A strong qualifying position can shape a racer’s first matchup and lane choice, but only wins in eliminations advance a racer through the bracket.
What is the difference between qualifying and eliminations in NHRA?
Qualifying consists of timed passes used to establish the elimination field and its positions. Eliminations are two-vehicle contests: the loser is out, and the winner advances until one racer remains. NHRA’s NHRA 101 explainer describes an event as “a series of such two-vehicle, tournament-style eliminations.”
That distinction matters: the quickest qualifier does not automatically win the event. Qualifying affects where a racer starts in the ladder; results in each elimination round determine who keeps racing.
How does an NHRA qualifying pass work?
Each lane is timed independently in a standing-start race over a measured distance. NHRA defines elapsed time (E.T.) as the time from leaving the staging beams to reaching the finish line. Before the start, the racers roll into position at the beams; as NHRA puts it, “When the racer rolls into the stage beam, the front tires are exactly on the starting line.”

The Christmas Tree signals the start. Its staging lights show when vehicles are in position, and the starter activates the sequence once both are staged. NHRA explains that Pro Tree and Sportsman Tree sequences differ; qualifying and elimination races use the same basic start-and-timing idea, though the bracket outcome matters only in eliminations.
How are NHRA elimination pairings determined?
NHRA’s 2026 elimination-bracket guide illustrates a 16-car professional field. In its first round, the highest qualifier faces the lowest, the second-highest faces the second-lowest, and so on:

These pairings are the guide’s 16-car example, not a claim that every NHRA category uses the same field size or ladder.
Who chooses the lane?
In the guide’s 16-car example, the higher qualifiers (Nos. 1–8) choose lanes in round one. In later rounds, lane choice goes to the racer with the quicker elapsed time in the previous round.

What happens after a foul start?
NHRA’s glossary says a racer who foul-starts in eliminations is eliminated unless the opponent commits a worse infraction.
Do all NHRA categories qualify and eliminate on the same days?
No. The schedule depends on the event and category, and qualifying and eliminations can be interleaved across the weekend. The 2026 In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals event guide is one specific example: it lists sportsman qualifying and time trials and Top Alcohol qualifying on Thursday; more professional qualifying and sportsman eliminations on Friday; and additional professional qualifying plus eliminations for several categories on Saturday. Mission Foods Series eliminations begin Sunday at 11:00 a.m. in that event guide.

That schedule is for the 2026 Finals, not a template for every NHRA weekend. Check the current event schedule for the category and date you want to see. NHRA notes that weather can delay, postpone, or reschedule an event. The same guide says ticket sales are final and refunds are not issued.
