What does it mean to be the final boss? Sometimes you control a former hero facing their old allies; sometimes you battle a playable character’s double or corrupted counterpart. In one unusual case, you briefly control the boss during the ending. This list uses “you’re the final boss” broadly, so the games differ in how directly they put you on the antagonist’s side.

Major spoilers for all ten games: the descriptions below reveal late-game identities, confrontations, and ending events. The selection and order reflect Unpaca’s editorial ranking, not an objective or independently measured comparison.

How these games make you the final boss

The clearest role reversal is Live A Live, where the player controls the antagonist against the heroes. Other entries have you fight someone you previously played, such as a returning protagonist, or face a transformed or closely matched opponent. Shadow of the Colossus is the outlier: its brief playable sequence puts you in control of a boss-like form rather than a conventional final duel.

The list below follows Unpaca’s August 9, 2025 article and its explanations of each game’s fit. It is best read as a set of different takes on the premise, not as a claim that every entry makes the player the villain in the same way.

10 games where you’re the final boss

1. Live A Live: Oersted/Odio against the heroes

This is the most literal role reversal on the list. Unpaca says that completing the seven main scenarios unlocks a medieval scenario centered on Oersted. After he is framed as the Lord of Dark, the Domain of Hate scenario lets the player control Oersted/Odio against the other heroes. Instead of merely fighting a former protagonist, you take the antagonist’s side in the conflict.

2. Black Myth: Wukong: the Stone Monkey and Great Sage’s Broken Shell

Unpaca describes the Destined One’s final confrontation with Wukong’s cast-off remains. The opponent appears first as the Stone Monkey and then as the Great Sage’s Broken Shell. The encounter works as a mirror match: the adversary reflects the protagonist’s acquired identity and abilities.

3. In Stars and Time: Siffrin faces the party

After the King’s defeat, protagonist Siffrin undergoes an emotional collapse and the party confronts him, according to Unpaca’s summary. The conflict draws on the story’s time loops and Siffrin’s fear of separation, making this a confrontation with a character the player has spent the game controlling rather than a newly introduced enemy.

4. Pokémon Gold and Silver: Red at Mt. Silver

Red, protagonist of the first-generation games, appears as a late-game opponent at Mt. Silver after the player has cleared the Johto and Kanto leagues, as Unpaca describes it. The significance is recognition: the challenger is an earlier player hero, not a villain revealed at the end.

5. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep: Terra-Xehanort

Unpaca describes Aqua facing Terra while Xehanort still exerts influence over his body. The connection to a former playable character comes through Terra’s familiar abilities and Keyblade skills. The encounter turns that familiarity into the source of the conflict.

6. Prototype 2: Alex Mercer

Alex Mercer, protagonist of the first Prototype, becomes the antagonist of its sequel, according to Unpaca. His transformations and combat abilities call back to the earlier game, so the threat is also a reminder of the character players once controlled.

7. NieR: Automata: A2 and 9S

Unpaca says the final path leads to a choice of which android to represent in the last confrontation. A2 and 9S, both familiar playable characters, can therefore become opponents to one another. The article also notes that the outcome differs depending on who wins.

8. Doom Eternal: the Dark Lord in The Ancient Gods Part Two

This entry refers specifically to The Ancient Gods Part Two, not the base game’s final boss. Unpaca describes the Dark Lord taking a Slayer-like form and using a related combat kit, setting up a fight against a close combat mirror of the Doom Slayer.

9. Lies of P: the Nameless Puppet

Unpaca describes the Nameless Puppet as a prototype of the protagonist, designed to house Carlo’s essence and sealed away because of its violence. Its similar appearance and combat options make it a player-like mirror: the final opponent resembles the figure at the center of the game’s journey.

10. Shadow of the Colossus: transformed Wander

In a brief closing sequence, Dormin animates Wander as a colossus-like being, and the player controls him while Emon’s soldiers attack, according to Unpaca. This fits the premise through a short playable boss-like interlude rather than a conventional final duel against a former ally.

Which games most directly put you in the boss’s role?

If “you’re the final boss” means playing as the antagonist against the heroes, Live A Live is the clearest fit in this selection. If it means confronting a familiar player character, Pokémon Gold and Silver, Prototype 2, and NieR: Automata make that history central to the matchup. Black Myth: Wukong, Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part Two, and Lies of P lean more on a transformed or closely matched mirror. Shadow of the Colossus briefly hands the player control of the boss-like figure itself.

Those categories are a way to compare the examples, not an official classification. The phrase covers several different experiences: controlling an antagonist, fighting a past or alternate playable character, and briefly taking control of a transformed figure.
