New game IP vs. established franchises: what players gain and risk

New game IP gives players a world with fewer inherited rules; an established franchise gives them a recognizable starting point. The trade-off is not simply originality versus familiarity. A new IP must earn attention and trust from zero, while a franchise entry must satisfy expectations without becoming repetitive. Neither route guarantees quality, sales, or player satisfaction. The decisive questions are what the particular game promises, how well it delivers, and how much creative room its team has.

For players, the practical lesson is to treat recognition as useful information rather than proof, and novelty as a possibility rather than a guarantee. Evaluate the game’s mechanics, tone, support plans, and execution separately from the age of its brand.

New game IP vs. established franchises: the basic trade-off

In games, “IP” can mean intellectual property in the legal sense—copyrights, trademarks, characters, worlds, and related rights—but industry conversation often uses it to mean a recognizable franchise. A new game IP introduces a setting, cast, rules, or premise that players have not previously encountered in that form. An established franchise extends a known property through a sequel, remake, spin-off, reboot, or another licensed entry.

The player-facing difference is an exchange between discovery cost and expectation load. A new title has to explain why its world and mechanics deserve attention. A franchise title can communicate its appeal quickly, but its audience arrives with a mental checklist: familiar characters, a recognizable tone, signature systems, and a standard of continuity. A game can benefit from either position, and it can also fail because of either one.

Question New IP Established franchise
How does a player understand the appeal? The premise, art, mechanics, and demonstrations must make the value clear without prior knowledge. The name, characters, or established systems provide an immediate reference point, but the new game must explain what is different.
How much creative room is available? The team can define genre, tone, structure, and world rules with fewer continuity obligations, subject to its contracts and publisher arrangements. The team inherits a foundation and can iterate on it, but changes may conflict with what fans consider essential.
What audience exists at launch? Awareness and trust must be built from the ground up. An existing community may be easier to reach, although its size and willingness to buy cannot be assumed.
What can go wrong for players? The concept may be difficult to understand, poorly differentiated, or unable to sustain interest. The game may feel over-familiar, mishandle beloved elements, or add changes that do not serve the experience.
What happens after success? A successful world can support sequels or other adaptations, but future rights depend on the actual agreements. The property already has continuity and commercial infrastructure, while repeated use can contribute to fatigue.

What players gain from a new game IP

A distinct world and cast

Original IP can introduce characters, conflicts, settings, and visual identities that are not constrained by an existing canon. That makes room for a premise that would be difficult to fit into a long-running series. Players can encounter a different emotional register, a new kind of protagonist, or a world whose rules are designed around the game’s own needs rather than inherited from earlier releases.

This distinction matters even when the underlying genre is familiar. A new action game may still use exploration and progression, but its world can change what those systems mean. A new role-playing game can establish its own moral assumptions instead of asking players to remember decades of fictional history. The benefit is not that every original idea is automatically better; it is that the game has the freedom to make its identity coherent from the start.

Permission to take structural risks

Without a requirement to preserve a franchise’s central characters or timeline, a team may be able to change viewpoint, pacing, control schemes, or the balance between story and systems. That can produce a more focused game, or a bold experiment that would be difficult to justify as the next numbered entry in a conservative series.

Hermen Hulst, then head of PlayStation Studios, called new IP “the lifeblood of gaming” in a June 2, 2021 interview. The phrase is an argument for creative renewal, not evidence that original games are commercially safer. New projects still require substantial upfront investment, and the market cannot reliably predict which concepts will become popular.

Potential for a lasting new world

If players respond to a new setting, its creator may be able to develop it across later games or other media. That possibility gives an original release a sense of discovery: the first game can establish a mythology rather than merely add another chapter to one. It also creates a reason for players to support a team whose identity is not tied to an existing property.

Ownership should not be assumed. A developer can create an original game while a publisher, investor, or another company controls some or all of the rights. WIPO’s discussion of original IP points to potential artistic benefits and stronger bargaining power for developers, but the practical result depends on contracts and corporate arrangements.

What players risk with a new game IP

The discovery problem

A recognizable franchise can explain its broad appeal in a title or trailer. A new IP has to communicate the premise, genre, tone, and reasons to care without that shortcut. Marketing may emphasize an attractive concept that the finished game does not sustain, or it may fail to explain a genuinely unusual design. Players therefore face more uncertainty before release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That uncertainty is not only about quality. A new game may be excellent but aimed at a narrower audience than its advertising suggests. Its systems may reward patience when trailers imply constant action, or its story may assume an interest in a setting that was never clearly described. Reviews, demos, transparent gameplay footage, and clear information about the core loop can reduce this information gap, but they cannot eliminate it.

