The games below are grouped by the kind of experience they offer, not ranked. “Recent” means current or recently discussed, not necessarily released in 2026.
What makes a game feel New Weird?
New Weird is a useful way to describe fiction that unsettles familiar genre boundaries with strange worlds, uncanny events, or realities that resist easy explanation. In games, it can point to very different experiences: a survival-driving adventure, psychological horror, a wordless journey, or an open-world sandbox. It is not a consistent official category, so this guide distinguishes developer descriptions from editorial fits.

The selections prioritize games explicitly described as New Weird by their creators or by a named publication, alongside a few clearly identified editorial analogues. The grouping reflects play style and tone, not an objective quality ranking.
For survival and uncanny exploration
Pacific Drive
New Weird status: editorial description. GameSpot framed Pacific Drive as New Weird in a 2026 PC feature; the game’s official site describes it as a first-person driving survival game. Its central appeal is the uneasy relationship between a driver, a car that needs constant attention, and the hazardous environment around them. Expect resource management and maintenance as well as exploration, rather than a conventional action-focused road trip.

The official site lists PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Steam, and Epic Games Store availability. PlayStation identifies the PS5 release date as February 22, 2024. Official Pacific Drive site; PlayStation game page; GameSpot’s New Weird PC feature.
Once Human
New Weird status: developer description. NetEase explicitly described Once Human as New Weird in a 2022 announcement, presenting it as an open-world sandbox survival game with crafting, firearms, territory building, and aberrant monsters. That announcement describes the game prospectively, so it does not establish current platform support or availability. Check the game’s current store listing before deciding whether it fits your platform.
AGNI: Village of Calamity
New Weird status: developer intention. Separuh Interactive’s COO Ardhan Fadhlurrahman said, “Our ambition with AGNI is to push the boundaries of Indonesian horror into the ‘New Weird’ space, creating a psychological thriller that challenges the player’s perception of reality.” The publisher describes a cinematic survival-horror story about an investigator searching a forbidden village for her missing partner amid ritual strangeness.

Wired Productions’ May 21, 2026 announcement lists PC, Xbox Series S|X, and PS5 as planned platforms. It does not confirm that the game has launched, so treat it as upcoming unless a current store page says otherwise. Wired Productions announcement.
For psychological and narrative strangeness
Indika
New Weird status: editorial fit, not an established formal genre label. Epic Games Store’s feature describes an alternate-history Russian adventure centered on a nun, faith, hallucinations, and abrupt turns among pathos, humor, and psychological horror. That mix makes it a strong option if you want a story that is deliberately disorienting rather than a conventional horror game. The cited feature does not establish current platform availability; check the store listing for your system.
The Haunting of Joni Evers
New Weird status: creator-stated inspiration. Causeway Studios says the game draws on Ozark folklore, tales of the American South, and New Weird media. It was announced for PC via Steam on January 13, 2025. That is an announcement date, not confirmation of its present release status; consult the current Steam listing for availability.

Control
New Weird status: editorial touchstone. GameSpot’s 2026 feature groups Remedy’s Control with New Weird touchstones and notes its paranormal atmosphere. It is a useful starting point if you are looking for uncanny, reality-bending fiction, though the cited source does not establish an official genre label. Check the current store page for platform and edition details.

LOVESICK
New Weird status: developer description. Rose City Games calls LOVESICK a “New-Weird exploration” game. It is a VR puzzle adventure set in band members’ mindscapes after a supernatural event, making it the clearest pick here for players who want surreal exploration without a combat-survival focus. Its official page says it is out now on Meta; check the Meta listing for headset compatibility and current availability.

Keeper
New Weird status: editorial fit, not an official genre tag in the cited material. Double Fine describes Keeper as “a story told without words”: an awakened lighthouse and a seabird travel through realms beyond understanding. The wordless presentation and surreal journey make it a fit for players drawn to atmospheric puzzle-adventure experiences rather than dialogue-heavy storytelling.
Rank #4
Double Fine says Keeper launched in October 2025 on Steam and Xbox platforms. Double Fine’s Keeper page; Steam listing.
How to choose your first New Weird game
- Want survival systems and exploration? Start with Pacific Drive; consider Once Human for sandbox survival, or watch for AGNI: Village of Calamity if cinematic horror is more your speed.
- Want a strange, story-led experience? Try Indika for psychological and tonal shifts, The Haunting of Joni Evers for folklore-inspired horror, or Control for a paranormal editorial touchstone.
- Want surreal atmosphere over combat? LOVESICK is the VR-led puzzle option; Keeper is the wordless, atmospheric journey.
- Need a specific platform? Confirm the game’s current store page before buying. Release status and platform claims above are limited to the cited official or publisher information.
Why this is not a ranked top ten
The available sources support eight useful candidates, but they do not provide two more equally substantiated picks or a common measure—such as review scores, sales, or a consistent genre test—for ranking ten games. Adding uncited titles to meet the headline would imply more certainty than the evidence allows. This is therefore a curated selection, not a definitive canon or a claim that one game is objectively best.
