Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If neroapi.dll is missing, not found, or will not load, repair or reinstall the Nero application that requests it rather than downloading a loose DLL. neroapi.dll is a Nero application component, not a Windows system file, and the correct fix is usually a matching Nero installer or a clean Nero reinstall.
What this file actually does
neroapi.dll is described as Nero Library and is associated most strongly with Nero Burning ROM and related Nero utilities. The historical publisher was Ahead Software AG, the company associated with the Ahead-branded Nero products.

This is an application DLL. It should normally remain in the Nero installation folder, not in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or another shared Windows directory.
Public file records identify a 32-bit Win32 build, including version 9.4.26.100 at approximately 2.72 MB. Other records list older builds with different versions and sizes. That matters because there is no single universal neroapi.dll that is safe to substitute for every Nero release.

A 64-bit version of Windows can run a 32-bit Nero program. The operating system’s bitness does not tell you that the Nero program needs a 64-bit copy of this file.
Causes and symptoms
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because neroapi.dll is missing from your computer” | Incomplete or damaged Nero installation | Repair or reinstall Nero |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because neroapi.dll was not found” | The file was removed, quarantined, or the application points to an old folder | Check Windows Security, then reinstall the affected Nero product |
| “Error loading neroapi.dll. The specified module could not be found” | The DLL may exist, but another dependency is missing | Reinstall Nero and read the complete error |
| The error began after removing an older Nero version | Leftover files or registry entries | Use Nero FirstAidKit, restart, and reinstall |
| The error appeared after antivirus activity | Windows Security or another antivirus quarantined the file | Review Protection history before restoring anything |
A different error names MSVCP, MSVCR, or VCRUNTIME |
A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime dependency is missing | Install the appropriate Microsoft runtime |
| Nero starts but cannot detect a disc burner | Drive, firmware, service, or driver problem | Check Device Manager and Nero’s hardware settings |
| A message appears even though Nero is uninstalled | A stale startup entry or remaining Nero utility is launching | Remove the remaining Nero component or startup entry |
Reported wording also includes “NEROAPI.DLL was not found,” “There was a problem starting neroapi.dll,” and “neroapi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” The exact wording depends on Windows and on the executable calling the file.
Before changing anything, note the application name shown in the error. It may be Nero Burning ROM, an older Nero utility, NeroCmd, or a third-party program that bundled or calls Nero components.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFix 1: Repair the installed Nero program
Use the normal Windows repair route first if Nero is still listed as installed.
- Press
Windowskey and type Control Panel. - Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Find the Nero product associated with the error.
- Right-click it and choose Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the same Nero program that produced the error.
If Repair is unavailable, right-click the entry and choose Change. Use the repair or maintenance option if the Nero installer provides one.
If neither option exists, uninstall the affected Nero product and restart Windows. Do not delete random DLLs from Windows folders. After restarting, obtain the installer for the same Nero generation from Nero’s official download center or official installer archive. Older Nero releases may require the original serial number, account details, or installation media.
How to tell whether repair worked
The repair succeeded if Nero opens without the neroapi.dll message and its normal features load. If the error changes to the name of another DLL, do not copy that file from a download site. The changed message usually identifies the next missing dependency or an incomplete installation.
Fix 2: Reinstall Nero with the correct installer
A reinstall is the most reliable solution when the file is absent, corrupted, or from the wrong Nero generation.
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the Nero product that displays the error.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Complete the removal process.
- Restart Windows, even if the uninstaller does not require it.
- Preserve your Nero serial number or account information before continuing.
- Download the matching installer from Nero’s official download center or official installer-links page.
