Yes. As of August 16, 2026, Nintendo still allows owners to redownload previously purchased Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games, DLC, and existing software updates. That access is available only “for the foreseeable future,” not guaranteed permanently. You can no longer buy new eShop content, redeem download codes, or use most online play features.
The shutdowns happened at different times: eShop sales ended on March 27, 2023; Nintendo Network online play and most other internet-dependent software features ended on April 8, 2024.

The 2023 closure stopped sales; it did not immediately erase the ability to retrieve past purchases. Nintendo’s current support information says purchased games, DLC, and existing updates remain available to redownload for the foreseeable future. Nintendo has not given a final cutoff date.
What can you still download?

Nintendo’s North American Q&A distinguishes existing purchases and updates from demos, free-to-start software, new purchases, and codes. A free item is not necessarily recoverable: previously owned paid content and new access to free software are different cases.

How to redownload a purchased game
Nintendo 3DS and 2DS
- Connect the system to the internet and open Nintendo eShop.
- Open Menu, then choose Settings/Other.
- Select Redownloadable Software, choose the game or DLC, and follow the on-screen prompts.
Nintendo’s 3DS transfer and redownload guide documents this menu path. The item must be associated with the Nintendo Network ID and purchase history available to that system.
Wii U
- Connect the Wii U to the internet and open Nintendo eShop.
- Open the account, menu, or purchase-history area and choose the option for previously purchased or redownloadable software.
- Select the game or DLC and start the download, with enough storage space available.
Wii U menu wording can differ by region and system software, so use the console’s purchase-history or redownload option rather than relying on one universal button sequence.

If a title is missing or the download fails
- Check that the console is online and that you are using the Nintendo Network ID tied to the purchase.
- Confirm there is enough free space on internal storage or the SD card, then restart and retry.
- Check whether the item was purchased. A demo or free-to-start title may not be recoverable.
- Some DLC may need to be downloaded from within its game rather than the main eShop list.
- Do not erase a working installation just to test whether redownload works. If the console is damaged, contact Nintendo support before formatting it or attempting a system transfer.
What still works without Nintendo Network?
Offline play and physical games
Single-player modes and other features that do not require online communication can still work, depending on the game. A title may launch offline while losing online-only modes, events, rankings, matchmaking, or data distribution. Physical cartridges and discs can still be played if they and the console work, but a used copy does not restore online services or guarantee access to a needed update or DLC.
Local wireless, StreetPass, and SpotPass
Local wireless multiplayer and 3DS Download Play can continue where a game supports them; they are not the same as internet multiplayer. Nintendo says StreetPass remains available because it uses local communication. SpotPass features that depend on internet communication no longer work.

What if you delete a game, lose an SD card, or replace the console?
Redownloading an installation is separate from recovering save data. A replacement download does not, by itself, restore a save stored on the console, SD card, cartridge, or another location. If an SD card fails, the games may be retrievable from purchase history while saves may not be.
System transfers and purchase access have platform-specific restrictions. Keep the console and Nintendo Network ID credentials intact, avoid unnecessary formatting, and preserve save data using the options available for the particular game and system. Do not assume that a Wii U or 3DS purchase transfers as a license to Nintendo Switch.
Owners of digital-only titles should check the redownload list and download essential purchases while Nintendo still provides the service. This is especially important before a card or console fails; the company has not promised indefinite redownload access.

Nintendo says Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter remained usable after the general online-services shutdown, but warns that they may end in the future. This is a limited exception, not a restoration of online battles, trades, rankings, or every other Pokémon feature that relied on Nintendo Network. Check Nintendo’s service announcement for its current qualification.

What happened to old eShop balances?
For North American users, Nintendo’s documented deadline to link a Nintendo Network ID with a Nintendo Account and merge the eShop balances was March 11, 2024. Anyone who missed it can no longer use or merge the remaining funds. Nintendo Australia presented the deadline as March 12, 2024, reflecting the regional timing; see its regional eShop notice. The old wallet process was not a transfer of game ownership to Switch.
Can community servers restore online play?
Community-run replacement services may imitate selected network features, but they are not Nintendo services and do not restore official eShop sales or redownload infrastructure. Coverage varies by game, and projects may require console modifications or custom software. Nintendo warns that unofficial services imitating Wii U network features are unsupported and may create unexpected security risks in its online-services announcement. Consider privacy, account, compatibility, legality, and data-loss risks before using one; do not assume every title or feature is supported.
