Nether wart grows on soul sand. It does not use soul soil, and ordinary soil (such as dirt) is not an established substitute. If a Nether-wart farm is failing, the first check is the block directly beneath the wart: it must be soul sand.
The similar names cause most of the confusion. Soul sand and soul soil are separate blocks with different documented behavior. Minecraft’s official description identifies soul sand as the only block on which Nether wart grows, while its Soul Sand Valley guide describes soul soil as barren except for occasional crimson roots.

The short answer: choose soul sand
For a Nether-wart farm, place the wart on soul sand. That is the supported growing block in the official Minecraft description. The block’s role is not interchangeable with soul soil merely because both contain the word “soul.”

The practical choice is therefore unambiguous: use soul sand beneath the Nether wart.

Soul sand, soul soil and ordinary soil compared
| Block | Documented behavior relevant to Nether wart | Use for a Nether-wart farm |
|---|---|---|
| Soul sand | Minecraft identifies it as the only block on which Nether wart grows. | Use this block. |
| Soul soil | The official Soul Sand Valley description calls it barren, apart from occasional crimson roots. | Do not use it as the planting block. |
| Ordinary soil or dirt | The cited official descriptions do not identify it as a Nether-wart growing block. | Use soul sand instead. |
The distinction is functional, not cosmetic. A block can look related, appear in the same Nether environment, or share a name without accepting the same plant. Check the block’s exact name before diagnosing the farm.
What Minecraft’s official sources say
Minecraft’s Block of the Week: Soul Sand, credited to Marsh Davies and published November 24, 2016, states: “It’s also the only block on which Nether wart grows – a vital ingredient in many potions.” Read the article at Minecraft’s Block of the Week: Soul Sand.
That sentence answers the block question directly: the supported substrate is soul sand, and the article describes Nether wart as important for potion-making.

- Explore randomly-generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armour to fend off the dangerous mobs
Taken together, the two descriptions explain why replacing one block with the other fails. Soul sand is named as the Nether-wart growing block; soul soil is characterized as barren, with crimson roots as the stated exception.
How to set up the planting block
The setup is simple because the important decision is the substrate. Use this sequence when starting a patch or correcting an existing one:
- Inspect the block name. Select or examine the block where you intend to plant. Confirm that it is labeled soul sand, not soul soil. If you are using ordinary dirt, replace it.
- Prepare the planting area with soul sand. Lay out the section of the farm using soul sand wherever Nether wart will be planted. The wart-growing rule applies to the block beneath the plant, so the surface material matters.
- Place Nether wart on the soul sand. Plant the wart directly on the prepared soul-sand surface. A nearby soul-soil block does not make up for a wrong block underneath an individual plant.
- Check each problem spot individually. In a mixed-material build, inspect every square that is not behaving as expected. Replace any soul soil or ordinary soil under those plants with soul sand.
- Keep the labels separate while building. If you store both blocks or use them in decorative patterns, place them in separate sections so a later repair does not accidentally substitute soul soil for soul sand.
These steps address the supported requirement without assuming additional environmental rules. The official descriptions cited for this question establish the growing block; they do not provide a complete list of every other factor that might affect a particular farm design.
Troubleshooting when Nether wart is not growing
1. The block is soul soil
This is the most likely naming mistake. Soul soil is a separate block, and the official Soul Sand Valley article describes it as barren. Break the block beneath the wart and replace it with soul sand, then check the plant again.
Rank #3
2. The block is ordinary dirt or another soil-like surface
“Soil” in a casual question may mean dirt rather than soul soil. Neither interpretation changes the practical fix: the documented Nether-wart substrate is soul sand. Do not treat a brown or earth-like appearance as proof that a block is suitable.
3. Only some plants are affected
A patch can contain more than one block type, especially when a decorative floor surrounds the farm. Inspect the squares individually rather than assuming the entire room has the same foundation. One incorrect block can explain why one planting position differs from its neighbors.
4. You are checking an edition- or version-specific edge case
The official articles used here state the general rule but do not compare behavior across every current Java Edition and Bedrock Edition version. If your game appears to behave differently after you have verified the block name, consult documentation for the exact edition and version you are playing. Do not generalize an observation from one version to every version without that check.

Why soul sand and soul soil are easy to confuse
The two names are nearly identical, and both are associated with the Nether. That makes a quick inventory selection or a hurried building session especially prone to mistakes. The words are not two names for one material: they identify distinct blocks.

The official descriptions also emphasize different roles. Soul sand is discussed as the block that supports Nether wart, while soul soil is presented as a barren surface in the Soul Sand Valley, with occasional crimson roots noted as an exception. A player who remembers only “soul blocks can grow Nether plants” may therefore choose the wrong one.
Color, location, or a decorative theme is not a reliable substitute for the item name. Read the exact block label in your inventory or interface before planting, particularly when soul sand and soul soil are stored together.

For a small personal supply
Use a clearly marked strip of soul sand and keep the rest of the room’s flooring visually or physically separate. This minimizes accidental replacement when expanding the patch or harvesting. Since the relevant rule concerns the block under the wart, a compact, dedicated strip is easier to audit than a large decorative floor.

For a decorative Nether base
Decoration can surround the growing area, but the planting squares themselves should remain identifiable as soul sand. If the floor design uses both soul sand and soul soil, add a border or pattern that makes the functional squares obvious during repairs.
What this answer does—and does not—establish
The supported conclusion is narrow and reliable: soul sand is the documented block for Nether wart, and soul soil is described as barren except for occasional crimson roots. The cited articles were published in 2016 and 2020, respectively. They explain the general block behavior, not a version-by-version matrix for every current edition.
That means the block check is the right first diagnostic, while unusual behavior after that check should be investigated against the documentation for the exact edition and version. It would be unsafe to claim an edition-specific exception from these articles alone.

Quick checklist
- Read the block’s exact name: soul sand.
- Do not substitute soul soil; its official description calls it barren except for occasional crimson roots.
- Do not treat ordinary dirt as an established alternative.
- Inspect the block directly beneath each problem plant.
- If the verified soul-sand setup still behaves unexpectedly, check documentation for your specific edition and version.
