New World: Aeternum will go offline on January 31, 2027, but Amazon ended new content development earlier, with Season 10: Nighthaven. Amazon announced the final content update alongside reporting of layoffs at Amazon Games; however, the company’s own explanation was that continued content updates were no longer sustainable, not that layoffs caused the decision.
What Amazon announced—and what “cease development” means
On October 28, 2025, Amazon Games said Season 10: Nighthaven would be the final content release for New World on PC and consoles. The company wrote that, after four years of updates and a major console release, “it is no longer sustainable to continue supporting the game with new content updates.” Amazon’s announcement did not say the game would immediately close: it said servers were intended to remain available through 2026 and promised at least six months’ notice before changes affecting playability.
Amazon later set a firm end date. In its January 15, 2026 update, it said New World: Aeternum would be taken offline on all platforms on January 31, 2027. That is the current announced shutdown date, rather than the earlier, less specific plan to keep servers live through 2026. The January update also separates the end of new content from the end of access: existing owners can continue playing on their purchased platform until shutdown.

Did Amazon Games layoffs cause the decision?
Layoffs and a reduction in first-party MMO work were reported at Amazon Games around the time the final-content announcement appeared. Game Developer’s contemporaneous report provides that broader studio context. But Amazon’s official New World announcement did not identify layoffs as the cause; it attributed the end of new content to the unsustainability of continuing updates. The reporting establishes timing and context, not an official causal explanation.

Can you still buy or play New World?
Buying the game
No. Amazon said the game was delisted and unavailable for purchase beginning January 15, 2026. This is distinct from the server shutdown: players who already own it can continue playing on the platform where they purchased it until January 31, 2027.
Buying in-game items
Amazon said purchases of Marks of Fortune and anything else in-game would stop beginning July 20, 2026. That cutoff has passed, so there is no longer an in-game purchase window under the announced plan.

Playing after the final update
The end of new content did not itself make the game unplayable. Amazon’s January 2026 notice allowed existing owners to keep playing until the announced all-platform shutdown date. The company’s October 2025 post had promised at least six months’ notice before a change affecting playability; the later notice supplied a specific date.

There are three separate milestones: new content ended with Nighthaven, sales and in-game purchases ended on their respective announced dates, and server access is scheduled to end January 31, 2027. Players deciding whether to return should therefore treat the game as playable only for the remaining announced service period, not as an ongoing live-service title with future content planned.
