Amazon’s final content release was Season 10 and the Nighthaven update in October 2025. The game was delisted on January 15, 2026, and its servers are scheduled to close on January 31, 2027. In-game purchases ended July 20, 2026.
What does “ceasing development” mean for New World?
Amazon ended new content releases after Season 10 and Nighthaven. That means players should not expect another season or content expansion. It did not mean the servers closed immediately: Amazon initially said the game would remain online through 2026, then set a specific shutdown date in its January 2026 announcement.
While the service remains available, Amazon says it will not add content or conduct further server merges. It will continue monitoring bugs and performance, and world bosses and bonus weeks are planned to continue until shutdown. These limited service activities are not new content releases.

Can you still play New World: Aeternum?
Owners can play while the servers remain online, up to the announced shutdown date. The game is online-only and requires a persistent internet connection; it has no offline mode. Steam’s listing identifies the online requirement. Once Amazon takes the service offline, players will not be able to continue playing through the supported game service.

How the Amazon layoffs relate to the decision
The announcement came amid Amazon Games role reductions and broader cuts to MMO development. PC Gamer reported on October 28, 2025 that Amazon was making significant reductions at its Irvine and San Diego studios and its central publishing team. Its report reproduced a statement from Steve Boom, Amazon’s vice president of audio, Twitch, and games, saying the company had decided to halt a significant amount of first-party AAA development work, particularly around MMOs. The layoffs are relevant context, but Amazon’s New World announcement did not say that layoffs alone caused the end of content updates. Its stated reason was that continued support with new content was no longer sustainable. PC Gamer reported Amazon-wide planned job cuts of 14,000, a company-wide figure—not the number of Amazon Games or New World employees affected. The reporting did not disclose an Amazon Games layoff count.
