This comparison is about rugby union, not rugby league; sevens and other modified formats also have variations.
How many players are on the field?
NFL teams have 11 players on the field at a time. Those players belong to offense, defense, or special teams, and personnel commonly change between plays. The NFL rulebook sets the rules for scrimmage, formations, and player eligibility; tactical jobs depend on the formation and situation. NFL 2026 Rulebook
In rugby union, each team may have up to 15 players in the playing area during play. The conventional arrangement divides them into eight forwards and seven backs. World Rugby Law 3 also addresses replacements, including front-row requirements; international matches allow up to eight replacements under that law, subject to the match rules. How does each sport handle possession and advancing the ball?
NFL: advance within a series of downs
An NFL scrimmage play begins with a snap. The offense has a series of downs to advance the ball the required distance and earn a new series; if it does not, possession may change. A play ends under the applicable dead-ball ruling, and the next down begins as a separate play. The rules for scrimmage, new series, and forward passes are set out in the NFL 2026 Rulebook.

Rugby union: retain or contest possession
Rugby union has no down counter. Players advance by carrying the ball, passing it laterally or backward, or kicking it. After a tackle, players may contest possession under the tackle and ruck laws, and play can continue rather than resetting for a new down.
Can you throw the ball forward?
In the NFL, a forward pass is allowed subject to the rules governing who may throw it, where, and when. In rugby union, a forward throw or pass is not a legal way to advance the ball. Teams instead run, kick, or pass sideways or backward; a forward throw or knock-forward can result in an infringement. See the NFL rulebook and World Rugby Laws of the Game.

Kicking matters in both sports, but it fits into different possession systems: an NFL kick can be part of a set play or a way to give up the ball, while rugby teams can use kicks during open play to gain territory or create an attacking opportunity.
What happens after a tackle?
NFL: the play becomes dead under the ruling
When a runner is ruled down or another dead-ball condition applies, the play ends. The teams then line up for the next down or possession changes, depending on the situation.

Rugby union: the ball may remain playable
A rugby tackle brings responsibilities for the tackled player and other players to release, stay on their feet where required, and play the ball legally. A ruck may form when players from both teams are in contact, on their feet, over the ball on the ground. World Rugby states that “The purpose of a ruck is to allow players to compete for the ball which is on the ground.” A tackle does not automatically produce a ruck. World Rugby Law 15: Ruck
What are the set pieces and restarts?
Rugby union uses scrums and lineouts as structured ways to restart or contest possession in specified situations. An NFL snap starts a scrimmage play; it is not the equivalent of a rugby scrum. The NFL play then unfolds as a discrete down, while rugby can continue through phases of play after a tackle or restart.

How do the positions compare?
The sports do not have exact position-for-position equivalents. NFL positions are tied to specialized units and formations; rugby union roles are conventionally grouped into forwards and backs, though laws do not prescribe every open-play task.
| Sport and role group | Typical responsibilities |
|---|---|
| NFL offense | Quarterbacks direct plays and commonly throw; running backs carry or block; receivers run routes and catch; offensive linemen block and protect. |
| NFL defense | Players stop runs, pressure passers, and cover receivers, with assignments shaped by the defensive formation. |
| NFL special teams | Specialists and unit players handle kicking plays. |
| Rugby union forwards | Commonly take part in scrums, lineouts, and close-range contests. |
| Rugby union backs | Commonly distribute the ball, kick, defend space, and attack at speed. |
A quarterback and a fly-half both help direct attacking play, but their rules, teammates, and possession systems differ. A running back and a rugby fullback are also only a rough analogy: the fullback is a back with responsibilities in rugby’s open-play structure, not simply a ball-carrier in an NFL role.

How does scoring differ?
Both sports offer several ways to score, but their scoring categories and values are not interchangeable. NFL scoring includes touchdowns, field goals, safeties, and post-touchdown tries. Rugby union scoring includes tries, conversions, penalty goals, and drop goals. Because the governing rules and competition details can change, consult the current NFL Rulebook or World Rugby Laws of the Game for exact values.
Why does one game feel more continuous?
NFL play is divided into timed quarters and frequent dead-ball pauses between downs. Rugby union typically has longer periods of live play, but it also stops for penalties, lineouts, scrums, injuries, and scoring. Exact match timing depends on the competition’s rules, so there is no single duration to apply across every format.
