For a small Nextcloud Talk installation, use a properly supported Nextcloud server with HTTPS, a production database, and a compatible webserver/PHP stack. For larger meetings, Nextcloud’s published High Performance Backend (HPB) starting point is 8 GB RAM, 32 GB of free disk space, and four AES-capable Intel i7/Xeon cores. Nextcloud estimates that minimum HPB profile at at least about 150 concurrent users, but that figure is tied to the documented profile rather than a universal promise for every codec, resolution, recording job, or network.

The right size is determined by concurrent active participants, simultaneous calls, media topology, and available upstream and downstream bandwidth. There is no single “Talk server” specification that fits every deployment.

What determines Nextcloud Talk capacity?
Talk uses the main Nextcloud system for application logic, authentication, storage, the database, and signaling when the integrated signaling server is enabled. Every concurrent active participant adds work. Audio-only users and chat activity still consume application and signaling resources, even though they send less media than a full video participant.
Capacity therefore depends on more than the number of accounts in Nextcloud. Plan around these variables:

- Concurrent participants: people active at the same time matter more than the total number of registered users.
- Number of simultaneous calls: several small calls can create a different load pattern from one large meeting.
- Media topology: direct peer connections and an HPB selective-forwarding design place processing and bandwidth in different locations.
- Video quality and screen sharing: higher resolutions and shared screens increase media traffic.
- Recording or transcription: these add workload that must be included in your own capacity plan.
- Network conditions: upstream capacity, downstream capacity, NAT behavior, and firewall rules can determine whether a call connects at all.
Because these variables interact, a server that is adequate for occasional two-person calls may be unsuitable for a busy meeting schedule or a webinar, even when the account count is identical.
Prerequisites for reliable Talk calls
Use HTTPS
Browser WebRTC calling requires HTTPS. Serve the Nextcloud site and Talk through a valid TLS configuration rather than plain HTTP. A deployment that works for file access over HTTP is not automatically suitable for browser video calls.

Choose a production database
Use MySQL or MariaDB with utf8mb4 support for a serious Talk installation. SQLite is not recommended for Talk calls because it is intended for lightweight use and can become a bottleneck when signaling and chat activity are concurrent.
Configure the webserver and PHP correctly
Apache or Nginx must be paired with a supported PHP-FPM and MPM configuration. Talk relies on long polling for chat and signaling; proxy, timeout, or process settings that terminate long-held requests can look like a video problem even when the media service is healthy.
Provide a supported browser
Use a current Firefox or Chrome/Chromium release for the full Talk video-call and screen-sharing experience. Browser age, disabled WebRTC features, or restrictive enterprise policies can prevent camera, microphone, or screen-sharing access independently of server capacity.

What the main Nextcloud server does
In a basic installation, the Nextcloud server remains the central application endpoint. It authenticates users, stores files and chat data, handles database operations, and provides signaling so clients can discover and negotiate a call. This can be a dedicated physical server or a reasonably provisioned virtual server for small and medium installations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShared hosting is a poor fit when it limits long-running processes, restricts WebSocket or chat-server software, or prevents the administrator from opening the required network ports. Check the host’s terms and technical limits before committing to it; a low monthly price does not compensate for unavailable signaling or TURN services.
For small calls, keeping everything on one Nextcloud host minimizes administration. As concurrency grows, however, media traffic and call processing can compete with file access, previews, background jobs, and database activity. Isolating media services lets the application server concentrate on those core tasks.
When to add the High Performance Backend
The High Performance Backend is optional for very small calls, but Nextcloud’s quick-install guidance says it is already helpful when a call reaches three participants. It becomes increasingly valuable for larger meetings, webinars, and calls that may reach hundreds or, in suitable designs, thousands of participants.
HPB provides a selective forwarding unit. It receives media streams and forwards the appropriate streams to participants instead of requiring every client to upload a separate stream to every other client. This reduces the upload burden on each participant and moves call processing away from the main Nextcloud instance. Nextcloud describes the HPB as solving a bandwidth bottleneck and allowing a single call to scale to much larger numbers of participants.

HPB does not make capacity unlimited. The HPB host still needs enough CPU, memory, network throughput, and open ports for the actual number of streams and calls. A high-resolution meeting, extensive screen sharing, or recording workload can require more than the published minimum. Treat the baseline as a starting point for testing, not a guaranteed capacity target for every Talk version or media profile.
Published HPB starting specification
Nextcloud’s current HPB requirements page lists the following minimum profile:
| Resource | Published HPB figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | Starting allocation for the documented minimum profile. |
| Storage | 32 GB free disk | Free space requirement on the HPB host; plan additional capacity for operating-system logs and your own operational needs. |
| CPU | Four AES-capable i7/Xeon cores | The documented processor baseline; AES capability is part of the requirement. |
| Estimated concurrency | At least about 150 concurrent users | Nextcloud’s estimate for that HPB profile, not a universal result for every resolution, codec, recording job, or topology. |
The “about 150” estimate must stay attached to those hardware assumptions. It should not be reused as a promise that any four-core machine, any cloud instance, or any Talk workload will support 150 people. Measure your own peak concurrency and media pattern, then leave headroom for database work, background jobs, monitoring, and traffic spikes.
Do you need a TURN server?
In almost all real-world deployments, yes. TURN relays WebRTC traffic when a participant is behind symmetric NAT, a restrictive firewall, or a mobile or managed network that will not permit a direct media path. Configure TURN to listen on port 443 where possible; port 80 may be used when 443 is unavailable.
HPB does not remove this requirement. HPB normally uses a WebRTC media range of 20,000–40,000. A client that can reach only port 443 can use TURN, which relays that traffic to the HPB media range. Without a reachable relay, some users may connect successfully while others cannot establish audio or video.

