NFL Player Props vs. Game Bets: How They Differ and How to Choose

Player props hinge on an individual player or event; game bets hinge on the winner, margin, or combined score. Compare the exact line and rules before choosing.

NFL player props are wagers on an individual player’s performance or a specific event; game bets are wagers on which team wins, the margin, or the combined score. To choose between them, start with the exact outcome you want to evaluate, then check the line, odds, settlement rules, and whether the market is legally available where you are. Neither type is inherently easier or more profitable.

What separates a player prop from a game bet?

The key difference is what determines whether the wager wins. A player prop is tied to an individual player’s performance or a specific event, rather than directly to the game’s outcome. DraftKings’ U.S. help page gives examples such as a player going over a stated statistical threshold or scoring a touchdown (DraftKings’ prop bet definition).

Game bets focus on the teams or the game’s overall scoring. The main examples are the moneyline, point spread, and total (over/under), as described by NFL Support’s moneyline explanation, spread explanation, and total explanation.

Market What the wager is about What must happen
Player prop An individual player’s performance or a specific event The player or event must meet the market’s stated condition; read the precise wording and settlement terms.
Moneyline The game’s winner Your selected team must win, subject to the market’s tie rules.
Point spread The result with a points handicap Your selected team must cover the spread—win by enough, or, for an underdog, stay within the line.
Total (over/under) Both teams’ combined points The final combined score must finish above or below the posted number, according to the market rules.

How the game-bet markets work

Moneyline: pick the winner

A moneyline is a wager on which team wins. The odds indicate the potential payout, not a guarantee of success. In NFL Support’s explanatory example, odds of -150 mean risking $150 to win $100; odds of +150 mean a successful $100 wager could win $150. Those are examples of how the prices work, not current odds. The same NFL Support page describes a tie as a push, with the wager returned.

Point spread: pick a result relative to the line

A spread applies a points handicap to the final result. If a team is favored by 10 points, it generally needs to win by more than 10 to cover; the underdog can cover by winning or by losing by fewer points than the spread. Settlement depends on the exact line: NFL Support’s -10.5/+10.5 example cannot push because a final margin cannot land on a half point. With a whole-number line, an exact margin can push.

Total: pick over or under combined scoring

A total asks whether the teams’ combined points will be over or under a posted number. NFL Support says the game total in its explanation includes overtime. Check the specific market’s rules, particularly if the sportsbook lists a different settlement condition.

How to choose a market

  1. Identify the outcome you are actually evaluating. If it concerns one player’s statistic or a specific event, a prop may match it. If it concerns the winner, margin, or combined score, consider the corresponding game market.
  2. Read the full line, not just the market label. A prop’s player, statistic, threshold, and wording define the condition. A spread or total’s number determines what counts as covering, going over, or going under.
  3. Understand the price and possible payout. Odds express the market’s price and potential return; they do not establish that a bet is likely to win or profitable.
  4. Check settlement and participation rules. Confirm how the sportsbook treats ties, pushes, overtime, player participation, and any void conditions for that exact market.
  5. Verify local legality and availability. Betting rules vary by jurisdiction and channel. Consult current local law and the relevant licensed regulator or operator before relying on a market being available.

This framework does not establish that props or game bets are easier, safer, more accurate, or more profitable. It helps match the wager to the outcome and rules you understand.

Why sportsbook rules and location matter

Settlement terms are not universal. For example, New Jersey FanDuel terms state that offensive player props require the player to participate in at least one offensive snap for the bet to stand. That is an operator- and state-specific example, not a rule to assume applies at every sportsbook. Read the current terms attached to the market you are considering (FanDuel New Jersey NFL terms).

Legal availability also varies. The NFLPA’s 2022 policy says NFL personnel may not bet on NFL games and related events, including individual participant performance; it also notes that legality varies by state and channel. That policy governs NFL personnel and is not a complete guide to public betting law (NFLPA gambling policy). Virginia law provides one jurisdiction-specific statutory definition of a prop bet, not a nationwide definition (Virginia Code § 58.1-4000).

Responsible gambling and NFL personnel

NFL.com reported that players received mandatory in-person education on the league’s gambling policy in 2024. In that report, NFL senior vice president of social responsibility Anna Isaacson said, “We have a very long history of supporting critical societal issues, and accommodating responsible gambling is an issue that we know is impacting people all across the country.” The league’s education and personnel rules do not determine whether a particular public wager is legal or how a sportsbook settles it (NFL.com report on player policy education).
