Xbox has not announced that Ninja Theory has closed. On September 22, 2026, it said two agreements for the studio had fallen through and that it would consult employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other options. By October 5, reports based on employee posts said staff were announcing redundancies or departures, but no verified total or completed shutdown had been established.
Is Ninja Theory closing?
Not yet, based on the available official statement. Xbox said it would begin consulting employees about a proposed closure, not that the studio had shut down. It also said it was continuing to explore other paths forward. The distinction matters: consultation is an announced process, while a completed closure would be a separate outcome that Xbox has not confirmed.
In its September 22 Xbox Wire update, the company said: “Unfortunately, two separate agreements for Ninja Theory fell through. We will now begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward.”
Have Ninja Theory layoffs started?
On October 5, VGC and GamesBeat reported that Ninja Theory employees were posting about redundancies or departures. These are reports based on staff statements and journalist reporting; they do not establish a verified studio-wide redundancy total or prove that every role is affected. The cited reporting also does not confirm that the consultation has concluded.

What happens to Senua?
Xbox announced Senua in June 2026 as Ninja Theory’s next game, described as following Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, with a 2027 target. That announcement came before the September closure consultation and October staff reports. Neither the June announcement nor the later statements confirms whether development is continuing, delayed, cancelled, or otherwise changing.

Xbox’s June 7 interview about Senua set out the project and its target. The subsequent September update does not provide a new status for the game, so its 2027 target should be understood as the date announced in June—not a confirmed current release plan.

Xbox has said that two separate agreements for Ninja Theory fell through, but has not identified the prospective buyers or explained why either agreement failed. In a July 6 reset update, Xbox said Ninja Theory had entered terms to join new ownership, with funding intended to complete and grow Senua. The September announcement then reported that the two agreements had fallen through; the statements do not supply more detail on the change.

The July context appears in Xbox’s July 6 update. It also referred to a proposed new ownership arrangement for Undead Labs, but that separate matter does not establish what will happen to Ninja Theory.
