Ninja Gaiden 4 starts with Hero, Normal, and Hard. Hero includes optional combat assists, and you can change difficulty as you progress through the story. To unlock the top setting, Master Ninja, clear Story Mode once. Purgatory and Death Wish add challenge, but neither is the Master Ninja unlock requirement.
Which difficulties are available at the start?
Hero, Normal, and Hard are the three initial choices. The available sources do not publish a complete numerical comparison of enemy health, damage, or other tuning between these settings, so there is no reliable stat-by-stat table to give.
| Setting | When available | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Hero | At the start | Optional combat assists are available. |
| Normal | At the start | A starting difficulty; detailed numerical tuning is not stated in the cited sources. |
| Hard | At the start | A starting difficulty; detailed numerical tuning is not stated in the cited sources. |
| Master Ninja | After clearing Story Mode once | The highest difficulty, with tougher enemy pressure and more aggressive behavior, as described by Xbox Wire Japan. |
What does Hero difficulty do?
Hero is designed to make the combat more approachable through optional assists, including Auto Evade, Auto Block, and Auto Assist. Xbox Wire also describes Auto Heal and Auto Movement among the available aids. These options let you keep assistance that suits you rather than treating Hero as a single fixed set of settings. Team NINJA describes the game as offering “adjustable difficulty settings” on its official system page.
How do you unlock Master Ninja?
- Complete Story Mode once on a difficulty available to you.
- After the clear, select Master Ninja from the available difficulty options.
Xbox Wire says Master Ninja increases pressure by bringing stronger enemies into earlier chapters, placing more enemies at checkpoints, and making enemies more aggressive. The source does not provide numerical multipliers for these changes.

Can you change difficulty during the story?
Yes. Xbox Wire says you can switch difficulty while progressing through the story and adjust which assists are active. The cited guide does not specify the current menu path, so use the in-game settings rather than relying on an unverified sequence of menu labels.
What are Purgatory and Death Wish?
Purgatory: optional chapter trials
Purgatory gates sit off the main path in story chapters and lead to waves of enemies. These optional gauntlets offer a way to take on extra pressure during the campaign; they are not required to unlock Master Ninja, and their enemies are not necessarily the same as those in that difficulty. Xbox Wire says you can sacrifice some of your maximum health for greater rewards. Its named “Realm of Hell” option requires sacrificing 75% of maximum health.
