Neither Nginx nor Apache is universally better. Choose Nginx when an event-driven server suits your static-file, TLS-termination or reverse-proxy role; choose Apache HTTP Server when you need .htaccess or Apache-specific modules. If your application needs both sets of strengths, running Nginx in front of Apache is a common pattern—but it adds another service to configure and maintain.
How to choose between Nginx and Apache
Start with the constraints of the application you already run, not a generic ranking of server speed. The decisive questions are whether the application relies on per-directory .htaccess rules, whether it needs Apache-specific modules, what role the server will perform, and which configuration model your team can operate reliably.

For a game studio, community site or mod database, the same decision applies as for any website: identify the application requirements first. A busy patch-download page may make static-file handling an important consideration; a legacy application that expects directory-level Apache rules may make compatibility the overriding concern. Those examples do not prove one server will be faster for a particular workload.

Nginx: asynchronous, event-driven handling
Nginx uses an asynchronous, event-driven model. That architecture is a reason it is commonly selected for serving static files and handling roles such as TLS termination and reverse proxying. It is not, by itself, proof that Nginx will outperform Apache for every application, configuration or hardware budget.

Apache: a threaded event MPM is available
Apache is not accurately described by the old shorthand that it always uses one process per connection. Its event MPM is a variant of the worker MPM: a control process launches child processes, and each child creates a fixed number of server threads plus a listener thread that hands connections to worker threads. The event MPM was built to address the keep-alive problem and is the default MPM on platforms that support it.
That qualification matters when comparing Nginx with Apache. Results depend on the Apache MPM and configuration being tested; treating every Apache deployment as the older prefork model can produce a misleading comparison. Apache also requires APR and APR-Util, with minimum version 1.5.x; some features need 1.6.x.

Does Apache support .htaccess, and does Nginx?
Apache supports .htaccess per-directory configuration. Nginx does not read or apply .htaccess files. If an application depends on them—for example, to define rewrite, access or other server behavior—moving it to Nginx is not a matter of copying those files. The equivalent behavior must be handled through Nginx’s central configuration or another part of the application stack.
This is often the practical deciding factor for an existing site. Before switching, inventory the application’s directory-level rules and Apache module dependencies. If the rules are undocumented or managed by a hosting control panel, confirm how they are represented and maintained in the target setup. Do not assume the site will behave identically just because its pages load after a basic migration.

Which server is faster in 2026?
There is no reliable universal winner established by the available 2026 benchmark evidence. Third-party blog posts have claimed nearly 45% faster average response time under heavy load, two to five times as many concurrent connections as Apache prefork at equivalent RAM, and two to three times faster static-file serving. These figures vary by source and test setup and are not reproducible from the evidence available here. No official Apache or Nginx 2026 benchmark was located.
In particular, a comparison with Apache prefork should not be treated as a comparison with every Apache configuration: Apache’s event MPM is a threaded variant of worker and is the default MPM on supported platforms. Benchmark headlines also do not establish how a real application behaves with its own code, caching, storage, network and traffic pattern.

How to make a meaningful decision for your workload
- Check compatibility first. Identify
.htaccessrules, Apache-specific modules and application requirements. Resolve those before weighing speed claims. - Define the server’s role. Decide whether it will serve static files, terminate TLS, proxy requests, serve application content, or perform several of those jobs.
- Compare equivalent configurations. If performance is important, test the Apache MPM and Nginx configuration you would actually deploy, rather than comparing against a vaguely defined or outdated setup.
- Use your own application and traffic pattern. Measure the outcomes that matter to your site under a representative workload. Third-party percentages are not a substitute for that test.
- Include operational effort in the decision. Account for configuration, deployment, troubleshooting and the knowledge your team already has. A theoretical performance advantage is not useful if the resulting setup is harder to run safely.
Which is better for WordPress?
There is no single answer for every WordPress installation. If your current WordPress environment relies on Apache .htaccess behavior, Apache is the more direct fit unless you deliberately replace that behavior elsewhere. Nginx can be considered when you can manage the required behavior centrally and your hosting setup supports it; it does not interpret the site’s .htaccess file.

If the WordPress site is behind Nginx and Apache, establish which server is responsible for each behavior instead of assuming that both layers apply the same rules. The two-server pattern can preserve Apache compatibility while using Nginx for edge duties, but it adds configuration and operational complexity.

For Apache’s current version, use the Apache project’s own release announcement rather than older third-party listings: some comparison pages and a GitHub mirror summary still list 2.4.68. Nginx release information should likewise be checked against the project’s news page. These version details are current to October 14, 2026; check the project release pages again when choosing or upgrading a production deployment.
Is Nginx more popular than Apache?
A secondhand figure attributed to W3Techs via tech-insider.org for April 2026 reports Nginx on 32.8% and Apache on 23.7% of websites with a known web server. Because the figures are reported secondhand here, they should not be treated as independently verified market-share measurements. Popularity can describe adoption, but it does not settle whether a server fits your application’s compatibility and operating requirements.
When does a two-server setup make sense?
A common arrangement puts Nginx in front of Apache: Nginx handles TLS and static files, while Apache handles dynamic content. This can be attractive when an existing application needs Apache behavior but the deployment also wants Nginx in the front-facing role. It is not automatically the best option: two layers mean more configuration and more places to diagnose routing or behavior problems.
Use this design only when the responsibilities are clear. Decide which server terminates TLS, which serves static assets, where application requests go, and which layer owns each rule. If one server can meet the requirements with less operational complexity, the extra layer may not be justified.