- Prefer the offline installer when one is available for your Nero generation.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation using the default application location unless Nero’s instructions say otherwise.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program again.
Do not assume that the newest Nero installer will repair every older application that once used neroapi.dll. The affected executable and the DLL must belong to compatible product generations.
If the program is not listed in Programs and Features, search the Start menu for Nero, inspect the old installation folder, and check which executable is named in the error. Then install the appropriate Nero product rather than placing a DLL beside an unrelated program.
Fix 3: Use Nero FirstAidKit for failed old installations
Old Nero installations often leave behind files and registry entries that block a clean reinstall. Nero provides its Nero FirstAidKit for removing those remnants.
Use this cleanup path when:
- Nero uninstall fails
- the installer says an older Nero version is already present
- repair completes but the same DLL error remains
- several Nero generations have been installed
- reinstalling produces conflicting or inconsistent errors
The safe sequence is:
- Back up your Nero serial number, account information, project files, and personal data.
- Obtain
NeroFirstAidKit.zipfrom Nero’s official support instructions. - Extract the ZIP file to a temporary folder.
- Right-click the FirstAidKit executable and select Run as administrator.
- Use the default cleanup option unless Nero’s instructions tell you otherwise.
- Allow the cleanup to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Install Nero again from the matching official installer.
- Restart once more and test the application.
FirstAidKit removes Nero-related files and registry entries. Do not run it casually if you still need settings or data from an existing installation.
If the clean reinstall still fails, write down the exact executable producing the message and the complete new error. A new error naming a Microsoft runtime or another dependency is useful evidence, not proof that another random DLL should be downloaded.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate application file, but a file named neroapi.dll should not be restored solely because its name matches the error.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an event involving the Nero installation folder or
neroapi.dll. - Expand the event and read the detection details.
- Restore the file only if you have verified that it came from a legitimate Nero installer and the detection is a false positive.
- If appropriate, reinstall Nero from its official source after addressing the detection.
- Run a full security scan.
Microsoft explains the available actions in Protection History.
Recommended Free Tools
If Windows Security repeatedly removes the file, do not create an exclusion immediately. Investigate the detection, scan the installer, and confirm that the installer was obtained from Nero. If malware or file-system damage is suspected, remove the threat and perform a clean Nero installation.
Fix 5: Check for a missing secondary dependency
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that neroapi.dll itself is absent. Windows may find the file but fail to load one of the libraries it needs.
First, check the folder where the affected Nero executable is installed. If neroapi.dll is present, do not copy another version over it. Instead:
- Note the complete error message.
- Look for another filename named in the message or Windows Event Viewer.
- Repair or reinstall the affected Nero product.
- If the error names
MSVCP*.dll,MSVCR*.dll, orVCRUNTIME*.dll, install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable that matches the application. - For this 32-bit Nero component, start with Microsoft’s x86 Visual C++ Redistributable rather than installing only the x64 package.
- Restart Windows and test Nero again.
Use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Older Nero releases may depend on an older runtime, so the filename alone cannot establish the exact package required.
There is no evidence that every neroapi.dll error is caused by Visual C++. Install a runtime when the error or installation evidence points to it, not as a blind first step.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows component corruption
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party Nero DLL, so use them when several applications have missing or corrupted system files, Windows features are malfunctioning, or the problem began with broader system corruption.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Nero again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its system file repair instructions.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and retest. If both commands complete without resolving the Nero error, return to the Nero repair or FirstAidKit path. Repeating SFC against a missing application-owned DLL will not replace it.

