Payback’s open-world design was part of its launch-era pitch. In Electronic Arts’ 2017 announcement, executive producer Marcus Nilsson described the game as adding “a huge open world” alongside its action-focused presentation, customization and story. That is a description of the game’s design at launch, not a guarantee about present-day online services.
Find and challenge roaming street racers
Campaign free roam is more than driving through an empty map. NPC racers from the street leagues cruise around Fortune Valley. When you encounter one, you can challenge that driver to a race rather than waiting for a marked event on the map.
These encounters connect exploration to progression. Defeating the roaming racers for a particular league helps unlock that league’s boss race. How multiplayer free roam works through AllDrive
Hangout sessions are the casual option
EA’s guide presents Hangouts as the part of AllDrive intended for meeting up and exploring. A Hangout is not a bracket, championship or required sequence of races. It is a social session in which players can gather their cars, drive around Fortune Valley and take team photos. You can treat it as a relaxed cruise, a place to show a customized build, or a starting point before deciding to enter a competitive activity.
The important distinction is that AllDrive gives you a shared map. Other players can be present in the same free-roam space, so the activity is about being together in the world rather than merely comparing results after separate races.
Exploration and events are separate choices
Joining an AllDrive session does not turn every minute into a race. You can remain in the Hangout-style exploration flow, drive between locations and organize your own meet-up. When you want a formal competition, you choose an event type designed for that purpose. This separation is why a player looking for “online free roam” should look for AllDrive or Hangout language, not only for multiplayer race playlists.

Free roam versus Speedlists
Speedlists are multiplayer tournaments spread across tracks and events. They are structured, competitive and designed around completing a defined series of activities. AllDrive Hangouts, by contrast, are the open-ended exploration option. Use the following distinction when deciding what to select:

Do not assume AllDrive works offline
Campaign exploration and multiplayer exploration are different systems. EA labels AllDrive as a multiplayer free-roam mode and separately lists the account and internet requirement. Nothing in the official descriptions establishes an offline version of AllDrive, so a disconnected console or PC should not be expected to provide the same shared Hangout experience.
Platform and edition checks
EA lists PlayStation among Payback’s supported platforms and identifies PS4 on its product information. A platform listing does not confirm that a specific store page, physical edition, used disc, region or current price is available. Before purchasing, confirm all of the following:
- The copy matches your platform, such as PS4, rather than a different console generation or PC release.
- Your account can use the required EA online services in your region.

- Test the internet connection. AllDrive is an online session. Verify that the console or PC is connected and that other platform services are functioning.

Which free-roam option should you use?
Choose campaign roaming when you want progression
Stay in the campaign if you want roaming racers tied to league progression, a clear solo objective and freedom to decide when to enter the next event. You can explore at your own pace and challenge an NPC racer when you are prepared to compete. This is the option that connects open-world driving directly to unlocking a league boss race.
Choose AllDrive when the social part matters
