Called Awakening, the experience let players select and manipulate virtual objects, stop lasers, and fight robots without handheld controllers. It used an HTC Vive fitted with a seven-electrode EEG strap and software designed to detect visual attention and intention.
That is brain-computer-interface control in a narrow, practical sense—not unrestricted mind reading.

What Neurable unveiled at SIGGRAPH 2017
Neurable, a Boston-based brain-computer-interface startup, showed Awakening at SIGGRAPH 2017 in Los Angeles. The game was developed with estudiofuture, a Madrid-based VR graphics company.
Its story cast the player as a child imprisoned in a government laboratory who discovers telekinetic abilities. In the demonstration, players could use those abilities to interact with the environment, solve clues, escape laboratory rooms, stop lasers, grab and throw objects, and battle robotic guards. One reported interaction involved turning a robot dog into a balloon animal.

Contemporary coverage called it the “world’s first brain-controlled VR game.” That phrase should be attributed to Neurable and the coverage rather than treated as independently proven historical fact. Earlier EEG games and virtual-reality experiments existed; the narrower novelty claim concerned a public immersive VR game using Neurable’s intention-detection system. IEEE Spectrum’s contemporaneous report is the strongest account of the demonstration.
How the brain control worked
The player wore an HTC Vive with its standard rear strap replaced by Neurable’s upgraded strap. The prototype contained seven dry EEG electrodes, described as off-the-shelf components from Wearable Sensing.
- The game presented objects or targets in the player’s view.
- Objects were highlighted or animated in sequence, helping the system associate a neural response with a particular target.
- The player looked at the desired object and intended to interact with it.
- The electrodes recorded electrical activity from the scalp.
- Neurable’s machine-learning software classified the relevant response.
- The game converted that classification into an action such as selecting, grabbing, stopping, or throwing.
Neurable said it focused on event-related potentials: measurable brain responses associated with reactions to particular stimuli. That differed from the broad “focus,” “relaxation,” or “concentration” signals often associated with consumer EEG products.
The important limitation is that the system classified constrained choices. It did not decode private memories, inner speech, beliefs, or arbitrary thoughts. A fair description is: Awakening translated EEG responses to visual choices and intended actions into game commands.
Controller-free did not mean eyes-free
The interaction depended heavily on visual attention. Players needed to see and attend to possible targets, so “controller-free” or “hands-free” is more accurate than “independent of sight.” A secondary report described the setup as involving EEG sensors and eye tracking, but the strongest technical account centers on EEG-based intention detection and visual stimulus selection.

The game’s design was therefore part of the technology. Neurable was not simply attaching an EEG headset to any existing VR game and allowing arbitrary commands. The experience controlled when targets appeared, limited the available choices, and structured actions so that the classifier had a manageable problem.
Why this differed from many older BCI demos
Many earlier consumer EEG demonstrations focused on meditation, relaxation, attention, or motor imagery. Motor-imagery systems ask users to imagine moving a limb or performing an action, often requiring substantial training.

Neurable’s approach attempted to use a more natural sequence: look at an object, decide to act, and let the system infer the intended selection. Neurable presented this as requiring little or no lengthy motor-imagery training. That was a usability claim about the design—not proof that every user would achieve the same performance.
The approach offered a potentially useful extra input channel for VR. It could let a player confirm a selection without reaching for a controller, particularly when visual targeting is already central to the experience. It was not necessarily faster or more reliable than pressing a physical button for frequent actions.
The hardware was still a prototype
The seven electrodes had to be positioned in scientifically useful locations. Neurable’s software could not automatically make an arbitrary EEG headset equivalent to the demonstrated Vive strap.

The strap was also bulky. Real-world performance could be affected by electrode contact, hair, headset movement, eye and muscle artifacts, fatigue, distraction, inconsistent attention, and differences between users. Calibration or user-specific model adaptation may also be necessary in practical deployments.
The available 2017 reporting does not provide a peer-reviewed performance benchmark for Awakening. It does not establish the game’s accuracy, latency, false-positive rate, sample size, or failure rate. Those numbers should not be inferred from the successful demonstrations.
Was Awakening commercially available?
Not as a normal home-VR game, based on the available evidence.
Neurable’s CEO described the SIGGRAPH version as a shortened version of an arcade-oriented experience. The company discussed placing the technology and game in VR arcades in 2018 and providing straps to arcades and developers. The reporting confirms the plan, but not a final release date, consumer price, operating-arcade list, or broad shipment.
That distinction matters:
- Confirmed: a public SIGGRAPH demonstration and prototype preview.
- Announced target: VR-arcade and developer deployment around 2018.
- Not established by the reporting: a retail HTC Vive release or a currently playable commercial version of Awakening.
Readers should not assume that buying an EEG headset today provides access to the original game.

What became of Neurable’s technology?
Neurable’s public commercial direction has since moved beyond the 2017 Vive-mounted prototype. As of August 2026, the company emphasizes EEG-enabled headphones, cognitive metrics, developer integrations, and OEM partnerships.
Its MW75 Neuro is a headphone product with embedded EEG sensing and a companion app. The company’s store listed it at $699 when checked on August 18, 2026; prices and availability can change. A separate MW75 Neuro Research Kit was listed at $2,199.
Neurable also offers a request-based developer-kit route and an OEM partner program for integrating EEG into headworn devices and software. These are current development and product-integration paths, not evidence that the original Awakening hardware or software remains on sale.

VR has always needed convenient ways to select, confirm, and manipulate objects. Hand controllers can be cumbersome, hand tracking can be occluded, and voice commands are not always suitable in public or noisy spaces. A BCI could add another channel for selection or confirmation.

That does not make it a universal controller replacement. Physical controls remain valuable for fast actions, precise analog movement, text entry, accessibility configurations, and situations where attention or EEG signal quality is inconsistent. For an arcade, the practical obstacles would also include fitting, hygiene, electrode contact, calibration, hair compatibility, cleaning, staff training, and the effect of setup time on player throughput.

The lasting importance of Awakening was therefore less “VR has become mind controlled” and more “VR can be designed around a constrained neural input.” It showed how visual attention, game timing, and EEG classification could work together in an immersive interface.
Current alternatives for experimentation
None of these products is a confirmed way to play Awakening.
- Neurable MW75 Neuro: best for exploring Neurable’s current consumer brain-sensing direction.
- Neurable Developer Kit or OEM program: aimed at product teams building integrations; access is request-based.
- OpenBCI Ultracortex: suited to technical users who want an open, research-oriented EEG platform.
- Muse developer platform: useful for prototyping, education, research, and installations, subject to its licensing terms.
- EMOTIV EPOC X: a wireless multi-channel EEG headset for development and research, with software and data-access costs to evaluate separately.
The verdict
Neurable’s headline was based on a real demonstration. At SIGGRAPH 2017, Awakening showed players using EEG responses to select and manipulate VR objects without handheld controllers. But it was a carefully constrained prototype with specialized hardware, not a general mind-reading system and not a verified mainstream game release.
