQL Server command-line setup syntax explains the available setup parameters.

A successful repair should complete without a failed feature status, restore the SQL Server component, and allow the original procedure to execute. If Setup asks for a source file or reports that Windows Installer cache files are missing, stop and address that condition rather than copying files manually. Microsoft provides guidance for missing Windows Installer cache files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: apply the matching SQL Server service pack or cumulative update

Repair restores the installed product, but the instance may still need its appropriate servicing level.

Do not select a file based only on the name odsole70.dll or on the observed 2014.120.2000.8 version. Confirm the installed SQL Server release and architecture first, then use the corresponding Microsoft package.

For SQL Server 2014, Microsoft provides separate packages for the two architectures:

SQLServer2014SP3-KB4022619-x86-ENU.exe
SQLServer2014SP3-KB4022619-x64-ENU.exe

SQL Server 2014 SP3 is build 12.0.6024.0, and the package must match the installed architecture and edition. Microsoft lists the packages on the SQL Server 2014 SP3 Download Center page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After applying the appropriate service pack or cumulative update:

  1. Restart the computer if requested.
  2. Open SQL Server Management Studio or another approved client.
  3. Run the version query again.
  4. Retry the failing procedure.
  5. Check SQL Server Setup logs if the update fails.

A 32-bit component is not interchangeable with a 64-bit component. Even when the filename is identical, the binary, dependencies, installation path, and servicing branch can differ.

Fix 3: check whether OLE Automation is simply disabled

A missing-file error and a disabled feature are different problems. OLE Automation is disabled by default for new SQL Server instances.

If the DLL is present and the installation is healthy, check the configuration from a privileged SQL Server connection:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
EXECUTE sp_configure 'show advanced options', 1;
RECONFIGURE;

EXECUTE sp_configure 'Ole Automation Procedures';

If the config_value and run_value are both 0, enable the feature only if the workload genuinely requires it:

EXECUTE sp_configure 'Ole Automation Procedures', 1;
RECONFIGURE;

Retry the operation. If it now works, the original problem was configuration rather than a missing file.

Microsoft documents this setting in Ole Automation Procedures Server Configuration Option.

OLE Automation runs in the Database Engine process. That creates security and stability considerations, so avoid enabling it broadly just to silence an error. Where practical, move the work into an external application or service that can handle HTTP requests, file operations, or COM interaction outside the database engine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: check antivirus quarantine and security history

A security product may have quarantined a genuine SQL Server file, or it may have blocked a dependent component.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security in Windows 11, or Update & Security in Windows 10.
  3. Select Windows Security.
  4. Open Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Search for an event involving odsole70.dll or the SQL Server installation directory.
  7. Record the detection name, path, and action.
  8. Do not restore the file blindly.
  9. Confirm that the file belongs to the installed SQL Server package.
  10. Repair or update SQL Server from official media after resolving the detection.

If the file was quarantined, restoring it may allow a short-term test, but it does not repair the installation or explain why the security product removed it. Coordinate exclusions with the organization’s security policy and investigate the detection before allowing the service to run.

Fix 5: repair Windows components only when Windows is also damaged

odsole70.dll belongs to SQL Server, so SFC and DISM are not the primary repair tools for this particular file. Use them when Windows itself reports missing or corrupt protected components, or when SQL Server Setup is failing because the operating system component store is unhealthy.

Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin):

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish, then run:

sfc /scannow

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The documented steps are in Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.

Restart Windows after both commands complete, then retry SQL Server Setup or the original application.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through repeated SFC and DISM results by showing what it finds; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing the SQL Server installation.

If SFC reports that it repaired files but odsole70.dll still cannot load, return to SQL Server Setup repair. Do not expect Windows component repair to restore a SQL Server-owned binary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: investigate dependencies instead of replacing the named file

SQL Server error 17750 explicitly allows for a missing dependency. The named DLL may exist while another module, registry entry, or system component prevents it from loading.

Use this sequence:

  1. Confirm the SQL Server instance and build.
  2. Check the SQL Server Setup logs for the affected feature.
  3. Check antivirus history.
  4. Confirm that the file path belongs to the SQL Server installation.
  5. Have a qualified technician use an approved dependency-analysis tool.
  6. Repair the SQL Server feature after identifying the missing dependency.
  7. Reboot and test again.

Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable packages, DirectX, or unrelated runtime libraries merely because a DLL error appears. No verified evidence establishes those packages as a universal fix for odsole70.dll.

