Microsoft has announced Project Helix, its next-generation Xbox platform, but it has not announced a consumer release date. The company says developer alpha hardware will begin shipping in 2027. That is a development milestone, not confirmation that shoppers can buy the next Xbox that year. The Xbox-branded handheld on the table is ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally line—not a confirmed first-party Microsoft handheld launching this year.
Is the next Xbox really coming in 2027?
A 2027 consumer launch is possible, but it is not a dated commitment from Microsoft. The firm’s official announcement says Project Helix alpha hardware will go to developers beginning in 2027. Xbox executive Jason Ronald put it this way: “We plan to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027.” Developer alpha hardware is intended for development work; its arrival does not establish when a finished product will go on sale.
There is a separate reason the year is being discussed: Tom’s Hardware reported in 2025 that AMD CEO Lisa Su said development of Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox silicon was “progressing well to support a launch in 2027.” That is a reported roadmap statement, not a Microsoft retail-date announcement. Microsoft and AMD have not announced a consumer release window in the cited reporting.
So the accurate reading is: 2027 is confirmed for the start of developer alpha shipments, and it has been reported as a possible target for launch. A 2027 retail release remains unconfirmed.

What is Project Helix: a console, a PC, or both?
Microsoft describes Project Helix as its next-generation Xbox hardware platform, designed to play Xbox console and PC games. That suggests a platform intended to bridge console and PC gaming, but it does not yet answer practical questions such as the final operating system experience, game compatibility rules, storefronts, or how developers will distribute games.
Microsoft has not provided a final specification sheet or announced a consumer price. Until it does, “console and PC games” is the meaningful official description—not a basis for assuming that every PC game, service, or accessory will work on the finished system.

Is Microsoft releasing an Xbox handheld this year?
There is no confirmed first-party Microsoft handheld launch in the information available here. The concrete Xbox-branded handheld is ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X, a partner-developed Windows gaming handheld PC. Its Xbox branding does not make it a Microsoft-made Xbox console.
Windows Central reported that Microsoft sidelined its internal first-party handheld effort while teams focused on optimizing Windows 11 for handhelds and on the ASUS partner project, known internally as Kennan. The report said Microsoft still wanted to make a first-party handheld in the future, but it did not establish a consumer launch date. Accordingly, “a new Xbox handheld is coming this year” should not be treated as a confirmed Microsoft product announcement.

Choose an Ally if you want a handheld now
Consider the ROG Xbox Ally line if you specifically want a Windows handheld PC and are comfortable choosing between ASUS models based on their own current specifications, price, and availability. The cited reporting does not provide those model-by-model details, so check ASUS’s current product information and local retailers before deciding.

Wait if you want Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox platform
Waiting makes sense if your priority is Project Helix’s stated aim of supporting Xbox console and PC games, rather than owning a handheld immediately. The trade-off is uncertainty: the 2027 alpha schedule is for developers, and the consumer release date, price, specifications, and compatibility details have not been announced.
