NetEase confirmed in February 2025 that it reduced a Seattle-based design team supporting Marvel Rivals. The company described the change as an organizational decision intended to optimize development efficiency; it did not announce that the entire game team was laid off or that the game was canceled.
Which Marvel Rivals developers were affected?
The confirmed report concerned a design team based in Seattle, part of a larger global design function supporting Marvel Rivals. PC Gamer reported on February 18, 2025, that NetEase confirmed the reduction and did not disclose how many employees were affected. It also reported that there were no longer Seattle-based developers working on the game. PC Gamer’s report attributed to game director Thaddeus Sasser a public post saying his team had been laid off.
That describes a Seattle team reduction, not a confirmed layoff of every developer working on Marvel Rivals. The reporting does not establish a precise number of workers affected.
Why did NetEase make the change?
NetEase’s representative told GameSpot that the company had made the decision “for organizational reasons and to optimize development efficiency for the game.” The statement characterized the change as “a reduction of a design team based in Seattle that is part of a larger global design function in support of Marvel Rivals.” Those are the company’s stated reasons, not an independently established account of the decision’s effects. GameSpot published the statement on February 19, 2025.

What did NetEase say about the rest of the team?
NetEase said the game’s core development team continued in Guangzhou, China, led by Lead Producer Weicong Wu and Game Creative Director Guangyun Chen. The company said that team remained committed to delivering the game. This is NetEase’s assurance about its development organization; it does not, by itself, establish what effect the Seattle reduction had on staffing, production, or future updates.

Official updates continued after the February 2025 report. The official Season 10.5 patch notes, published October 6, 2026, scheduled the update to begin October 9, 2026, at 09:00 UTC. This is evidence of ongoing official game updates at that date, not proof that the 2025 staff change had no internal development impact.

NetEase and Marvel Games had announced Marvel Rivals as a joint project in March 2024, describing it as a team-based PvP shooter with continuing post-launch updates. Their announcement provides that original framing; the later patch notes document an update well after launch.
