The error messages you may see
The program can't start because mkl_intel_thread.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
The code execution cannot proceed because mkl_intel_thread.dll was not found.
INTEL MKL ERROR: The specified module could not be found. mkl_intel_thread.dll.
Intel MKL FATAL ERROR: Cannot load mkl_intel_thread.dll.
You may also see:

The procedure entry point ... could not be located ...
These messages concern mkl_intel_thread.dll, a genuine Intel Math Kernel Library, or MKL, threading component. The safest repair is to identify the application that needs it and repair or reinstall that application so its complete, matching runtime is restored.
The 60-second answer
mkl_intel_thread.dll is the OpenMP dynamic threading layer used by Intel MKL, now distributed as Intel oneMKL. Scientific software, Python and NumPy environments, developer-built Fortran/C/C++ programs, audio applications, and some games may bundle or depend on it.

It is not a Windows system DLL and it is not normally supplied by the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Do not download a standalone copy and place it in System32. The correct file must match the application, MKL release, dependencies, and processor architecture.
Start here:
- Note the exact program that displays the error.
- Use that program’s launcher or installer to choose Repair, Verify files, or Verify integrity.
- If it is a Conda or Anaconda program, activate the environment that owns it.
- If it is an Intel oneAPI project, install and expose the matching oneMKL runtime.
- If the file exists but still will not load, investigate dependencies, architecture, and version conflicts.
What owns this DLL
The publisher of the application may not be Intel. Intel supplies the MKL component, but another program may include it in a private runtime directory.

Common owners include:
- A Conda or Anaconda environment containing NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Jupyter, or related packages
- A scientific or engineering application
- An Intel Fortran, C, or C++ application
- An audio application that bundles numerical libraries
- A game or packaged application containing Python or NumPy components
- A developer deployment created with tools such as PyInstaller, cx_Freeze, or py2exe
- An Intel oneAPI installation used by a developer
Look at the title bar, launcher, shortcut, or event that produced the error. If a game displays it, repair the game. If Python displays it, repair the active environment. Installing a global copy of the DLL does not identify or repair the actual owner.
A copy may normally be beside the application executable, inside a private runtime folder, inside a Conda environment, or under an Intel oneAPI installation. There is no single universal version or file size. Newer packages can also use versioned names such as mkl_intel_thread.2.dll, so do not substitute a differently named file.
What each error means
| Message | Most likely meaning | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| DLL is missing or was not found | The application’s runtime file is absent, quarantined, or outside the expected directory | Repair the owning application |
| Intel MKL cannot load the DLL | The file or one of its dependencies cannot be loaded | Restore the complete MKL/OpenMP runtime |
| Specified module could not be found | The named DLL may exist, but another dependency may be missing | Check the matched dependency set |
| Ordinal could not be located | The DLL has an incompatible export table or release | Reinstall the application’s complete runtime |
| Procedure entry point could not be located | A program loaded the wrong version of a library | Remove the version conflict by repairing the owning package |
A missing file and an un-loadable file are not the same problem. Intel MKL applications may also require mkl_core.dll, an interface DLL, and Intel OpenMP libiomp5md.dll. Restoring only mkl_intel_thread.dll may leave the application unable to start.
Fix 1: Repair the application that shows the error
This is the correct first fix for most ordinary applications and games.
Use a repair option
- Close the affected program.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if it is available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is not available, open the application’s official launcher or installer. Look for Repair, Verify, Verify files, or Verify integrity of game files. Let that process replace the application’s complete runtime rather than selecting an individual DLL.
If the program starts, use it normally and avoid copying additional DLLs into its directory.
Reinstall from the official vendor
If repair fails:
- Back up the application’s settings or projects if necessary.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from the application’s official vendor or use its official launcher.
- Install it to the intended location.
- Start the program once before restoring custom plug-ins or modifications.
A clean reinstall is especially important when the error appeared after manually replacing DLLs, moving the application folder, or installing an add-on. If a game broke after another program was installed, a conflicting global MKL or OpenMP DLL may be taking precedence over the game’s private copy.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed or quarantined a runtime file.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries associated with the affected application or its installation directory.
- Do not restore an unknown DLL merely because its filename matches.
- If the file came from the application’s official installer and the vendor supports restoration, follow the security product’s restore process.
- Rescan the official installer.
- Run the application’s repair or file-verification function again.
Do not disable security protection to run a DLL from an unverified source. A manually copied library can create both version conflicts and DLL hijacking risks.
Fix 3: Repair a Conda or Anaconda environment
Conda applications often fail when the correct environment is not active or when incompatible MKL/OpenMP files are being found elsewhere.
Open Anaconda Prompt or a Command Prompt where Conda is available, then activate the environment:
conda activate ENVIRONMENT_NAME
Replace ENVIRONMENT_NAME with the environment used by the affected program.
Launch the program from that same prompt. For example, start Python or Jupyter there rather than using a desktop shortcut. If it works from the activated prompt but not from a shortcut, the shortcut is probably launching outside the environment.
If the environment is active but the error remains, test Conda’s Windows DLL search workaround:
set CONDA_DLL_SEARCH_MODIFICATION_ENABLE=1
Then launch the affected program from that prompt again. This setting applies to that Command Prompt session.
Repair the package through Conda rather than downloading a replacement DLL. Reinstall the affected package or its MKL/OpenMP dependencies using the package manager that created the environment. Do not delete or rename files in C:WindowsSystem32 casually. A system-wide file may be used by other software, and removing it can create additional failures.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If a fresh environment works, the original environment is damaged or contains conflicting packages. Recreate it from the project’s documented package requirements instead of copying DLLs between environments.
Fix 4: Repair an Intel oneAPI or developer installation
If you built the application or use software installed with Intel oneAPI, the runtime may be installed but not visible to the executable.
- Install the matching Intel oneAPI or oneMKL package using Intel’s official installation method.
- Match the runtime architecture to the application.
- Use Intel’s supplied environment setup script before launching the program, where one is provided.
- Alternatively, configure the project’s debug or runtime environment with the correct MKL and OpenMP DLL directories.
- For deployment, ship the complete compatible runtime set with the application or use an official Intel runtime package.
A library directory not present in the process environment can produce a missing-DLL message even when the file is present on disk. Do not add random folders to the global PATH. Use the project’s documented environment setup or the application’s private runtime directory.
For a 64-bit program, use the 64-bit runtime. For a 32-bit program, use the 32-bit runtime. The two cannot be interchanged.

