Nginx RTMP YouTube Stream Disconnects After a Few Hours: How to Diagnose and Fix It

A multi-hour YouTube stream drop has no universal timeout fix. Find the failing connection first, then check relay reconnect behavior and YouTube’s encoder guidance.

There is no single NGINX timeout value that fixes every YouTube stream that disconnects after a few hours. First identify which connection fails: the encoder to NGINX, NGINX’s push to YouTube, or YouTube’s ingest session. Match timestamped logs from each side with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, then change only the setting relevant to the failing leg.

Identify the connection path before changing settings

Start by writing down how the stream reaches YouTube. The encoder may publish directly to YouTube, or it may publish to an NGINX RTMP application that relays the stream onward. Those paths have different connections to diagnose.

  • Record the exact NGINX and nginx-rtmp-module versions in use.
  • Note the encoder’s destination and whether NGINX pushes onward to YouTube.
  • Keep stream keys private. Redact them from shared logs, screenshots, configuration examples, and support requests.

Find which leg disconnects first

At the time of the drop, compare the encoder log, NGINX RTMP error log, host or service logs, and YouTube’s stream-health messages in Live Control Room. Use timestamps to establish the sequence rather than assuming that the last visible error names the root cause.

  • If the encoder stops publishing to NGINX, investigate the encoder-to-relay connection and the source-side logs.
  • If the encoder continues publishing but the YouTube-facing session drops, inspect NGINX’s relay push and YouTube’s ingest status.
  • If the source and relay appear connected but YouTube reports an ingest problem, use the stream-health message and encoder output to guide the next check.

The symptom alone does not establish which component failed. Preserve the logs around the disconnect so a later configuration change can be assessed against the same evidence.

Check NGINX reconnect behavior if it pushes to YouTube

For a relay topology, verify that the installed nginx-rtmp-module supports the push-reconnect directive you intend to use and that it is placed in the correct RTMP application context. The directive reference and issue discussion describe module-specific behavior; they are not proof that one example setting applies to every build or configuration. Check the version actually installed before adapting a configuration.

Do not use HTTP keepalive as an RTMP fix

NGINX’s keepalive_timeout belongs to the HTTP module and controls HTTP client keep-alive connections. It does not reconnect an RTMP publishing session. NGINX stream TCP keepalive options are also distinct: they are socket-level probes, not RTMP ping behavior or relay reconnect logic. Choose a mechanism that matches the connection that actually failed.

Validate encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance

Encoder settings can contribute to an unhealthy ingest session, so verify them even if they do not explain a drop after a particular number of hours. YouTube recommends RTMPS for Live where supported, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe frequency of two seconds; it says the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a multi-hour disconnect will stop.

  1. Check that the encoder is using the correct YouTube stream destination and stream key, without exposing the key in logs you share.
  2. Use RTMPS if your encoder and setup support it. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP in its RTMPS guidance.
  3. Set rate control to CBR and verify the keyframe frequency against YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.
  4. Test with representative audio and motion, then monitor stream health in Live Control Room.

Make one change at a time and verify the result

  1. Save the current configuration and retain logs from the encoder, NGINX, host or service, and YouTube stream health.
  2. Record the stream start time, disconnect time, which leg appears to have failed, and the exact configuration change.
  3. Change one relevant setting, rather than adjusting several timeouts or reconnect options together.
  4. Run an extended stream and compare its logs and health messages with the previous run. Treat a setting as a fix only after the deployment has been observed to remain stable.

Common troubleshooting mistakes

  • Changing keepalive_timeout: this is for HTTP client connections, not RTMP publishing. Diagnose the failing RTMP leg instead.
  • Copying a reconnect directive from an unrelated example: module support and configuration context vary. Confirm your installed version and directive reference.
  • Treating TCP keepalive as reconnect: a socket probe is not the same as RTMP ping or a relay’s ability to reconnect its push.
  • Assuming YouTube caused the drop because it is the destination: correlate YouTube health messages with encoder and NGINX logs before assigning cause.
  • Changing multiple values at once: this makes it difficult to learn which change affected the outcome. Preserve a baseline and test one change at a time.
  • Sharing an unredacted configuration or log: remove stream keys and other credentials before posting them publicly.

When to investigate the relay host or network

If logs point to relay capacity or connectivity, assess sustained upload capacity, network stability, CPU and memory headroom for the actual workload, the network route to the selected YouTube ingest, observability, and recovery behavior. A few-hour disconnect by itself does not establish resource exhaustion, nor does it justify buying a particular server or networking product. Gather measurements first.
