It sued James C. Williams, known online as “Archbox,” then obtained permission to subpoena Reddit and seven other services for information relevant to that case and possible additional defendants. The court’s December 13, 2024 order authorized limited early discovery; it did not declare every subreddit member a piracy defendant.
The short version
- Named defendant: James C. Williams, whom Nintendo associated with the online name “Archbox.”
- Complaint filed: June 28, 2024, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. Federal case docket
- Reddit’s role: A third-party service from which Nintendo sought information, not the defendant in the underlying lawsuit.
- Discovery order: December 13, 2024, covering eight providers.
- Later damages request: Nintendo reportedly asked for $4.5 million and injunctive relief in default proceedings; that report does not, by itself, establish a final award. Nintendo Life report
What Nintendo actually did
Nintendo’s complaint alleged that Williams operated or promoted online “Pirate Shops” distributing unauthorized Nintendo Switch games and related access. It also alleged that he used the Archbox identity in piracy-related communities, including as a leading moderator of r/SwitchPirates. The complaint says Williams authored more than 3,900 posts in that community. Those are allegations in Nintendo’s filing, not findings after a contested trial. Read the complaint
The claims described in the complaint included copyright infringement, circumvention of technological measures, trafficking in circumvention devices, breach of contract and tortious interference. “Pirate Shops” in this case refers to the alleged commercial distribution or facilitation of unauthorized copies. A discussion of homebrew, a modified console, Linux, an emulator or game backups is not automatically the same conduct.

Why Reddit was subpoenaed
Because Williams did not participate, Nintendo said it needed information from companies that might connect online identities, domains, code, communications and infrastructure. The order named Namecheap, Tucows, GoDaddy, Cloudflare, GitHub, Discord, Google and Reddit. Court decision summary

For Reddit, the potential categories included:
- Identifying account holders behind particular pseudonymous accounts;
- Linking accounts to Williams or to one another;
- Locating communications or activity relevant to the alleged storefronts;
- Identifying possible associates; and
- Gathering information relevant to damages or the scope of requested injunctions.
A subpoena is a legally enforceable demand for information. It is not a finding that Reddit, an account holder or a subpoena recipient committed infringement.
Why “Nintendo targeted 200,000 Reddit users” is misleading
Contemporary coverage described r/SwitchPirates as having approximately 190,000–200,000 members. That number describes the size of a community, not the number of defendants or subpoena targets. TorrentFreak’s report

- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
The available court materials support a narrower account: Nintendo pursued information connected to Williams, alleged co-participants, the alleged Pirate Shops, damages and potential additional defendants. They do not establish a demand for the private data of every subreddit member, nor do they show that Nintendo sued the entire membership.
Was Nintendo suing Reddit?
No. Williams was the defendant. Reddit was one of several third-party providers receiving legal process in the discovery effort. Case docket

What this does—and does not—say about modding and emulation
Commercial distribution
Nintendo’s emphasis was on alleged businesses or services supplying unauthorized game copies, keys or access. That is different from merely reading a forum, moderating a community or discussing console modification.

Modding and homebrew
A modified Switch or a homebrew application may be relevant to Nintendo’s broader anti-circumvention concerns, but the existence of a modded device does not by itself prove that its owner distributed copyrighted games.
Emulation and game files
Emulation technology and the distribution of copyrighted ROM or game files are technically and legally distinct questions. This case should not be generalized into a claim that Nintendo sued everyone who uses an emulator.

What default proceedings mean
Williams’ failure to respond allowed Nintendo to pursue default-related relief without a conventional defended trial. A default proceeding can result in enforceable damages or an injunction, but it is procedurally different from a jury-tested verdict. The complaint’s allegations should therefore remain attributed to Nintendo unless a later order expressly establishes them.
In 2025 reporting, Nintendo sought $4.5 million in damages against Williams. The available report establishes a request, not necessarily a final judgment or a confirmed payment. Nintendo Life
Could this end Switch piracy?
Not literally. Subpoenas and related litigation can still be useful against identifiable commercial operators.
- Potential benefits: They can link pseudonyms across services, preserve evidence, disrupt domains and hosting, expose payment or communications connections, and deter operators who depend on stable infrastructure.
- Limits: Data may be deleted, encrypted, held under false identities or stored outside the United States. One person can use many accounts, and identifying an account holder does not prove which actions that person took.
- Network effect: Public enforcement may push communities or storefronts to new services rather than eliminate unauthorized copying.
That makes the strategy better understood as targeted disruption and evidence gathering, not a guaranteed end to piracy.
What Reddit users should understand
- A Reddit username is pseudonymous, not necessarily anonymous.
- Depending on the account and retention period, a platform may hold metadata, email addresses, IP-related records, payment information or other account data.
- A limited subpoena can focus on particular accounts or communications rather than an entire subreddit.
- If you receive a subpoena, preservation notice or other legal communication, consult a qualified attorney. Do not delete evidence or attempt to evade legal process.
Bottom line
Nintendo’s action reached Reddit, but the evidence supports a focused discovery effort in a lawsuit against one named defendant and possible associates—not a class action against 200,000 subreddit members. The case targeted alleged commercial piracy operations and used third-party records to build a default-judgment and identification strategy. It may disrupt particular networks, but it cannot by itself make Switch piracy disappear.
