Leg pads, a chest-and-arm protector, blocker and catching glove do different jobs; no single fit is right for every goalie. NHL rules are specific to the league, so youth and recreational players should also check their own league’s requirements and seek goalie-specific fitting help.
What does each piece of goalie equipment do?
Leg pads
Leg pads protect the lower legs and knees while presenting a broad surface for blocking shots. Their shape and strapping influence how they sit on the legs, rotate as the goalie moves, and meet the ice to close gaps.
Modern pads use high-density foam and lighter strapping than older leather-and-buckle designs. NHL.com reported in 2023 that pads may weigh around or under five pounds each; that is an approximate figure from reporting, not a league-wide measured statistic. NHL.com: “Unmasked: Evolution of leg pads has increased performance”.
Pad-face construction and foam choices can affect rebounds. Some designs aim to keep rebounds softer and closer, while faster rebounds can travel farther from attackers near the crease, giving the goalie more time to reposition. Neither behavior is universally best; it depends on a goalie’s preferences and how they play.

Chest and arm protector
This protector covers the torso, shoulders and arms. Rule 11.3 of the NHL’s 2022-23 Official Rules says it must be “anatomically proportional and size specific based on the individual physical characteristics of that goalkeeper.” The rule’s wording makes individual proportion central to the NHL requirement; it is not a one-size-fits-all prescription. NHL Official Rules, 2022-23, Section 3, Rule 11.3.
Blocker and catching glove
The blocker goes on the stick hand and provides a protective surface for blocking pucks. The catching glove goes on the other hand and is used to catch or control them. They are separate pieces with different functions.

Helmet or mask, skates, stick and pelvic protection
- Helmet or mask: protects the head and face.
- Skates: support the goalie’s stance and movement on the ice.
- Stick: helps block shots and play pucks.
- Pelvic protection: guards a vulnerable area.
These roles are general descriptions, not a sizing guide. The cited material does not establish current goalie-specific fit standards for helmets, skates or sticks. NHL.com’s 2017 reporting described some goalies using double-cup pelvic protection and others adding layers; those were individual practices reported at the time, not a universal current rule. NHL.com: goalie protection evolves with the game.
How should goalie pads fit?
A useful fit objective is for the pads to stay in a consistent position, rotate when needed and seal against the ice without compromising comfort or protection. The right feel varies: some goalies prefer a looser setup that allows the pad to rotate and land flat, while others want a tighter, more connected feel. Strapping affects that balance, so a setup that works for one goalie is not automatically right for another.

For general beginner checks, the NHL’s Ready to Play guidance says to align the center of the shoulders with the shoulder-pad caps, tighten elbow-pad straps so the pads do not move, check that shin pads cover the knee and shin, and check helmet approval in the guide’s context. These are general-player pointers, not a full goalie-fitting procedure. NHL Ready to Play equipment guidance.
Why do goalie pads look so different from player pads?
Goalie pads are designed to cover the legs and knees and create a broad blocking surface; player equipment is not built around that same role. In goalie pads, the materials and face design can also influence how rebounds behave, while the strapping affects how the pad moves with the goalie. NHL.com’s 2023 feature captures how much the equipment has changed over time: Los Angeles Kings director of goaltending Bill Ranford said, “Equipment companies are evolving and coming up with some unbelievable changes from my time.” That is a historical observation, not a technical specification.

What NHL equipment rules can you rely on?
The available detailed NHL rule text is the 2022-23 Official Rules. Its Rule 11.3 specifies that the chest-and-arm protector must be anatomically proportional and size-specific. The league’s September 2018 explanation of a rule change described the aim as preserving protection while removing material that did not have a body part behind it. NHL.com: explanation of goalie-equipment rule changes.
Those sources do not establish exact dimensional limits for the 2026-27 season. Do not treat older measurements as current NHL limits: check the applicable season’s official rulebook for current league requirements. Players outside the NHL should follow the rules for their own league and age group, and get help from someone experienced in fitting goalie equipment.
