nierinterface.dll is a National Instruments component used by NI Error Reporting, not a standard Windows DLL. When Windows reports that nierinterface.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the NI application or LabVIEW runtime that is trying to load it rather than downloading the file separately.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, note:
- Which program fails: LabVIEW, a LabVIEW-built executable, NI MAX, an NI-VISA application, or hardware software installed with an NI driver.
- When it fails: at Windows sign-in, when launching the program, after a driver update, or after installing or removing NI software.
- The exact message: a missing-file message points in a different direction from an entry-point error or Windows error 127.
- Application architecture: determine whether the failing application is 32-bit or 64-bit. A 32-bit LabVIEW application needs the 32-bit NI runtime even on 64-bit Windows.
- Recent changes: check whether a LabVIEW, VISA, NI System Configuration, or driver installation was interrupted or rolled back.
NI Error Reporting collects crash and internal-warning reports for NI software. Its related background process is nierserver.exe. The application named in the error is usually the important clue: nierinterface.dll may simply be the shared component that the application could not load.

Fix 1: Repair the NI product that produced the error
This is the safest first repair for a missing or damaged file.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair with NI Package Manager
For NI Package Manager 19.5 or later:
- Close LabVIEW, NI MAX, and every NI application.
- Open the Start menu and launch NI Package Manager.
- Select Installed.
- Find the affected National Instruments product.
- Select the product and choose Repair.
- Allow the repair to complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the same application that originally displayed the error.
If the repair completes successfully, the application should start without the missing-file message. If the product is not listed, or Repair is unavailable, use the product’s original installer or the official NI installer for the same product and release.
#1 Best Overall
Older NI Package Manager versions may require removing and reinstalling the affected package. Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11 or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10. Select the National Instruments product, choose Uninstall, then reinstall it from the original NI media or official NI download.
Repair an older MSI installation
Some older NI products use a traditional Windows installer:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Find the relevant National Instruments product.
- Right-click it and choose Repair, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not repair an unrelated Microsoft or Windows component simply because its name appears near the DLL error. Identify the NI product first.

A LabVIEW-built executable requires a compatible LabVIEW Run-Time Engine. Installing a newer runtime at random is not a reliable solution, especially for older applications.
For LabVIEW 2016 and earlier, an executable generally requires the same LabVIEW runtime generation used to build it. Newer LabVIEW releases can support limited forward compatibility only when the application was built for it. Several major runtime versions and 32-bit and 64-bit variants can coexist.
Identify the required runtime
Look for one of these clues:
- The application’s installer or shortcut documentation may state the LabVIEW version.
- The error may explicitly mention a required runtime, such as LabVIEW 2016.
- The application’s developer may identify the runtime version.
- An installed program name may include LabVIEW Run-Time Engine followed by a release and architecture.
Then install the matching runtime through the official National Instruments installer, NI Package Manager, or the application’s own installer. NI applications often include the required runtime as part of their installation package.
Match the architecture
Do not use the Windows architecture as the only guide:
- A 32-bit application requires the 32-bit LabVIEW runtime.
- A 64-bit application requires the 64-bit LabVIEW runtime.
- A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows and still require 32-bit NI components.
If the error says that an entry point such as nier_setApplicationCallback2 could not be located, or reports Windows error 127, suspect a mismatched or incomplete runtime installation. Repair or reinstall the exact runtime required by the application, including the correct bitness.

- Lightweight, bus-powered design ensures portability & easy integration for on-the-go data acquisition applications.
After installing it, restart Windows and launch the affected program again. If the missing-file message changes to an entry-point error, the file may now exist but the application is loading an incompatible NI component. Remove conflicting partial installations through NI Package Manager and reinstall the matching product as a complete package.
Fix 3: Repair NI System Configuration, NI MAX, or a driver package
nierinterface.dll can be involved in software installed alongside NI System Configuration and hardware drivers. This is especially relevant when the error appears in:
- NI Measurement & Automation Explorer, also called NI MAX
- NI System Configuration API calls
- NI-VISA applications
- DAQ, PXI, or other NI hardware software
- A LabVIEW application that communicates with hardware
If the error appeared after a VISA or driver update failed, do not copy a replacement DLL into a system folder. Repair the failed NI installation instead.

