Nginx RTMP Server Requirements for 1080p YouTube Loop Streaming

A 1080p NGINX RTMP relay has no universal CPU or RAM minimum. The right host depends on whether it relays an already encoded stream, transcodes with FFmpeg, or also records and packages output.

There is no universal CPU, RAM, or server-size minimum for a single 1080p YouTube loop sent through NGINX RTMP. If the video is already encoded to YouTube-compatible settings, NGINX can relay it without encoding the video; if you convert it with FFmpeg, the encoder workload changes the sizing question. Choose a host by the work it will actually do, then validate the complete stream path under load.

Start by deciding whether the server relays or transcodes

“NGINX RTMP server” can mean different workloads. The distinction matters more to CPU sizing than the 1080p label alone.

Relay-only: forward an already encoded stream

The arut nginx-rtmp-module project documentation describes push and pull relaying between RTMP servers. If your loop source already has the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe cadence you intend to send to YouTube, a relay host forwards the stream rather than encoding each frame. CPU is therefore not doing video encoding, though the host still needs stable connectivity, enough sustained network capacity, a working NGINX/module build, and reliable process supervision.

Transcoding: use FFmpeg to change the stream

If you need to change resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, or keyframe interval, FFmpeg adds an encoding workload. Its resource demand depends on the codec, software or hardware encoder, preset or quality target, source complexity, output settings, and number of simultaneous outputs. The reviewed documentation does not establish a universal CPU benchmark for those combinations, so a specific vCPU recommendation would be guesswork.

Set the YouTube output before estimating network capacity

YouTube Help’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives the following values. These are recommendations for the stream sent to YouTube, not hardware requirements for the NGINX host.

H.264, 1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 6 Mbps CBR; keyframe interval recommended at 2 seconds, no more than 4 seconds
AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps Not stated CBR; keyframe interval recommended at 2 seconds, no more than 4 seconds
AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps Not stated CBR; keyframe interval recommended at 2 seconds, no more than 4 seconds

YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its guidance specifies 128 Kbps for stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio at 48 kHz. Include audio, protocol overhead, bitrate variation, and any other traffic when planning the host’s outgoing network capacity; the video bitrate alone is not a total-bandwidth specification. Check sustained upload over the actual route and test the stream before leaving it unattended.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. Use the ingest address and stream name/key shown in YouTube’s stream setup, and keep the key private. Do not put a stream key in a public configuration example, screenshot, or article comment.

How to size a host without guessing at a hardware minimum

The sources reviewed do not publish a minimum number of vCPUs, RAM, disk, network-interface speed, or instance family for one 1080p relay. Host selection should follow the real workload rather than an assumed “1080p server” specification.

  1. Confirm the source format. Check whether the loop file or upstream feed already matches the intended YouTube codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe cadence. If it does, test a relay-only path first.
  2. Measure the relay under the actual feed. Observe CPU, memory, outgoing throughput, dropped frames, and disconnect/reconnect behavior while the real source and output path are running. Check for competing traffic or other jobs on the host.
  3. Benchmark any FFmpeg conversion. Run the exact FFmpeg command, encoder, preset, and target output you plan to use. Test the intended number of simultaneous streams; results for one output do not establish capacity for several.
  4. Size added roles separately. If the machine records locally or creates HLS/DASH output, determine retention, segment behavior, storage needs, and delivery bandwidth for the actual audience. Those requirements are not covered by the YouTube ingest bitrate alone.
  5. Validate end to end and monitor. Confirm the stream appears correctly in YouTube, watch the platform’s stream health and the host’s resource use, and test recovery after a disconnect. YouTube recommends testing before a stream and monitoring its health. No fixed 24/7 soak-test duration is established in the cited guidance, so set one appropriate to your own risk and operations rather than treating an arbitrary duration as a YouTube requirement.

Choose a compatible NGINX RTMP deployment

Stock NGINX should not be assumed to include RTMP support. NGINX’s official RTMP documentation gives dynamic-module installation instructions for NGINX Plus packages; its technical specifications describe RTMP/DASH streaming as provided by a third-party RTMP module. The arut project separately documents building its module with NGINX. These are distinct installation routes, not interchangeable instructions for every distribution.

Common sizing and stream failures

  • The stream starts, then buffers or drops frames. Check sustained outbound capacity on the complete route, including audio, protocol overhead, bitrate variation, and unrelated traffic. Compare YouTube stream health with host network and process metrics.
  • CPU is unexpectedly high. Verify whether FFmpeg is transcoding, whether an unintended conversion is active, and whether multiple outputs are being encoded. A relay and a transcode are different workloads; benchmark the exact conversion settings rather than applying a generic 1080p CPU estimate.
  • YouTube reports a stream-health problem. Check the output codec and frame rate, use the applicable bitrate guidance, verify CBR and keyframe cadence, and confirm the audio format. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds.
  • The relay cannot connect to YouTube. Confirm the ingest address and private stream key from YouTube’s setup, then check that the chosen module/build supports the intended RTMP or RTMPS path. Do not expose the key while troubleshooting.
  • It works in a manual test but stops unattended. Check process supervision, host connectivity, and what happens after the source or upstream connection drops. Exercise reconnect and recovery behavior in an end-to-end test; a successful initial connection does not prove unattended recovery.
  • The NGINX configuration accepts no RTMP directives. Check that an RTMP module is actually installed and loaded for the exact NGINX package. Instructions for an NGINX Plus dynamic module do not automatically apply to an open-source distribution or a differently packaged build.

DIY hosting costs versus a managed cloud loop

For self-hosting, the relevant cost is the always-on machine and its network use, plus any storage, FFmpeg compute, operations, and recovery work your setup needs. The sources here establish no provider, machine size, or price that would make one VPS or dedicated host universally cheapest. Compare options against measured resource use for your own source, output, and any extra roles.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud, so your computer, OBS, and home connection do not have to stay on. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed.