Unproven long-term support

Players cannot use an established series’ history to estimate how a new IP will handle updates, expansions, accessibility, or technical problems. The team may have a strong plan, but the first release has to establish whether that plan is realistic. This is especially important for games designed around continuing communities: the promise of a world is different from proof that it will be supported well.

Identity without a guarantee

Originality can produce a memorable experience, but it can also produce a collection of ideas that do not work together. A new setting does not compensate for weak controls, unclear progression, or an unfinished narrative. The absence of franchise obligations creates room for experimentation; it does not ensure that the experiment succeeds.

What players gain from an established franchise

A legible starting point

Familiar characters, visual language, or mechanics lower the effort required to understand what a game is trying to be. Returning players may know whether they enjoy the series’ combat, humor, competitive structure, or storytelling style before they see every detail of the new release. That recognition can also help friends decide whether to play together.

WIPO reports that games built on existing IP can be lower-risk ventures because they may draw on an established fan base more willing to spend on a new game. “Lower-risk” does not mean safe, and it does not predict the quality of an individual release. It describes an advantage in finding an audience, not a guarantee that the audience will remain satisfied.

Systems refined over time

A long-running series can carry forward controls, interfaces, accessibility options, competitive rules, or storytelling techniques that have already been tested with players. A sequel can spend less time explaining the basic identity of the series and more time refining a system, adding a new mode, or addressing a known weakness. The result depends on the team’s choices: continuity can be a foundation for improvement rather than an excuse to avoid change.

Community and shared context

Established franchises can support communities that exchange strategies, lore explanations, fan creations, and competitive knowledge. A new release may therefore feel like a shared event rather than a solitary discovery. Existing communities can also provide feedback that informs development and marketing, although feedback is not a substitute for disciplined design decisions.

What players risk with an established franchise

Expectation load

Fans usually want the new game to be recognizable and meaningfully different at the same time. Removing a signature mechanic can make the entry feel inauthentic; preserving every mechanic can make it feel like an expensive expansion. The team has to decide which elements are essential to the franchise’s identity and which can change.

WIPO describes the industry challenge as balancing consumers’ desire for novelty with their desire for some familiarity. That balance is why a sequel does not have to repeat every old feature, and why a new IP still needs a clear, legible promise. A franchise can evolve without abandoning its central appeal, but there is no universal formula for deciding how far to move.

Fatigue and diminishing surprise

WIPO warns that overusing sequels and spin-offs can create franchise fatigue. Fatigue is a risk, not an inevitable result of making another entry. A series may remain compelling when each release has a clear purpose, improves its systems, or reaches a new audience. It becomes tiring when the brand name does most of the work and the game offers little meaningful change.

Changes that satisfy no one

A franchise team may try to attract new players while retaining its core audience, producing compromises that weaken both goals. A redesign can be easier for newcomers but frustrating for veterans; a dense continuity can reward long-time fans while excluding people who start with the latest entry. Check whether the game explains its context and whether its new features serve a coherent design rather than merely signaling novelty.

How a franchise can adapt without losing its identity

Bandai Namco’s account of Tekken illustrates one approach. The company describes the series adapting as the market moved from arcades to home consoles while preserving its central appeal of bringing players and spectators together. During that transition, it says the series added character narratives, a story mode, and mini-games. The example shows how a franchise can retain a core social or competitive purpose while changing the surrounding structure for a different platform and audience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a company account of one series, not proof that the same method works everywhere. Its useful lesson for players is to look for the stable promise beneath the feature list. If the game’s new modes, presentation, and controls reinforce that promise, change may feel like evolution. If they distract from it, familiarity becomes a label rather than a design strength.

What the current numbers do—and do not—show

Recent industry figures provide context, but they should not be mistaken for a player preference study or a causal comparison of original and franchise games.

Statistic What it measures How to interpret it
62% Share of 300 developers in Unity’s 2025 Gaming Report survey who selected “maximize existing game” as their primary growth strategy. Developers commonly prioritize updates, deeper market penetration, or platform reach. It is not the share of games that are sequels and does not measure player preference.
23% Survey respondents selecting “develop new ideas in a different genre.” Shows one route developers consider for growth; it does not establish that players prefer cross-genre new IP.
10% Survey respondents selecting “develop new ideas in the same genre.” Indicates a smaller stated strategy category in this survey, not a market-wide success rate.
5% Survey respondents selecting “develop IPs into multiple games.” Measures a declared growth approach, not the number of successful franchises or the value players receive.
300 developers Cint CATI survey sample reported by Unity in 2025, with a stated margin of error of +/-5.66% at 95% confidence. The report also contains separate event surveys; those figures should not automatically be attributed to this sample.
11.6%–14.6% WIPO’s 2024 analysis of MobyGames data from 1950–2018 estimating the share of new games, excluding sequels, based on prior IP such as films, novels, or comics. This is not a direct original-versus-franchise split because sequels are excluded and “prior IP” is defined broadly.

