Check your league’s lineup deadline and late inactive news before kickoff.
First, know what “backup quarterback” means
Here, a backup is the second quarterback on your fantasy roster, not necessarily an NFL team’s reserve quarterback. A benched fantasy player does not add to your starting-lineup score in the standard lineup model described by NFL Fantasy’s beginner guide. Your league’s roster rules determine how many quarterbacks you must start and which slots can accept them.
Start the backup when your starter cannot play
Bye week
A bye is a scheduled week without a game. If your format requires a quarterback in the lineup, plan to start an eligible replacement from your roster or add one from waivers. NFL Fantasy recommends planning bye-week depth and notes that managers may add a free agent ahead of a key player’s bye. Whether that is worth a bench spot depends on your roster and waiver options.
Inactive or doubtful availability
If your starter is officially inactive, use an eligible alternative if your league requires a quarterback starter. NFL Fantasy says teams designate inactives about 90 minutes before kickoff; that timing is useful context, not a substitute for checking the latest official status and your platform’s lock rules. Its Auto-Swap feature can bench players projected for zero and start the highest-ranked name in a manager’s backups list, but that feature is specific to NFL Fantasy and should not be assumed available in other leagues.

Questionable status or unresolved news
“Questionable” means availability is uncertain and may remain a game-time decision. Check the player’s current status and your platform’s lineup deadline rather than treating the label as either a guarantee he will play or a reason to bench him automatically. NFL Fantasy’s 2024 rules document says lineups can be changed before a player’s NFL team is scheduled to start; deadlines and current rules can differ by platform and league.
When both quarterbacks are available, compare the right factors
A healthy starter should not be benched solely because the backup has a seemingly easier matchup. Use the following factors together:

- Availability and health: Is the quarterback expected to suit up, and is there reliable information about any limitation?
- Role certainty: Is he expected to play a normal role, or is playing time uncertain?
- League format and scoring: Check whether you have a one-quarterback, superflex, or two-quarterback lineup and how your league scores passing, rushing, turnovers, bonuses, and extra slots. NFL Fantasy notes that roster rules vary between leagues.
- Matchup: Opponent context can help distinguish options. FantasyPros offers matchup ratings and discusses rotating quarterbacks around matchups, but a rating is an input—not a guarantee or a complete start/sit decision.
- Outcome range: Consider whether your situation calls for a steadier expected result or whether you are willing to accept more uncertainty. There is no source-established numeric cutoff for making that call; it is a strategic judgment based on your matchup and roster.
Weekly start/sit columns can illustrate how analysts assess a particular slate, but recommendations are time-specific. For example, NFL.com’s cited Week 7 quarterback column is an old example, not current player advice.

A second quarterback can cover a bye, an injury, or a matchup-based rotation. Its value depends on your lineup format, bench capacity, waiver access, and the opportunity cost of using that roster spot instead of another position. The available guidance does not establish a universal rule or threshold for how many quarterbacks to roster across league sizes, scoring settings, and bench lengths.

Make the lineup decision before the lock
- Check your league’s lineup slots and scoring. Confirm whether a quarterback is required, whether a flex slot can take one, and when lineups lock.
- Check the starter’s current availability. Look for official status updates and late inactive news. Do not assume that your platform will automatically replace an inactive player.
- Identify eligible alternatives. Compare a rostered second quarterback with waiver options, accounting for role certainty as well as matchup.
- Set the lineup before the relevant deadline. NFL Fantasy’s rules are platform-specific; use your own app and league settings for the actual lock time. NFL Fantasy’s team-management guide explains its own lineup process.
