Nintendo 3DS Emulators on the iPhone: What Happened to Folium and What You Can Use Now

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Yes—Nintendo 3DS emulation reached Apple’s App Store, but the headline “now available” refers to a June 2024 milestone, not a new 2026 release. Folium was reported as the first App Store app to support Nintendo 3DS games on iPhone. It remains listed in the U.S. App Store, while Manic EMU is now another App Store option that advertises 3DS support.

Neither app includes Nintendo’s commercial games. You need to provide your own legally obtained game data and any required system files, and performance varies significantly by iPhone or iPad, game, emulator core, and graphics settings.

What the original announcement meant

Folium is a paid, multi-system emulator developed by Jarrod Norwell. Its appearance on Apple’s App Store in June 2024 was significant because it was reported as the first App Store listing to support Nintendo 3DS games on an iPhone. The app also supports other handheld systems, including Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS.

The wording matters: Folium was not a Nintendo 3DS game store and did not make Nintendo’s software available for download. It is an emulator application. Folium’s App Store description says that users must supply their own games and system files.

Nintendo is not affiliated with Folium. The end of new Nintendo 3DS eShop purchases also does not represent Nintendo’s endorsement of third-party emulation. Nintendo stopped new purchases through the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShops on March 27, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Previously purchased games and downloadable content could still be redownloaded for the foreseeable future, according to Nintendo’s support information, but new purchases and free-content downloads were no longer available.

Is Folium still available on iPhone?

In the United States, Folium remains listed on the App Store. The current listing identifies these basic requirements and details:

Item Current listing information
Price $2.99
Devices iPhone and iPad
Minimum software iOS 16 or iPadOS 16
Age rating 4+
Advertised systems Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, and other systems

App Store pricing and availability can differ by country and can change after publication, so readers should check the listing in their own region before buying. The $2.99 price above is the U.S. listing information supplied for this article.

Folium’s 3DS features and updates

Folium has continued to receive updates since the original launch. Its listed changes include support for installing 3DS game update files, up to 4× upscaling for certain emulator cores, improved Metal rendering, support for newer iPhone models, and changes to how Cytrus system files are handled.

More recent listing information also mentions core updates, changes to game and system-file importing, improved error handling, and a fix for a Cytrus-related device reboot issue. Those updates support describing Folium as actively maintained. They do not establish that every 3DS game runs correctly or at full speed.

Compatibility is not a single yes-or-no feature. A game can behave differently depending on:

  • the iPhone or iPad model and its chip;
  • the iOS or iPadOS version;
  • the game itself;
  • the selected emulator core;
  • resolution, upscaling, and other graphics settings;
  • the game’s use of cameras, microphones, motion controls, online functions, or other 3DS hardware; and
  • the quality and format of the user-supplied game and system files.

Folium’s listing specifically warns that emulation may be slow on older devices. It is therefore inaccurate to promise universal full-speed performance or to claim that a particular game works perfectly without independent testing on that exact device and title.

Manic EMU is another current App Store option

Folium is no longer the only App Store application advertising Nintendo 3DS support. Manic EMU is a separate app listed for iPhone and iPad. Its App Store metadata describes it as free to download with in-app purchases and advertises 3DS support through Azahar and Citra-based cores.

The Manic EMU listing mentions a broader feature set, including:

  • 3DS data import from real hardware through Artic Base;
  • Pretendo network configuration;
  • fast-forward support for its Citra core;
  • AirPlay mirroring;
  • amiibo support;
  • camera functionality;
  • save import and export; and
  • configurable 3DS graphics options.

These are capabilities claimed in the developer’s App Store metadata, not independent performance results. They should be treated as advertised features rather than a guarantee that every feature works with every game, device, or operating-system version.

Folium versus Manic EMU

Folium Manic EMU
Availability Currently listed in the U.S. App Store Currently listed in the App Store
Pricing model Paid app; U.S. listing shows $2.99 Free download with in-app purchases

Other listed features Multi-system emulation, importing, Metal improvements, upscaling, and game-update installation Features such as save import/export, AirPlay, camera and amiibo support, graphics options, and network configuration
Evidence level Features and updates come from App Store listing information Features come from developer App Store metadata

There is no universal winner based solely on the store descriptions. Folium may appeal to someone who wants a paid app with a relatively focused multi-system presentation. Manic EMU may appeal to someone who wants to try a free download and is interested in its advertised integrations and configuration options. Check current pricing, in-app purchases, regional availability, and compatibility before making a decision.

What you need to set up 3DS emulation on iOS

A typical setup requires four things:

  1. A compatible iPhone or iPad. Folium requires iOS 16 or iPadOS 16 according to its current U.S. listing. Manic EMU has its own current requirements, which should be checked separately.
  2. An emulator app. Folium and Manic EMU are examples currently advertising 3DS support on Apple’s platform.
  3. Your own legally obtained game data. The emulator does not supply commercial Nintendo games.
  4. Any required system files. Folium’s listing says these must also be supplied by the user.

Because the apps and their cores handle importing differently, there is no single installation sequence that applies to every title. Follow the selected app’s current on-screen import instructions, and keep backup copies of personal saves before moving or converting files.

