Try these eight steps in order
1. Check the game version and internet connection
Square Enix’s general crash guidance says to make sure you have internet access and the latest version of the game. Connect to the internet, then check Steam for an available update to NieR: Automata. This is a basic first check, not a diagnosis of why the game is crashing. Square Enix support guidance
2. Update your graphics driver
Square Enix recommends updating your graphics driver. Get the appropriate driver through your graphics-card manufacturer’s official update channel. The support guidance does not prescribe a particular driver version or a third-party driver utility.
3. Restart the PC
Restart Windows, then try launching the game again. Square Enix includes a restart among its general first-line troubleshooting steps.

4. Verify the game files in Steam
For a crash, startup failure, or black screen, Square Enix’s NieR: Automata FAQ recommends validating the installation. In Steam, open your Library, right-click NieR: Automata, choose Properties, and open the local-files or installed-files section to verify the integrity of the game files. 5. Check the PC against the listed requirements
Steam’s listing gives the following minimum and recommended specifications. They are the game’s published requirements, not a guarantee that a computer meeting them will be free of crashes.

These specifications are from Steam’s listing accessed in 2026. The same listing says Steam Client support has been limited to Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024; that is a Steam platform policy and should not be confused with the game’s separately listed Windows requirements. 6. Temporarily take unofficial mods out of the test
If you installed unofficial mods, temporarily remove them from the launch path and try the game without them. This is an isolation step, not a proven fix. For example, the Special K project includes a NieR: Automata FAR plugin, but that fact does not establish that the plugin causes crashes. Keep track of changes so you can restore your setup, and do not delete your save files as part of this test. Special K project

7. Reinstall only if simpler checks fail
If the game still crashes after the earlier checks, Square Enix’s general guidance suggests reinstalling it. Allow for the download and installation process, and make sure you have enough available storage before starting.
8. Contact Square Enix support with diagnostic reports

One historical graphics compatibility note
Square Enix’s support index mentions a specific issue involving Radeon RX 400-series graphics cards, Windows 10, and Crimson ReLive Edition 17.2.1.