Fix 7: update or reinstall an associated application or driver only when evidence points there

odsole70.dll is not a conventional graphics, audio, printer, chipset, or other hardware-driver DLL. Device Manager will not normally repair a SQL Server binary.

However, if the affected program also reports device failures, crashes after a hardware-driver update, or shows a separate driver warning, repair that driver independently:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the relevant hardware category.
  3. Right-click the affected device.
  4. Select Properties and inspect the General and Driver tabs.
  5. Use Roll Back Driver if the problem began immediately after an update and the button is available.
  6. Otherwise select Update driver, or download the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
  7. If the installation is damaged, select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the approved driver package.
  8. Test the hardware and the application again.

Outbyte Driver Updater can help identify stale drivers when manually checking dozens of devices is impractical; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional and does not replace SQL Server repair.

Do not expect a hardware-driver update to restore odsole70.dll unless diagnostics show that the application error is being misreported by a broader damaged installation.

What not to do

Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64

Those folders are not general-purpose storage for application DLLs. Copying the file there can create version conflicts, architecture mismatches, and confusing future repairs.

Do not download a loose DLL

Random DLL download sources can provide malware, an incorrect build, the wrong architecture, or a file with missing dependencies. A replacement may also conceal a damaged SQL Server installation and be removed again during the next update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use SQL Server Setup media, Microsoft SQL Server service packs, and Microsoft cumulative updates instead.

Do not use regsvr32 routinely

odsole70.dll is loaded by SQL Server as an extended-procedure and OLE Automation driver. Microsoft does not document it as a standalone COM DLL that should be registered with regsvr32.

Running commands such as these is therefore not a normal repair:

regsvr32 odsole70.dll
regsvr32 /i odsole70.dll

Registration errors or missing entry-point messages do not repair SQL Server installation metadata.

When SQL Server 2014 is involved

SQL Server 2014 reached the end of ordinary extended support on July 9, 2024, according to Microsoft’s SQL Server 2014 lifecycle page.

If the affected instance is SQL Server 2014, repair it with matching media and apply the appropriate service pack or approved update. Also consider a planned migration to a supported SQL Server release rather than repeatedly repairing an aging installation.

How to confirm the repair worked

The repair is successful when all applicable checks pass:

  1. The SQL Server service starts normally.
  2. SQL Server Setup reports a successful repair.
  3. The version query returns the expected instance information.
  4. The original sp_OACreate or sp_OAMethod call no longer returns error 17750.
  5. The dependent application starts without the missing-DLL message.
  6. No new antivirus quarantine event appears.
  7. SQL Server error logs do not show a recurring load failure.

If the error remains, collect the SQL Server Setup logs, exact instance name, product version, edition, architecture, full error text, antivirus event details, and whether the workload runs on local Windows SQL Server, Azure SQL, or Linux. That evidence will distinguish a damaged installation from an unsupported platform or a missing dependency.

FAQ

Does odsole70.dll come with Windows?

No. It is associated with Microsoft SQL Server, not a normal standalone Windows component. Do not place it in C:WindowsSystem32.

Is odsole70.dll a virus?

The filename alone does not establish whether a file is genuine or malicious. Verify its location, digital signature, SQL Server installation source, and antivirus history. The safest replacement is SQL Server repair from approved Microsoft media.

Why does sp_OACreate fail even though the file exists?

The file may be the wrong architecture or build, a dependency may be missing, antivirus may be blocking it, or OLE Automation may be disabled. Error 17750 specifically allows for a missing referenced DLL.

Can I fix it with regsvr32?

Generally, no. This file is not documented as a standalone COM DLL requiring routine registration. Repair SQL Server instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the 64-bit 2014.120.2000.8 file the correct replacement?

Not automatically. It is one observed SQL Server 2014-era version, not a universal version. Match the installed SQL Server release, architecture, edition, and servicing level.

Will SFC or DISM restore the file?

Usually not. They repair protected Windows files and the Windows component store. Use SQL Server Setup repair for this SQL Server-owned binary.

What if the database is Azure SQL?

Do not install `odsole70.dll on the client computer. Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance do not provide the same on-premises OLE Automation environment. Replace the OLE Automation operation with a supported design or run it against a supported local SQL Server platform.

What if only one application needs the file?

Identify whether that application installed or invokes SQL Server. If the application has its own repair option, use it after confirming the dependency. If the application itself is damaged, reinstalling it may be the definitive fix; a loose DLL remains unsafe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is this something Device Manager can repair?

No, not normally. odsole70.dll is a SQL Server binary rather than a conventional hardware-driver file. Use Device Manager only for separate, verified hardware-driver problems.