TURN and HPB can run on separate services or separate hosts. If they share one machine, plan bindings carefully: both may need port 443, so you may need separate IP addresses or distinct listener arrangements. Decide the port layout before deployment rather than discovering the conflict during a production call.
Deployment patterns to consider
Single Nextcloud server
Put the application, database, integrated signaling, and basic Talk services on one properly provisioned host. This is the simplest arrangement for small installations with limited concurrent calls. It has the fewest moving parts, but all file, database, chat, and call workloads compete for the same CPU, memory, disk, and network resources.
Nextcloud plus a separate HPB
Keep accounts, files, and application traffic on the main Nextcloud server while placing the media forwarding service on another host. This isolates call processing and makes it easier to increase media capacity without moving the storage system. You still need TURN where client networks require relaying, and you must account for the HPB host’s media ports and bandwidth.

Use distinct hosts or managed services for media forwarding and relay traffic when you want stronger isolation or do not want to operate Internet-facing media infrastructure yourself. Confirm where each service listens, which firewall rules are required, and how support responsibilities are divided. A managed HPB option can reduce operational work, but its performance and pricing must be evaluated against your own concurrency and media requirements.
Compare these patterns using the same questions: expected concurrent participants, simultaneous calls, video resolution, screen sharing, recording or transcription, upstream and downstream bandwidth, firewall and NAT conditions, database and webserver support, operational complexity, and whether storage and application services should be isolated from media.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Bandwidth and capacity planning without a universal number
Nextcloud does not publish one bandwidth-per-user figure that applies to every Talk call. Do not size a server by multiplying an invented per-user number. Instead, build a workload model from your own use:
- Record peak concurrency. Count the maximum number of active participants, not just accounts. Include audio-only attendees and chat users who are active during meetings.
- Separate call patterns. Document how many meetings run at once and whether they are two-person calls, small group calls, large meetings, or webinars.
- Describe media behavior. Note camera resolution, screen sharing, muted versus active cameras, and whether recordings or transcriptions run during calls.
- Map the topology. Identify which traffic reaches the main Nextcloud server, which goes through HPB, and which is relayed by TURN.
- Check network limits. Measure available upstream and downstream bandwidth on every involved host and verify that firewalls allow the required listeners and ranges.
- Add operational headroom. Leave resources for database queries, file activity, background jobs, upgrades, monitoring, and short-lived peaks instead of allocating every CPU cycle to the average call.
Use the HPB minimum as an initial test environment, then observe CPU, memory, network throughput, media errors, and connection success during a realistic peak. Increase resources or split services when the measurements show contention; do not wait for a major meeting to expose the limit.

Practical pre-deployment checklist
- Install a supported Nextcloud release on a dedicated or adequately provisioned virtual server.
- Enable HTTPS and verify that browsers can grant camera, microphone, and screen-sharing permissions.
- Use MySQL or MariaDB with
utf8mb4; avoid SQLite for production Talk calls. - Configure Apache or Nginx with a supported PHP-FPM/MPM combination and confirm that long polling remains connected.
- Test current Firefox and Chrome/Chromium clients from the networks your users actually use.
- Decide whether the expected workload justifies HPB; treat three or more participants as the point at which it can already help.
- Provision TURN, normally reachable on port 443, and test from a restrictive network rather than only from the office LAN.
- Open HPB’s 20,000–40,000 WebRTC media range where required, or verify that TURN can relay clients that cannot reach it.
- Resolve port-443 bindings before placing HPB and TURN on the same host.
- Run a peak-style pilot with the intended number of cameras, screens, and simultaneous calls, then record resource and connection metrics.
Troubleshooting common failures
Users can join but have no audio or video
Check TURN reachability, firewall rules, and NAT behavior first. A direct path may work on a permissive home network while failing on a corporate, hotel, school, or mobile network. Confirm that TURN listens on the advertised port and that HPB’s media range is reachable directly or through the relay.
Chat messages or call signaling stall
Inspect the Apache or Nginx proxy, PHP-FPM, and MPM settings. Long-polling requests that time out or are killed prematurely can break chat and signaling even when CPU and memory look normal.
The Nextcloud host becomes slow during meetings
Look for contention between Talk, database activity, file operations, previews, and background jobs. Move media forwarding to HPB, reduce competing scheduled work during peak periods, or increase resources after measuring the bottleneck.
Only some participants fail to connect
This pattern commonly indicates a network-path problem rather than a universal server limit. Compare a successful client with a failing client, test from a restricted network, and verify TURN credentials, port 443 access, and relay logs.
Calls work with two people but degrade in a group
Group calls change the media and bandwidth pattern. Introduce HPB for calls of three or more participants, then test the expected group size and video behavior rather than extrapolating from a two-person call.
Bottom line
Start with a supported HTTPS Nextcloud stack and a production database, then size for peak concurrent activity rather than total accounts. HPB is optional for the smallest calls but becomes useful from roughly three participants and is the practical path for larger meetings. Use Nextcloud’s published HPB baseline—8 GB RAM, 32 GB free disk, and four AES-capable i7/Xeon cores—as a measured starting point, not a blanket guarantee. Provide TURN, usually on port 443, because restrictive client networks are normal, and validate the complete topology under realistic peak load before relying on it for important calls.