WIPO’s broader conclusion is that success remains difficult to predict. The available evidence does not isolate IP status from genre, production budget, quality, marketing, timing, platform, or release conditions. There is no controlled study in this source set showing that one route produces higher player satisfaction, retention, or sales after those factors are held constant.

Tekken 8: a case study in recognition and execution

Bandai Namco reported that Tekken 8 shipped one million copies worldwide on its January 2024 release day and more than two million during the following month. The company attributed part of the performance to a simultaneous global home-console release and described continuing esports, licensing, and other efforts to extend the franchise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those are company-reported results, and they should not be attributed to brand recognition alone. A known series may help a game reach potential buyers, but launch timing, platform availability, marketing, reviews, content, and the quality of the release all matter. Tekken’s history also demonstrates why a franchise name is only a starting point: its adaptation from arcades to home consoles required changes in modes and presentation while preserving the series’ central appeal.

A player’s method for judging either route

  1. Identify the core promise. Describe the game without relying on its brand name. Is the appeal competitive mastery, exploration, character drama, construction, horror, cooperation, or something else?
  2. Separate inherited features from new ones. For a franchise, list which mechanics and characters return and what has materially changed. For a new IP, check whether the advertised novelty affects moment-to-moment play or is mostly setting and presentation.
  3. Check how much context is required. A sequel should explain the information needed to enjoy it, while a new IP should communicate its rules and tone clearly. Look for tutorials, demonstrations, accessibility information, and an honest description of the intended audience.
  4. Evaluate evidence of execution. Favor sustained gameplay footage, hands-on previews, independent reviews, and demonstrated performance over logos, cinematic trailers, or promises about future content.
  5. Assess the risk you personally can accept. If you need a familiar control scheme or established competitive ecosystem, a franchise may reduce uncertainty. If you value unusual premises and can tolerate discovering whether the concept works, a new IP may offer more upside.
  6. Consider the ownership and support picture. Do not assume that the developer owns an original world or that a franchise entry will receive long-term support. Look for clear information about rights, launch features, update commitments, and platform availability.

Questions to ask before buying

  • Can I explain what I will actually do during play, rather than only describing the setting?
  • For a franchise entry, which parts preserve the series’ central appeal, and which changes are substantial enough to justify this release?
  • For a new IP, does the game show a complete, repeatable core loop or only a compelling premise?
  • Am I buying because the game fits my interests, or because recognition makes the purchase feel less uncertain?
  • Does the launch version contain the modes and accessibility features I need, without relying on unspecified future additions?
  • Would I still be interested if the title had no famous characters or, conversely, if it were not part of a familiar series?

What creators’ incentives mean for players

Developers and publishers balance creative ambition against the cost and uncertainty of production. Unity’s 2025 report found that 62% of surveyed developers selected maximizing an existing game as their primary growth strategy, while smaller shares selected new ideas in a different genre, new ideas in the same genre, or developing IP into multiple games. These figures describe business priorities, not artistic quality.

Nadia Thorne, CEO and Producer at Black Salt Games, summarized the tension in Unity’s report: “It’s a balance between what the creative team has left to give and what our players want.” She also noted, “Expanding an IP often makes financial sense and is great for fans who want more of what they already love.” Her explanation of the alternative is equally important: “However, creating something new can reinspire the team, open up opportunities for even bigger success, and bring fresh ideas back to the original IP…” She concludes, “Ultimately the decision comes down to whether we’re delivering something meaningful for both our players and ourselves.”

For players, this means a sequel can be a deliberate way to refine a community’s favorite experience, while a new project can renew a team’s creative energy. Neither motive tells you whether the finished game is worth your time; the release still has to demonstrate a coherent, enjoyable experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical verdict

Choose a new IP when its premise is clear, its systems show genuine invention, and you are comfortable accepting more uncertainty about audience, support, and future direction. Choose an established franchise when the returning foundation matters to you and the new entry demonstrates meaningful improvements rather than relying on recognition alone.

The strongest games in either category make the relationship between familiarity and novelty understandable. A franchise earns its place by preserving what gives it identity while changing with purpose. A new IP earns attention by making an unfamiliar world immediately playable and worth remembering. Players gain the most when they judge that promise and its execution—not the label attached to it.