Check these possibilities:
- The executable is 32-bit but the DLL is 64-bit
- The executable is 64-bit but the DLL is 32-bit
mkl_intel_thread.dllcame from a different MKL releaselibiomp5md.dllor another MKL dependency is missing- Another application placed an incompatible library in a searched directory
- A packaged Python application omitted dependent DLLs during deployment
The error may change from “missing” to “ordinal” or “entry point” when the wrong version is present. That is evidence of an incompatible runtime, not a request for a different random DLL.
Use the application installer to restore the entire set. Developers can inspect the executable’s dependency chain with an appropriate development diagnostic tool, then correct the deployment package. End users should normally send that finding to the application vendor rather than mixing individual Intel files.
Windows searches several locations when loading a DLL, including application and system locations. A private application copy can therefore be affected by an incorrectly placed global DLL.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when the application also has graphics or hardware symptoms
A driver update is not the normal fix for a missing MKL threading DLL. Consider it only when the same application also crashes with graphics, audio, accelerator, or hardware errors.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or System devices.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Prefer the hardware manufacturer’s official driver when Windows cannot find an appropriate update. Do not replace MKL files as part of a driver procedure.
Manually hunting through hardware models and driver versions can be tedious when several devices are involved. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan that shows which drivers are outdated; the full version performs the driver installation. It is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the DLL.
Fix 7: Check Windows components, but do not expect SFC to recreate MKL
System File Checker and DISM repair Windows components. They generally do not restore a third-party Intel MKL DLL, so use them when multiple programs show broader Windows corruption symptoms, not as the primary fix for one application.

Repeatedly hunting through Windows repair commands without knowing whether the problem is a damaged Windows component or an application runtime can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that identifies reported system issues; the full version performs the repair. It is optional, and it cannot replace the owning application’s installer when that installer must restore MKL.
Why regsvr32 normally does nothing
Do not register mkl_intel_thread.dll with regsvr32.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsregsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points. MKL runtime libraries are normally numerical and threading components, not COM controls. A registration error is therefore expected and does not repair the missing dependency.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor explicitly identifies a particular COM DLL and gives registration instructions.
Do not use a random DLL download
A standalone download can be:
- The wrong MKL release
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Missing its companion libraries
- Modified or malicious
- Incompatible with the application’s export table
It may also place a library where another program can load it unintentionally. Use the affected vendor’s installer, the official game launcher, Conda’s package manager, or Intel’s official oneMKL runtime and development packages.
If the DLL exists but the error continues
Work through this checklist:
- Confirm the application executable and the DLL use the same architecture.
- Check whether
libiomp5md.dlland other companion MKL files are present. - Remove manually copied DLLs from the application directory if they do not belong to that installation.
- Repair the complete application package.
- For Conda, activate the correct environment and launch from that prompt.
- Check antivirus quarantine.
- Look for an ordinal or entry-point message indicating a version conflict.
- Reinstall the application rather than mixing files from another program.
- Use SFC and DISM only if other Windows components also appear damaged.
- Contact the application vendor with the exact error text, application version, architecture, and installation path.
System Restore is a last resort for a broader system change when the application cannot be repaired and a suitable restore point exists. It is not the first-line method for restoring a bundled MKL runtime.
FAQ
