Sydney FC defender Kirsty Fenton has been released from her contract at her request and is taking a break from professional football. She said the rehabilitation after her 2024 ACL injury took a lot out of her and that her motivation to play had fallen. Fenton hopes to return to professional football in the future; she has not announced her retirement.
Why is Kirsty Fenton taking a break from football?
In a statement reported by AAP on 3 October 2026, Fenton described the toll of rehabilitation and its effect on her motivation:
“After doing my ACL in 2024, I found the rehab took a lot out of me and I’ve since seen my level of motivation to play drop,” Fenton said in a statement.
That is Fenton’s explanation of her experience. It does not establish a medical reason that makes her unable to play, or that the injury alone caused her decision.

What does the contract release mean?
Fenton asked to end her Sydney FC contract, which had two years remaining, and the club agreed. She described the move as a break to focus elsewhere, with a possible return to the professional game later:
“I’m looking forward to taking this break, focusing my attention elsewhere and coming back in the future to resume my professional career.”

She also said she hoped to rediscover her passion for football, thanking Sydney FC for supporting her decision. Her comments indicate an intended break, not a permanent departure from the sport.

Fenton’s Sydney FC record and career context
AAP reported that Fenton was 23 at the time of its 3 October 2026 story. She won a premiership-championship double with Sydney FC in 2022–23, then another championship in 2023–24. She has also represented the Young Matildas.
Fenton’s break is different from Nat Tobin’s absence
Fenton’s contract release should not be confused with Sydney FC captain Nat Tobin’s earlier absence. In August 2026, the club announced Tobin would return for the 2026–27 season after spending a year away from playing during pregnancy. Tobin’s announcement concerned a planned return to the same club; Fenton requested a contract release and has said she hopes to resume her professional career in the future.
