Windows 11 is the clear leader among operating systems represented in Steam’s August 2026 Hardware & Software Survey: its 64-bit version accounts for 70.97% of surveyed systems, compared with 22.90% for Windows 10 64-bit. Windows 10 is declining, but nearly one in four surveyed systems still runs it.
How many Steam gamers use Windows 11?
Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey for August 2026 lists Windows 11 64-bit at 70.97% of systems in its combined Windows, macOS, and Linux table. Windows 10 64-bit is at 22.90%. These are shares of surveyed systems, not a count of unique people.
The gap is 48.07 percentage points. Windows 11’s share is about 3.1 times Windows 10’s, but that ratio describes the survey shares; it does not mean Valve counted 3.1 times as many individual Windows 11 players.
Is Windows 11 more popular than Windows 10 on Steam?
Yes. Windows 11 has a substantial majority in the August 2026 survey. Windows 10 nevertheless remains a significant minority: its 22.90% share is close to one in four surveyed systems.

| Operating system | August 2026 share | Change from previous month |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 64-bit | 70.97% | +0.71 percentage points |
| Windows 10 64-bit | 22.90% | −0.40 percentage points |
| Windows overall | 93.95% | +0.28 percentage points |
| macOS overall | 2.14% | −0.18 percentage points |
| Linux overall | 3.90% | −0.11 percentage points |
Valve’s figures show the two Windows versions moving in opposite directions month over month: Windows 11 gained 0.71 percentage points, while Windows 10 lost 0.40. That is a snapshot of the change in reported survey shares, not an explanation of why systems changed or proof that Windows 10 users directly upgraded to Windows 11.
What does the Steam survey measure?
The survey reports operating systems and other hardware and software information for participating Steam systems. Valve says, “Participation in the survey is optional, and anonymous.” It uses the collected information to help make decisions about technology investments and products.

Because participation is optional, the percentages should be read as the distribution among systems represented in the survey—not as a census of every Steam user, all PC gamers, or all computers. The results also do not identify players’ reasons for using an operating system.
Did Steam users switch to Windows 11?
The August figures alone cannot establish how many Windows 10 users switched. They show Windows 11’s reported share rising and Windows 10’s falling compared with the previous month. They do not track individual users or say whether the difference reflects upgrades, changes in the participating systems, or other factors.

Does Steam’s 32-bit Windows cutoff affect Windows 10 users?
Steam Support says that “As of January 1, 2026, Steam stopped supporting systems running 32-bit versions of Windows.” Its notice identifies Windows 10 32-bit as the only 32-bit Windows version then supported and says it accounted for 0.01% of systems reported through the Steam Hardware Survey in 2026.
That cutoff concerns 32-bit Windows, not Windows 10 64-bit. The survey’s 22.90% Windows 10 figure is specifically for the 64-bit version, so it should not be confused with the much smaller 32-bit segment affected by the policy.
