Neither is automatically the better buy. A new console can be worth its higher price when warranty coverage, straightforward returns, or a particular edition matters to you. A used or certified-refurbished console can offer better value when the savings are substantial and you can verify its condition or rely on a clear return policy and warranty. Compare the exact model and everything included—not just the headline price.
What counts as “used” matters
Seller labels describe different levels of assurance. A privately sold or retailer pre-owned console may be sold as-is or under the retailer’s own terms. A certified-refurbished console has typically gone through a seller’s inspection or restoration process, but the process and warranty depend on that seller. Read the specific listing and policy rather than assuming “refurbished” means the same thing everywhere.

Compare the same console before comparing prices
A lower price may reflect a different model rather than a better deal. Match the generation and model, disc or digital edition, storage, condition, and included accessories. Then compare the total price and protections attached to each offer.
- Edition and game access: A digital-only model is not interchangeable with a disc model if you own physical games or want to buy used discs. Xbox’s Series S listing states that it plays digital games only and does not play physical discs. Xbox Series S listing
- What is in the box: Confirm that a working controller, power cable, HDMI cable, stand where relevant, and any detachable disc drive are included. Check whether parts are original or replacements.
- Condition and inspection: Look for specific descriptions of cosmetic wear and functional testing, and identify who performed the inspection or repair.
- Protection: Compare warranty provider, duration, coverage, and any transfer requirements alongside the refund or replacement window.
- Seller and ownership: Check seller reputation, proof of purchase where available, and whether the console has been reset and removed from the previous owner’s account.

How to decide between the offers
- Set your requirements. Decide whether you need a disc drive, a particular storage capacity, specific accessories, or a console that supports games you already own.
- Find comparable listings. Compare the same model and edition, with the same included items and a similar condition. Calculate the full checkout price, including shipping or any return costs you can identify.
- Put protections beside the price. Note who backs the warranty, how long it lasts, how returns work, and who pays return shipping. A private seller’s assurance is not the same as a manufacturer warranty.
- Judge whether the savings justify the risk. A small discount may not compensate for limited recourse or missing accessories. A substantial verified saving may make sense when testing and return terms give you a practical way to address a problem.
- Check the exact policy before purchase. Save the listing and receipt, and confirm that the return deadline, exclusions, and coverage apply to that item.
Buying a used console from an individual
Arrange a test before handing over money when possible. PlayStation’s US buying guide recommends asking for a video showing ports, buttons, and the disc drive working where applicable, and checking that the seller has deactivated the console and no longer has access to it. Ask for a test video
Request a video of the console powering on and displaying through HDMI, the controller pairing and responding to button presses, the USB ports being checked, and the system connecting to Wi-Fi or a network. If the model has a disc drive, ask to see it read a disc. These checks do not guarantee future reliability, but they can reveal immediate faults.

Test at pickup and secure the console
If you meet in person, test the console and controller yourself. Look for visible damage and listen for unusual noise; stop if the system appears to overheat. Confirm that it has been reset and removed from the prior owner’s account, and ask for proof of purchase if available. If the seller will not allow reasonable checks, treat that as added risk rather than assuming the console works.

When a new console is the better value
- You want the simplest route to manufacturer-backed coverage and a clearly defined return process.
- The used offer is only slightly cheaper after you account for missing accessories, shipping, or return costs.
- You need a specific edition or included component that the used listing does not clearly provide.
- You cannot inspect the used console and the seller offers little or no recourse.
When used or certified-refurbished can be the better value
- The console is the exact model and edition you need, and the savings are meaningful against a current comparable new offer.
- You can inspect and test it, or the seller provides a credible warranty and workable return terms.
- The listing clearly identifies its condition, included accessories, and who is responsible if it arrives faulty.
- You have checked that a digital-only model fits your game library and buying habits.
