If SRS can accept your incoming stream but YouTube shows no stream, the failure is usually on a different hop: SRS’s outbound publishing configuration, the YouTube RTMPS URL or key, or the TLS/network connection to YouTube. First establish where the stream stops, then fix that specific leg; a working encoder-to-SRS connection alone does not prove YouTube publishing works.
Trace the stream and find the failing hop
Separate the path into three parts: encoder to SRS, SRS process and forwarding configuration, and the publisher’s outbound connection to YouTube. Record the exact error and check whether the stream is visible at each stage before changing settings.
- Check the encoder-to-SRS leg. Confirm the encoder is publishing to the intended SRS address and that SRS receives the stream. SRS’s v7 RTMP documentation shows a local RTMP publishing example. That example demonstrates ingress; it does not automatically configure forwarding to YouTube.
- Check SRS itself. Verify the SRS process is running, inspect its logs, and find the configuration or client responsible for publishing to YouTube. Confirm its destination, credentials, and outbound errors. The older SRS v3 project wiki illustrates checking process status and following
./objs/srs.log; paths and commands may differ in your installed version. - Check YouTube Live Control Room. Look for the stream’s incoming preview or status and note whether YouTube reports an encoder-start, connection, or stream-health problem.
Keep the exact SRS log lines, encoder error, YouTube status, installed SRS version, and encoder name and version together. SRS setup and YouTube egress vary, and the available documentation does not provide one cross-version error-code chart that identifies every failure.
Refresh the YouTube RTMPS URL and stream key
In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the URL for the specific live stream and use its RTMPS form where appropriate. YouTube says the ordinary RTMP URL may appear by default; reveal the RTMPS URL as described in its RTMPS encryption instructions. Then update the publisher responsible for the YouTube leg with that URL and the current key for the same stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check for a stale URL or key, a key copied from another event, or a changed value that was not updated in SRS or its publishing client.
- If an encoder-start error persists, YouTube recommends getting a new stream key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder. Update the actual YouTube publisher, which may be a forwarder rather than the local encoder.
- Treat the key as a credential. Do not put it in public logs, screenshots, or support posts. If it has been exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update the publisher.
Fix RTMPS, TLS, port, and SNI errors
For YouTube RTMPS, inspect the full destination, not just the key. The protocol must be rtmps, the ingestion hostname and application path must be valid, and the connection must use port 443. Google’s RTMPS delivery guide explains that the hostname is needed for authentication through Server Name Indication (SNI) during the TLS handshake.
- SSL certificate error: Confirm that both protocol and server use
rtmps, and try port 443 if the error persists, as YouTube’s RTMPS instructions advise. Verify that the client is making a TLS connection rather than sending cleartext RTMP. - Connection timeout: Check that the destination URL and port are correct and that the client is not sending cleartext RTMP to an RTMPS endpoint. If those values are right, examine TLS diagnostics and whether the client sends the correct SNI hostname. Google notes that a timeout can result from sending cleartext RTMP to an RTMPS endpoint.
- SRS TLS setup: SRS has separate RTMPS configuration and certificate/key settings. Do not mistake an RTMPS listener between your encoder and SRS for the separate TLS connection from SRS to YouTube. Each leg has its own endpoint and TLS role.
Confirm your SRS version and the actual client or forwarding mechanism before applying configuration examples. SRS’s v7 RTMP documentation describes RTMP and RTMPS configuration, but a local listener’s settings do not replace YouTube’s remote endpoint requirements.

Check encoder compatibility and stream health
If YouTube receives a connection but the stream will not start or its audio or video is poor, check the encoder or publisher rather than repeatedly changing the destination URL.
- Confirm the software supports RTMPS and update it to its latest available version. YouTube says a built-in RTMPS preset may be available.
- Inspect the encoder preview, reported errors, CPU load, and a local recording or archive. These checks help distinguish an encoding or media problem from a network problem.
- If the local stream looks healthy but transmission fails or degrades, test outbound Internet connectivity from the machine or server that publishes to YouTube. YouTube recommends this check but does not give one universal upload-bandwidth threshold for this specific failure.
- Record which publisher and version are involved. SRS documentation identifies FFmpeg and OBS as RTMP publishers, but that does not establish identical RTMPS or codec behavior across clients.
Match the symptom to the likely fault domain
| Observed symptom | Check first |
|---|---|
| Encoder-start error, rejected ingest, or no YouTube stream | Current stream-specific YouTube URL and key; confirm the actual outbound publisher is using them. |
| SSL certificate error | rtmps protocol and server, port 443, TLS behavior, hostname, and SNI. |
| Connection timeout | Endpoint and port, cleartext-versus-TLS mismatch, SNI, then outbound connectivity. |
| Encoder reaches SRS, but YouTube does not | SRS process and logs, plus the separate configured SRS-to-YouTube forwarding or publishing leg. |
| Stream connects but media is poor or unstable | Encoder version, preview, errors, CPU load, local recording, and outbound network health. |
Use viewer reports only after YouTube receives the stream
If YouTube is receiving the stream and viewers report playback problems, compare where the reports come from. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide distinguishes one viewer, multiple viewers on one network, and viewers on different networks: a single viewer or shared-network problem points toward that viewer or network, while reports across different networks may indicate the encoder or stream. This viewer-side comparison does not diagnose a failed SRS-to-YouTube connection.
