Netcraft Extension is a free browser add-on for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera that checks websites against Netcraft’s malicious-site intelligence. It can warn about or block phishing pages, fake shops, credential-leak attempts, shopping-site skimmers, cryptominers, and other malicious scripts. Its Site Report also exposes historical Heartbleed and TLS information, including whether a server appeared vulnerable before Heartbleed was disclosed and whether its certificate was reissued.
The extension is useful as a browser-level warning and reporting layer, not as a guarantee that every dangerous page will be detected. Netcraft’s published materials do not provide a current phishing-block percentage or extension accuracy rate.

What the Netcraft Extension does
The extension combines Netcraft’s continuously updated anti-phishing feeds with browser-side checks and community reporting. When you visit a site, it can compare the destination with known malicious infrastructure, evaluate suspicious URL characteristics, and identify behaviors associated with credential theft or malicious scripts.

If Netcraft has classified a destination as dangerous, the extension can warn you or prevent navigation. A reporting function lets you submit a suspicious URL. Netcraft says reports are analyzed and, when confirmed as malicious, added to feeds that can protect other users.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Its coverage is broader than ordinary phishing-page detection. Netcraft documents protections involving:
- Phishing pages that imitate legitimate services.
- Fake shopping sites designed to take payment or personal information.
- JavaScript skimmers on shopping pages.
- Credential-leak behavior.
- Cryptominers and other malicious scripts.
The practical benefit is an additional decision point before you enter credentials, payment details, or other sensitive information. The warning is most valuable when a site is new, impersonates a familiar brand, or has not yet been widely identified by other security tools.
How detection works during browsing
Known-site intelligence and reputation feeds
Netcraft maintains feeds of sites associated with phishing and other cybercrime. The extension consults that intelligence as you browse and can block or warn on destinations already classified as malicious. Because malicious domains can appear and disappear quickly, the feed is continuously updated rather than being a fixed list installed once with the extension.

Some checks occur locally in the browser. Netcraft describes inspection of suspicious URL characteristics and other page signals, while its privacy policy says full URLs are generally checked on the device. This allows the extension to evaluate a page without routinely sending every complete URL to Netcraft.

- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Credential-leak detection
The extension can inspect whether sensitive information entered on a page is being sent to a different domain. If that cross-domain transmission looks like credential theft, Netcraft says the suspected leak can be blocked and the page reported. This is different from merely checking the spelling of a domain: it examines what the page attempts to do with data you submit.
Malicious-script and skimmer checks
Shopping pages can be compromised with JavaScript that captures card details or checkout information. Netcraft describes blocking suspected skimming requests and reporting the page. Similar protections cover web miners and other malicious scripts. These controls operate alongside reputation checks, so a site that is not yet on a known-deny list may still trigger a behavior-based warning.
What the Heartbleed indicator means
Heartbleed was a vulnerability in the OpenSSL cryptographic library. Netcraft’s help documentation says that, at disclosure, it affected about 17% of SSL web servers using certificates issued by trusted certificate authorities. That is a historical disclosure-era estimate, not a current measurement of vulnerable websites.

How to read the Site Report result
- Bleeding-heart icon: Netcraft considers the site unsafe in the context of its Heartbleed assessment.
- Warning triangle: The report can indicate Heartbleed exposure or a lack of Perfect Forward Secrecy.
- Certificate reissued: Reissuance reduces the risk that a compromised private key remains in use, but it is not an absolute guarantee.
If a site was exposed and did not reissue its certificate, Netcraft treats it as unsafe because the private key may have been compromised. Reissuing a certificate addresses the certificate-key concern, but an old certificate can still be usable unless it was revoked. The report therefore provides historical context rather than a promise that a site is secure in every respect.
How to inspect a site
- Open the site in a supported browser with the extension installed.
- Open the Netcraft extension panel from the browser toolbar.
- Choose the Site Report option to view the site’s security and infrastructure information.
- Look for the Heartbleed icon, warning triangle, certificate history, and Perfect Forward Secrecy information.
- If the page appears suspicious, do not submit credentials or payment data; use the reporting control to send the URL to Netcraft.
Privacy: what is sent and what stays local
Netcraft’s privacy policy distinguishes between hostnames and full URLs. Hostnames from extension users are collected for malicious-URL identification and aggregate popularity datasets. Full URLs are generally checked locally on the device.
Some events can be transmitted when protection is triggered:
- For a blocked site, Netcraft may receive the blocked URL, the reason for blocking, the extension version, country, and device details. Netcraft says this supports feed quality and false-positive analysis.
- If malicious JavaScript or a credential leak is detected, the site URL may also be collected.
- Analytics can be disabled through the extension’s Allow analytics setting.
Privacy controls have a direct security trade-off. Netcraft says that disabling blocking for skimmers, web miners, other malicious scripts, or credential leaks also removes those protections. Turning off analytics is therefore different from turning off a protection category: the first limits telemetry, while the second reduces detection and blocking coverage.

