They describe Nerial as entering “hibernation mode,” not as a permanent exit from game development: the founders plan to take a break and may return with a new perspective. Devolver acquired Nerial in 2021, but the available statements do not specify the exact rights it retains over the studio’s catalogue.
What Nerial’s founders announced
In a statement reproduced by Gematsu on October 1, 2026, founders Tamara and François Alliot said: “After 13 years and 11 published games, we have decided together with our partners at Devolver to end development at the studio.” The 13-year and 11-game figures are the founders’ characterization, as quoted in the report.
The announcement thanks the Nerial team and its collaborators, says team members will seek new opportunities, and describes the founders taking a break before returning with a new perspective. “Hibernation mode” and ending development at the studio describe the decision now; they do not establish that the founders are leaving game development permanently.
What happens to Nerial’s games and catalogue?
Devolver’s relationship with Nerial is documented: its 2021 admission document says it acquired the studio in May 2021 and had published Reigns and continued to publish Nerial titles (Devolver Digital admission document). That history supports describing Devolver as Nerial’s owner and publishing partner at the time, but it does not spell out the legal scope of rights following the 2026 decision.

The founders’ announcement names games and adaptations associated with Nerial, but neither that statement nor Devolver’s current games catalogue is a rights notice. The material available does not establish that Devolver owns every game, franchise, sequel, adaptation, or merchandise right. So while Nerial’s catalogue remains closely associated with Devolver, the exact rights it retains have not been specified in the cited 2026 announcement.
Games that mark Nerial’s history
Nerial says it began making games in 2013 and identifies Reigns, released in 2016, as its first commercial success. Its About page identifies Card Shark as a 2022 release. The founders’ announcement also names licensed Reigns adaptations based on Game of Thrones, Animal Farm, and Three Kingdoms, alongside Reigns: The Witcher and The Crush House.

Reigns: The Witcher was a collaboration among Nerial, Devolver Digital, and CD Projekt RED. In a March 6, 2026 article, CD Projekt RED listed the game as available for PC, Mac, iOS, and Android. The company also quoted Nerial creative director François Alliot discussing an early design choice: “Initially we tried to stay away from the core Witcher games with a loop centered around a random witcher school.”