- Close NI MAX, LabVIEW, and the hardware application.
- Open NI Package Manager.
- Select Installed.
- Locate the relevant driver or NI System Configuration package.
- Choose Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Test NI MAX or the hardware application.
If the required component is not installed, reinstall the matching NI driver bundle. Some NI System Configuration components are delivered through driver packages such as NI-DAQmx or PXI Platform Services. Select only the driver family required by the hardware and application.
If repair does not work, uninstall the affected NI package from NI Package Manager, restart Windows, and install it again from the original or official NI installer. Avoid removing every NI product at once unless the installation is severely damaged and you have confirmed which applications and drivers must be restored.
Fix 4: Update or reinstall the NI and hardware drivers
A broken driver installation can leave shared NI components incomplete. This is more likely when the error began immediately after a failed hardware, VISA, or NI driver update.
First use the relevant NI installer or NI Package Manager package. Windows Device Manager is useful for checking the hardware layer:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for an error status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
- Use the matching NI installer to repair or reinstall the driver.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not use Device Manager’s generic driver search as a substitute for the NI package when the missing file belongs to NI software. Device Manager may report that the hardware driver is current while the associated NI runtime or configuration component is still damaged.

Manually hunting through several hardware packages and guessing which driver is stale can be slow, especially on a system with multiple NI products. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, with repairs and driver installation handled by its full version; reinstalling the matching NI package remains the definitive fix for this NI DLL.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and installation history
Security software can quarantine a DLL immediately after an installation or update. This is a possibility, not proof that nierinterface.dll is malware.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the failed NI installation or its program directory.
- If the file was quarantined, record the detection details.
- Do not restore a file downloaded from an unknown source.
- Repair or reinstall the NI product from its official installer.
If your organization manages antivirus software, ask the administrator to review its event logs. Do not create a broad exclusion for System32, SysWOW64, or an entire drive. If a legitimate NI installation is repeatedly blocked, use the vendor’s documented application path and security policy to create a narrowly scoped exception.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components if several programs fail
Because nierinterface.dll belongs to National Instruments, Windows component repair is not the primary fix. Use it when several unrelated applications show DLL, bad-image, or system-component errors.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repair the NI application again if the error remains.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. These commands repair Windows components; they do not install the NI runtime or identify the correct LabVIEW version.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows problems and show what needs attention, while repair actions are handled by its full version; for this file, reinstalling the affected National Instruments product is still the definitive repair.

System Restore is reasonable when the failure started immediately after an interrupted VISA, driver, or NI software update and a restore point exists from before that change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the failed installation.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point and select Finish.
- Sign in after Windows restarts.
- Test the NI application.
System Restore does not replace a correct LabVIEW runtime installation. If the error remains, repair or reinstall the matching NI package.
Do not use these common DLL fixes
Do not download nierinterface.dll from a DLL website
A standalone download can contain the wrong version, wrong architecture, missing dependencies, or tampered code. It also leaves the underlying NI installation incomplete. Do not copy the file into System32, SysWOW64, the LabVIEW folder, or the application folder unless the official NI installer specifically places it there.
Use the original NI installer, NI Package Manager, or the installer supplied by the developer of the LabVIEW application.

Do not install Visual C++ as the primary fix
Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable installs Microsoft C and C++ runtime libraries. It does not install the National Instruments nierinterface.dll component. Install it only when the failing application separately reports a missing Microsoft runtime.
Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
regsvr32 is for self-registering COM or ActiveX libraries that provide a registration entry point. A shared NI interface DLL is not normally repaired by registration. Running a command such as:
regsvr32 nierinterface.dll
can produce a registration-entry-point error and does not restore a missing LabVIEW runtime.
FAQ
Is nierinterface.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with National Instruments software and NI Error Reporting. It may be present on a Windows system because LabVIEW or another NI package installed it, but that does not make it a Windows component.
Which programs install it?
LabVIEW Development System and the LabVIEW Run-Time Engine install it. NI software and driver bundles can also install shared components needed by LabVIEW, NI MAX, NI System Configuration, or hardware applications.
What does “nierInterface.dll is missing” mean?
It means the application could not locate or load a required NI component. The cause may be an incomplete installation, corruption, a blocked file, a wrong runtime version, or wrong 32-bit/64-bit architecture. The message alone cannot distinguish these causes.
What does Windows error 127 mean here?
Error 127 or an entry-point message usually indicates that Windows found a DLL but it does not contain the function the application expects. Repair or install the matching LabVIEW runtime rather than replacing only the DLL.
Is the 64-bit DLL required on 64-bit Windows?
Not necessarily. A 32-bit LabVIEW application requires the 32-bit runtime even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Should I reinstall the latest LabVIEW runtime?
Not blindly. Match the runtime to the LabVIEW version and architecture required by the application. Older LabVIEW applications may need their original runtime generation.
