Nightingale’s Offline Mode is no longer merely in the works: Inflexion Games announced it in February 2024 and launched it in May 2024. It gives players a solo option that runs on their own device, but it does not support multiplayer or account-linked features such as Twitch Drops. The game can still attempt a Steam sign-in at startup; Inflexion documents ways to skip that check when playing offline.

Why Inflexion added Offline Mode

Nightingale launched in Early Access in February 2024 as an online game, including for solo players. Inflexion said it had prioritized co-op and the technical challenge of supporting players across interconnected Realms. After launch, the studio acknowledged that it had misjudged what some players wanted and made offline play a priority.

In its February 2024 developer update, Inflexion said: “We’ve seen a lot of discussion in recent days around our decision to make Nightingale online-only at our Early Access release.” The announcement followed an open stress test earlier that month involving over 48,000 players, which Inflexion and publisher Level Infinite described as a test of multiplayer server capacity—not a count of people complaining about the online requirement.

What Offline Mode includes—and what it does not

At launch in May 2024, the Nightingale Team described the mode as a first version, intended for single-player use with base-game content. It also said players could pause the game and that Vaults had been adjusted for solo play. Multiplayer and account-connected features, including Twitch Drops, were not available offline.

#1 Best Overall
Castle Nightingale Board Game
  • STEALTH VS. VIGILANCE: Three nimble ninja infiltrators face off against a lone samurai guardian in a tense, asymmetric strategy game of hidden movement, deception, and sharp observation.
  • IMMERSIVE MODULAR CASTLE: Features 4 double-sided boards and a garden tile, allowing players to create multiple castle layouts for high replayability and shifting tactical challenges.
  • TACTICAL ACTION SYSTEM: Includes 20 action cards that drive player decisions, encouraging creative infiltration, clever patrol routes, dynamic cat-and-mouse gameplay, and unexpected twists.
  • HIGH-QUALITY GAME COMPONENTS: Comes with 4 detailed miniatures (3 ninja + 1 samurai), equipment tokens, trap door tiles, vase tokens, footprint discs, helper sheets, and a game turn board for smooth, thematic play.
  • SEARCH FOR TREASURE… OR STOP THE THIEVES: Ninja players attempt to locate the fabled treasure hidden within Castle Nightingale, while the samurai uses sound, deduction, and vigilance to track and capture intruders before it’s too late.

In September 2024, Inflexion clarified that Offline Mode has equivalent in-game content to Online Mode and receives updates at the same time. That later clarification is more informative than the launch announcement’s “first version” wording: it describes the mode’s content and update parity, while multiplayer and connected rewards remain online-only.

Online Mode and Offline Mode compared

Area Online Mode Offline Mode
Connection Connects to Inflexion’s online service. Runs on the player’s device without connecting to Inflexion’s servers, according to Inflexion.
Play style Supports multiplayer. Single-player only.
Account-linked features Supports account-connected features such as Twitch Drops. Twitch Drops cannot be redeemed offline.
Where the work runs Uses the online environment. Uses more of the player’s local computing resources; settings may need adjustment for the individual PC.
Save recovery and rollback Inflexion says it has server-side troubleshooting tools. Inflexion cannot roll back local files and recommends occasional backups of offline characters.

Why does Offline Mode ask you to sign in?

Inflexion says the default startup flow tries to sign in through Steam so the game can access Online Mode. That attempt does not mean the game must connect to Inflexion’s servers to run offline, but it can make the startup experience confusing if your connection is unavailable or unreliable.

  • When the Steam sign-in check appears, cancel it to enter Offline Mode.
  • Set Steam to “Go Offline” before starting the game to skip the sign-in check.

To return to Online Mode, Steam needs to be online. Inflexion’s May 2024 announcement said, “With the introduction of Offline Mode, you’re no longer tethered to an internet connection.” Read that as a description of offline play after the startup check—not a guarantee that the default launch flow never attempts a Steam connection.

What Inflexion announced about online play in 2025

On July 14, 2025, Inflexion announced plans to move away from its own hosted online infrastructure. The studio said its internal data showed that many players used the hosted environment solo, while only a small fraction played in groups of five or six; it published no exact counts or percentages for either group.

Inflexion said players would still be able to play together through dedicated servers and named GPortal as a hosting provider. It also said online characters and Realms would remain hosted by Inflexion for the foreseeable future so players could download them, then continue solo, join a friend, or host a game. Those were the studio’s plans as announced in July 2025; they do not, by themselves, establish the present availability or terms of any service.
