Netflix shut down Team Blue, its Southern California game studio, in October 2024, and its planned AAA multiplatform game never reached release. Netflix confirmed the studio’s closure to Game File; the project’s title, detailed design and the reason for the shutdown were not publicly established in the cited reporting.
What happened to Netflix’s Team Blue studio?
Team Blue was Netflix’s internal Southern California studio, created to pursue a more ambitious game-development effort than the company’s earlier mobile-centered activity. On October 22, 2024, Game File reported that Netflix had shut it down, and a company representative confirmed the closure. Engadget and PC Gamer also reported Netflix’s confirmation.

Coverage characterized Team Blue’s goal as a big-budget, multi-device strategy. That description reflects reporting about the studio’s direction, not a publicly detailed Netflix product plan. The practical outcome is clear: the studio closed before its original-IP project was released.
What was the AAA game Team Blue was developing?
When Joseph Staten joined Netflix in spring 2023, he said he was joining “to work as creative director for a brand-new AAA multiplatform game and original IP,” as quoted by Game File. That statement establishes the project’s broad ambition and format, but not what the finished game would have been.

The cited coverage does not establish a final title, detailed gameplay, or a development budget. Because the game was not released, there is no finished product to compare or evaluate.
Who worked at Team Blue?

When did Netflix close Team Blue?
- Late 2022: Chacko Sonny joined Netflix to build or lead the Southern California studio.

Why did Netflix shut down Team Blue?
The cited reports do not give a definitive reason. PC Gamer reported that Netflix provided no explanation, and the other coverage does not establish a confirmed strategic motive. It is therefore not possible to say from these reports whether the decision reflected a change in priorities, project concerns or another cause.
Team Blue’s reported AAA, multiplatform ambition contrasted with Netflix’s earlier mobile-centered games effort, but that context does not explain the closure. The available reporting supports the shutdown and the cancellation or non-release of the project—not a specific account of why Netflix made the decision.
