Nintendo’s September 2026 Zelda 40th Anniversary presentation announced a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2—not a confirmed new game set in the “Wilds era.” Nintendo lists the remake for November 5 and says it will feature overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, and reworked camera and movement controls.
What Nintendo actually announced
The official announcement is for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Link’s 1998 adventure, remade for a new platform. Nintendo’s 40th Anniversary Direct page and announcement details identify the game as a Nintendo Switch 2 release and list November 5 as its availability date. The material does not confirm a new sequel or another entry in a “Wilds era.”

“Wilds era” and “new Zelda experience” are phrases appearing in fan discussion, not Nintendo’s official description of the announced game. The distinction matters: the confirmed reveal is a remake of a named 1998 game, rather than evidence of a new story following the recent open-world entries.
What is changing in the remake
Nintendo says the remake will bring several substantial updates to the original adventure:
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
- Overhauled visuals
- Fully voiced cutscenes and expanded character dialogue
- Symphonic orchestral music
- Reworked camera and movement controls
Nintendo describes it as a rebirth of Link’s milestone 1998 adventure for a new era. The announcement does not establish performance details, a price, or how the revised controls feel in play, so those are not yet useful grounds for comparison with the original.
Platform, release date, and physical packaging
Nintendo identifies Nintendo Switch 2 as the platform and November 5 as the availability date on its official announcement page. The announcement also says the first print run of the physical version will come in special packaging with textured foil cover art, available while supplies last. It does not specify retailer pricing, regional stock, or whether the packaging will be offered in every market.

Why this may be confused with a new Zelda reveal
The anniversary presentation arrives as fans discuss the series’ broader future, which can make a remake sound like a new-era sequel in headlines or conversation. But the official details describe a return to Ocarina of Time, with changes to presentation and controls; they do not announce a newly titled Wilds-era game. Nintendo says the Zelda series began in Japan in 1986, marking four decades of the franchise in 2026. Its company-wide release also reports more than 6.1 billion video games and over 870 million hardware units sold globally, figures for Nintendo as a whole—not Zelda sales.
