No: the May 2026 “steam” GIF was not a confirmed Half-Life 3 clue, and Geoff Keighley’s Mojave Desert mystery from 2025 turned out to be a Divinity reveal. The sequel theories came from fans interpreting ambiguous imagery—not from an announcement by Valve.
What did the May 2026 “steam” GIF show?
On May 22, 2026, Geoff Keighley posted a GIF of steam rising from a street grate. The post, as described in contemporary reporting, included no text or context and did not mention Valve, Steam, or Half-Life. Fans connected the steam imagery to Valve’s platform and then to Half-Life 3, but that connection was speculation rather than an explicit clue. MegaGames’ report on the GIF describes the post and the fan interpretation.

A May 2026 report also said a rumored Spring 2026 reveal window had passed without an announcement. That is a dated report, not proof of what may have happened after it was published. Freedom251’s May 25, 2026 article and MegaGames’ reporting provide the contemporary context.
What was Keighley’s Mojave Desert mystery?
The teaser and the theories
On November 29, 2025, Keighley posted the phrase “regal.inspiring.thickness.” It was a what3words location pointing to California’s Mojave Desert—not a game title or a statement about Half-Life. The teaser prompted guesses about several franchises, including Half-Life 3. Push Square’s account of the teaser reports the phrase and the theories surrounding it.

The reveal
The mystery was resolved in December 2025: the desert monolith was connected to a Divinity reveal at The Game Awards. It was not a Half-Life 3 announcement. GameSpot’s coverage of the reveal and PC Gamer’s explanation of the statue as the Hellstone describe the outcome.
These are two separate events: the 2025 desert teaser had a later, identifiable answer, while the May 2026 GIF was an unrelated ambiguous image. Treating them as one ongoing trail of Half-Life clues mixes a resolved mystery with a fan interpretation.

How strong are the other Half-Life 3 claims?
HLX reports have a different basis from the two Keighley teasers. Ars Technica’s January 2, 2025 coverage summarized datamining and reporting from Valve watchers, including claims about playtests and game systems. Those reports may be worth following, but they are not direct confirmation from Valve. Ars Technica’s HLX coverage lays out the claims and their reported origins.
There is also historical context that can be mistaken for new evidence. Geoff Keighley’s account of Valve’s development history described an early-2010s non-VR project called Half-Life 3 and a later VR project called Borealis; both were shelved. That history explains why those names recur, but it does not show that a new sequel has been announced. Ars Technica’s 2020 account of the cancelled projects summarizes that history.

What is Valve’s official status on Half-Life 3?
The available May 2026 coverage reported no official Valve statement about Half-Life 3 at the time. That dated status should not be stretched into a claim about what Valve may have said since; the sources cited here do not establish Valve’s official status after that reporting. No exact Valve or Keighley quote confirming Half-Life 3 is established by these reports.

- AI - Neither friends nor enemies charge blindly into the fray. They can assess threats, navigate tricky terrain, and fashion weapons from whatever is at hand

How to judge the next “clue”
- Look for direct attribution. A Valve announcement is different from a fan theory, datamine, or report based on unnamed sources.
- Check what the clue actually names. A post that mentions Half-Life is stronger evidence than imagery that can be connected to the series through word association.
- Wait for the outcome. The Mojave theory shows why a later reveal matters: the statue mystery resolved as Divinity, not Half-Life 3.
