A 58-year-old New Zealand man died after becoming unconscious in the water during the Peng Chau Challenge open-water swimming race in Hong Kong on October 1, 2026, according to local news reports. The circumstances and cause of death had not been established in the reports available at the time.
What happened off Peng Chau
Police received a report at about 12:21 p.m. on October 1 that a male swimmer had become unconscious in waters off Tung Wan Beach, Peng Chau, The Standard and Hong Kong 01 reported. Event personnel brought him ashore before he was taken to Peng Chau Clinic.
The Standard described him as a foreign national in his 50s. Hong Kong 01 and on.cc identified him more specifically as a 58-year-old New Zealand national living in Hong Kong and holding a Hong Kong identity card. Those details are attributed to those outlets.
Rescue and hospital transfer
Reports say the swimmer was transferred by Government Flying Service helicopter from Peng Chau to Eastern Hospital. Rescuers performed CPR, using an automated chest-compression device, and he was pronounced dead after resuscitation attempts.