Supported browsers and distribution
Netcraft lists support for four desktop browser families:
| Browser | Availability | Distribution |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome | Supported | Browser extension store |
| Firefox | Supported | Browser add-on store |
| Edge | Supported | Browser extension store |
| Opera | Supported | Browser extension store |
The Chrome Web Store listing identifies the add-on as a privacy-and-security tool. The listing showed version 2.1.2 and approximately 70,000 users when it was crawled; store version and user counts can change as the listing is updated.
The extension is software-only and free. It is delivered through browser stores rather than as a physical product, and no hardware companion is required for the browser protections described here.
Installing and configuring it safely
Install from the browser’s official store
- Open your browser’s official extension or add-on store.
- Search for the Netcraft Extension and verify that the publisher information matches Netcraft.
- Select the install or add-to-browser control.
- After installation, pin the extension to the toolbar if you want quick access to Site Report and reporting controls.
Store listings can change, so check the displayed version and permissions before confirming an installation. Installing from an unofficial download bypasses the distribution channel Netcraft identifies for the extension.

Review the privacy settings
- Open the extension’s settings from the browser’s extensions manager or the extension panel.
- Review the Allow analytics control.
- Decide whether to keep blocking enabled for skimmers, web miners, other malicious scripts, and credential leaks.
- Remember that disabling one of those protection categories removes that category’s blocking behavior.
Use warnings as stop signals
A block or warning should be treated as a reason to stop, not as a challenge to bypass. Close the page, check the address through a separately trusted route, and report a suspected false positive or malicious URL when appropriate. If you already entered a password on a page that triggered a credential-leak warning, change that password from the legitimate service’s known address and review other sessions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Netcraft can and cannot tell you
What it can provide
- A reputation-based warning or block for destinations Netcraft has classified as malicious.
- Additional checks for fake shops, skimmers, credential leaks, cryptominers, and malicious scripts.
- A Site Report with historical Heartbleed, certificate-reissuance, and Perfect Forward Secrecy context.
- A reporting channel that can feed confirmed threats into future protection updates.
- Browser coverage across Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera.
What it does not establish
- It does not prove that a site is safe merely because no warning appears.
- A reissued certificate does not prove that an old certificate was revoked or that the site has no other security problems.
- The historical 17% Heartbleed figure is not a current vulnerability rate.
- Netcraft’s cited materials do not publish a current extension accuracy percentage or phishing-block rate.
- Disabling script, skimmer, miner, or credential-leak blocking removes those protections.
How to evaluate it against another browser security tool
If you are deciding whether Netcraft fits your browsing habits, compare tools using the same questions rather than relying on a single “phishing protection” label.
| Comparison question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What threats are covered? | Determine whether protection stops at phishing or also includes fake shops, skimmers, credential leaks, cryptominers, and suspicious scripts. |
| How are threats detected? | Separate known-feed blocking from URL-risk heuristics, page behavior checks, and community reporting. |
| What data leaves the browser? | Check treatment of hostnames, blocked URLs, malicious-script URLs, analytics, country, device details, and extension version. |
| What happens when privacy controls are changed? | Find out whether an opt-out only limits analytics or also disables a protection category. |
| Is Heartbleed history visible? | Some tools may not expose TLS-heartbeat history, certificate reissuance, or Perfect Forward Secrecy context. |
| Which browsers and stores are supported? | Coverage matters if you move between Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera. |
Common problems and practical responses
A page is blocked but you believe it is legitimate
Do not immediately disable all protection. Check the address independently, compare it with the service’s established domain, and submit a report if you believe the classification is wrong. Netcraft says blocked-site data can be used for false-positive analysis, so reporting supplies useful context.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You want less telemetry
Review the Allow analytics setting. Understand that this control is separate from the protection switches for skimmers, miners, malicious scripts, and credential leaks.
You are relying on the Heartbleed icon for a complete security verdict
Use the icon as historical TLS evidence, not as a full website audit. Consider the certificate-reissuance result, the Perfect Forward Secrecy indication, the site’s address, and what information you plan to enter.
The extension does not cover your browser
Netcraft’s listed support is Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera. If you use a different browser, the documented extension coverage does not establish support for it.
Bottom line for readers
Netcraft Extension is a free, browser-store add-on that combines malicious-site feeds, local and network-assisted checks, reporting, and a distinctive Heartbleed-focused Site Report. Its strongest practical use is interrupting risky browsing before credentials or payment data are submitted, especially on phishing pages, fake shops, and compromised shopping sites. The privacy model is transparent about collecting hostnames and certain blocked or malicious-event details, while generally checking full URLs locally; users can disable analytics, but turning off specific script and credential protections removes those safeguards. Treat its warnings and Heartbleed indicators as informed signals, not as proof that an unflagged site is harmless.