Reinstalling Nero remains the definitive fix for a missing Nero-owned file.
Fix 7: Check architecture and installation location
Public records identify neroapi.dll as a 32-bit DLL. That fits a 32-bit Nero application even when Windows 11 or Windows 10 is 64-bit.
Do not choose a replacement based only on the file’s size or on whether the filename looks correct. A random DLL can be the wrong build, incompatible with the calling executable, or unsafe.
To identify the program involved:
- Read the full error dialog and note the application name.
- Right-click the Nero shortcut and choose Open file location.
- Right-click the executable and choose Properties.
- Open the Details tab and record the product information.
- Check whether
neroapi.dllis in the same Nero installation folder. - Use the matching Nero installer to repair that installation.
Do not copy a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit Nero folder. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32 or SysWOW64. Reinstalling the application is the correct way to restore the architecture-matched file.

Fix 8: Check optical-drive drivers only for drive-detection problems
A driver reinstall is relevant when Nero opens but cannot detect an optical drive. It is not a primary repair for a missing neroapi.dll message.
To inspect the drive:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- Right-click the optical drive.
- Choose Properties and read the device status.
- If Windows reports a driver problem, right-click the device and choose Update driver.
- If that does not help, choose Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows so it can detect the hardware again.
- Test Nero.
Do not remove chipset or storage drivers merely because neroapi.dll is missing. Fix the Nero installation first.
When identifying stale drivers across hardware is the difficult part, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers need attention; its free scan identifies candidates, while installation is handled by the full version. A driver update will not replace a missing Nero application DLL.
Why downloading neroapi.dll is usually the wrong fix
Avoid DLL download sites websites and isolated file packages. They can provide:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- the wrong Nero generation
- the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- a file modified or bundled with malware
- a DLL that loads but does not match the rest of the installation
- a file that leaves the real missing dependency untouched
A loose replacement also does not restore Nero’s registry entries, services, installation files, licenses, or related libraries.
The safe sources are Nero’s official download center, Nero’s official installer archive, and the original Nero installation media or account. For Windows components and runtimes, use Microsoft sources.
Why regsvr32 does not fix this error
Do not run:
regsvr32 neroapi.dll
as a generic repair step. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A normal application or runtime DLL may not provide that function, producing a registration error without repairing the application.
Microsoft documents this distinction in its regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance. Restore neroapi.dll through the Nero installer instead.
If Nero is no longer installed
If the error appears during Windows startup but you no longer use Nero, a leftover Nero utility or startup entry may still be launching.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Startup.
- Disable an identifiable Nero startup entry.
- Open Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for remaining Nero components.
- Uninstall components you no longer need.
- Restart Windows.
If the entry is not visible there, use Task Manager > Startup apps and inspect the executable path. Remove only entries you can identify as obsolete Nero software. Do not download neroapi.dll just to silence a stale startup call.
If the old Nero release will not run on current Windows
Some obsolete Nero releases may not be compatible with a current Windows installation, and an official installer for the exact old generation may no longer be available.
Try the following in order:
- Confirm the executable and Nero generation.
- Install the latest compatible Nero release available from Nero.
- Right-click the program shortcut and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Use Run this program in compatibility mode only if the application’s documentation or testing supports it.
- Select Run this program as an administrator if the program requires elevated access.
- Test again.
If the program remains unusable, keep the original project files and licensing information, then migrate to a supported Nero release or another current application. Do not force an unknown DLL into the old program folder.

Is neroapi.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Nero software and should normally be installed with the Nero application that uses it.
Is neroapi.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public records identify a 32-bit Win32 build. The calling program and DLL must be compatible. A 32-bit Nero application can run on 64-bit Windows.
Which program needs neroapi.dll?
Nero Burning ROM is the strongest association, but related Nero applications, utilities, and programs that call Nero components may also request it. The executable named in the error identifies the affected installation.
Should I put neroapi.dll in System32?
No. Keep it with the Nero installation that owns it. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or a random application folder can create version and architecture conflicts.
Will SFC restore neroapi.dll?
Normally no. SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components, not ordinary third-party Nero application files.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only when the error also names a Visual C++ runtime such as MSVCP, MSVCR, or VCRUNTIME, or when the Nero installer identifies that dependency. For a 32-bit application, the x86 package is normally the relevant starting point.
What if Windows Security quarantined the file?
Review Protection history and verify the file came from a legitimate Nero installation. Restore it only after confirming the detection is a false positive, then repair or reinstall Nero if necessary.
What if reinstalling Nero does not help?
Use Nero FirstAidKit, restart, and reinstall the matching product again. If the error persists, identify the exact executable, inspect the full error for a secondary dependency, review antivirus history, and check whether the old Nero release is compatible with your Windows version.
