Ninja Theory’s future is unresolved. On September 22, 2026, Xbox said two agreements for the Cambridge studio had fallen through and that it would begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other options. By October 5, employees had posted that they had lost jobs or were at risk, PC Gamer reported—but consultation is not confirmation that every affected person has been dismissed.
What is happening to Ninja Theory?
Xbox has proposed closing Ninja Theory, but has not announced a final closure. In a September 22 employee update, Xbox COO Matt Booty said: “Unfortunately, two separate agreements for Ninja Theory fell through.” He added: “We will now begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward.” Xbox’s update therefore describes a proposal and an ongoing process, not a completed shutdown.
The distinction matters: consultation gives employees a chance to be heard before a decision is finalized. The latest official position in the available updates leaves open the possibility of another path for the studio.
Why are Ninja Theory staff leaving?
The immediate backdrop is Xbox’s wider restructuring and the collapse of its planned ownership arrangements for Ninja Theory. On July 6, 2026, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma told employees the company expected to reduce its workforce by approximately 3,200 roles across FY27, including approximately 1,600 role eliminations immediately. She also said four studios would leave Xbox for new management. Ninja Theory was then described as having entered terms to join new ownership, with funding to complete and grow Senua. That was a plan, not a completed transfer. Sharma’s July message

By September 22, Booty said both separate agreements for Ninja Theory had fallen through. Xbox’s September update also announced 268 further eliminations across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. That number is not a Ninja Theory-specific layoff count. Xbox’s September update
What have employees said?
On October 5, PC Gamer reported that multiple Ninja Theory employees had posted on LinkedIn that they had lost jobs or were at risk. The report quoted gameplay programmer Katrin Mair’s farewell: “It’s incredibly sad knowing that we won’t get to finish what we were working on,” she wrote, adding that “so much care, talent and effort went into it.” PC Gamer’s October 5 report

Those posts are evidence of individual employees’ circumstances, not a verified total of staff dismissed. PC Gamer noted that UK consultation is required before actual layoffs, so the process does not establish that every affected employee has already been let go.

Ninja Theory is the Cambridge studio behind Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, as well as DmC: Devil May Cry and Heavenly Sword, according to the studio’s official page. Xbox’s July plan had specifically described funding to complete and grow Senua; after the agreements fell through, the studio’s proposed closure puts its future work in question. The available statements do not establish what will happen to any particular project.