Legal and copyright boundaries

Apple’s current App Review Guidelines include section 4.7, which covers mini apps, streaming games, plug-ins, and game emulators. The guidelines allow retro game console and PC emulator apps to offer game downloads, while placing responsibilities on developers concerning the software offered, applicable laws, privacy, age controls, and other requirements.

That policy explains how emulator apps can appear in the App Store. It does not make every download of a copyrighted game lawful. App Store availability is not permission to download commercial ROMs, system files, encryption keys, or other copyrighted material from unauthorized repositories.

The safest wording is also the most accurate: use games and system files that you are legally entitled to use, follow the law where you live, and do not treat an emulator listing as Nintendo authorization. This article does not provide piracy sources or instructions for bypassing access controls.

Performance: what to expect

3DS emulation is more demanding than running a simple retro-console title. An iPhone that handles older systems comfortably may still show slowdown, graphical errors, excessive heat, battery drain, or inconsistent frame pacing with some 3DS games.

Older devices are the clearest risk because Folium explicitly warns that emulation may be slow on them. Newer hardware can improve the odds of a good experience, but neither a newer iPhone nor a higher graphics setting guarantees flawless results. The app’s listed 4× upscaling support applies only to certain cores and should be viewed as an image-quality option, not a performance guarantee.

If a game performs poorly, the practical troubleshooting order is:

  1. Confirm that the iPhone or iPad meets the app’s operating-system requirement.
  2. Update the emulator and iOS or iPadOS where appropriate.
  3. Try the game at native or lower internal resolution before enabling high upscaling.
  4. Test another supported core if the app provides one.
  5. Close demanding background apps and avoid judging performance while the device is overheating.
  6. Check whether the problem is game-specific rather than assuming that all 3DS emulation is failing.
  7. Back up saves before changing imported files, cores, or major settings.

These steps can reduce avoidable load, but they cannot fix every game-specific compatibility problem. A controller also cannot increase emulation speed; it only improves physical input.

Controls: touchscreen or physical controller?

Both apps can be used with on-screen controls, but touchscreen buttons are not ideal for every 3DS game. Action games, racing games, fighting games, and titles that depend heavily on analog input are usually more comfortable with physical controls.

Folium’s App Store listing names support for several controller families, including:

The listing does not guarantee identical behavior across every controller, iPhone or iPad, iOS version, game, connection method, or emulator core. Confirm compatibility for the specific setup before buying an accessory.

If you want a purpose-built option, a Backbone One iPhone controller is a natural accessory to consider because Folium explicitly lists Backbone One among its supported controllers. It is optional, does not solve performance limitations, and is not made by or endorsed by Folium.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A general iPhone-compatible controller is also worth considering if you already own a compatible Bluetooth or console controller. The important checks are device fit, connection method, button mapping, and whether the emulator recognizes the controller as expected.

Who should try Folium?

Folium is most compelling for an iPhone or iPad owner who:

  • already has legally obtained game data and required system files;
  • wants a straightforward App Store installation rather than a sideloading process;
  • accepts that compatibility will vary by title and hardware;
  • is comfortable paying the current store price; and
  • wants support for multiple Nintendo and other handheld systems in one app.

It is a poorer fit if you expect the app to include games, need guaranteed full-speed performance for a particular title, use an older device, or want every 3DS feature—including cameras, motion controls, online services, or special accessories—to work identically to original hardware.

What the headline gets right—and wrong

The original story got the important historical point right: Apple’s App Store became home to a Nintendo 3DS-capable emulator, and Folium was reported as the first such listing in June 2024.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is now outdated is the implication that this is a brand-new or exclusive development. Folium remains available in the U.S. App Store, but Manic EMU also advertises 3DS support. The current story is therefore about the growing availability of App Store-based 3DS emulation—not a single newly released app that has just appeared.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Nintendo 3DS emulation officially supported by Nintendo?

No. The App Store availability of Folium or Manic EMU does not indicate Nintendo endorsement. Folium’s listing says that it is not affiliated with Nintendo.

Do Folium and Manic EMU include Nintendo 3DS games?

No. Users must provide their own game data, and Folium also says that required system files must be supplied by the user. Do not download copyrighted games or system files from unauthorized sources.

Does 3DS emulation work on every iPhone?

No. Folium requires iOS 16 or iPadOS 16, and performance depends on the device, game, emulator core, and graphics settings. The listing warns that emulation may be slow on older devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a controller with Folium?

Folium lists support for Backbone One, Joy-Con, Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, DualShock 4, DualSense, and Xbox Series S and X controllers. Compatibility may vary by device, operating-system version, game, core, and connection method.

The Bottom Line

Folium’s App Store arrival was a genuine June 2024 milestone, but it is now better understood as one of several iOS options for Nintendo 3DS emulation. Folium remains listed in the U.S. App Store, and Manic EMU also advertises 3DS support. Whichever app you choose, bring legally obtained game and system files, check device compatibility, and expect results to vary rather than assuming every game will run at full speed.
