The reveal announcement on Steam Community frames the premise around taking contracts, fighting through the night, gathering supplies and keeping a train moving, either alone or with a crew. A report on the announced playtest also describes cargo runs, scavenging, defending the train and escaping before daylight.
Is NightRunner purely PvE?
Yes. The developer’s Steam Community Q&A answers “Yes” to “Is NightRunner purely PvE?” The sources describe no player-versus-player mode.

Can I play NightRunner solo or offline?
Yes. The developer Q&A says, “Yes, you can play NightRunner in single-player and offline.” It also says the default lobby is four players, so the announced format accommodates solo play as well as a four-player crew.
Is NightRunner an extraction shooter?
The Steam listing includes extraction mechanics, but the available official description presents them as one part of a broader mix that also includes horde survival, dungeon exploration and tower defense. It does not establish that NightRunner is a conventional extraction shooter or detail the consequences of death, what can be lost on a failed run, or how extraction works.

When can you play NightRunner?
A first playtest was announced for Saturday, October 3, 2026, in a report published October 1, 2026. That date has passed. The available sources do not confirm whether the test is still open or whether another way to access it is available. Steam currently lists the full release date as to be announced and says the game is not yet available.
