What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Short answer: Nintendo Switch 2 is the current Nintendo console for playing compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Compatibility is checked per title, so Nintendo’s issue lists matter for games that have startup, control, accessory, or feature problems. The original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED do not natively run Wii U, 3DS, Wii, or other older-platform software. For Wii discs and Wii downloadable software, Wii U’s Wii Mode remains the documented Nintendo route. Nintendo Switch Online adds selected NES, Game Boy, and SNES games through a subscription library; it does not make the Switch compatible with your original cartridges or discs.
Backward compatibility by Nintendo console
“Backward compatibility” can mean several different things: inserting an old disc or cartridge, downloading a previous purchase, running a re-release, or accessing a curated subscription library. Nintendo’s consoles do not treat those as interchangeable. This table shows what each current or relevant system actually supports.

What Nintendo Switch 2 can play
Physical Nintendo Switch games
Nintendo’s compatibility guidance says: “In addition to Nintendo Switch 2 games, Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released on the Nintendo Switch system.” In practical terms, a Switch game card is the right starting point for Switch 2, but the word compatible is important. Nintendo tests games individually and publishes lists for titles that do not start correctly or have known problems.

Before buying Switch 2 for one particular game, look up that game in Nintendo’s current compatibility information. A game can launch yet still have a problem with a mode, a peripheral, a save feature, or a control method. Compatibility therefore does not promise that the experience will be identical to playing on the original Switch.

Digital Nintendo Switch games
Switch 2 also supports compatible digital games released for Nintendo Switch. That makes it the modern hardware path for Switch-generation software whether the original release was sold on a card or digitally. However, “digital” does not mean “every title transfers without qualification.” Check the title’s compatibility status and the requirements shown for your Nintendo Account and region before relying on a particular purchase.
A digital game may have Switch 2-specific features, an optional upgrade, or a required accessory. Those are separate questions from whether the base Switch software starts. Treat the compatibility listing as the authority for the exact title rather than assuming that a game’s age or popularity guarantees full support.
What compatibility does not promise
- Identical controls: a game designed around original Joy-Con features, a special controller, motion input, or a camera may behave differently if that hardware is unavailable or supported differently.
- Identical peripherals: instruments, fitness accessories, and other devices can require a specific connection method or an original controller.
- Identical performance or features: resolution, frame-rate behavior, local multiplayer options, online functions, and other features can be title-specific.
- Universal coverage: Nintendo’s issue lists exist because some Switch releases have known compatibility limitations on Switch 2.
What the original Switch family cannot play
Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED
Nintendo’s Switch FAQ is explicit: “The Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch Lite systems do not include backwards compatibility with games from previous Nintendo platforms.” That means these systems do not accept Wii U discs, Wii discs, 3DS cartridges, or other older Nintendo media as native software.
The limitation applies to both physical and digital legacy games. A Wii U or 3DS purchase cannot simply be transferred into a playable Switch version. When an older game appears on Switch, it is generally a separate port, remake, or curated release made for Switch, not the original platform version being read directly by the console.
Why a cartridge or disc cannot be used as a license shortcut
Switch game cards are a different format from 3DS cartridges, and Switch hardware has no Wii or Wii U optical-disc drive. Even when a game exists on both generations, the newer release is packaged and licensed as its own software. Owning the older physical copy does not by itself create a Switch download.
The same distinction applies to digital ownership. Nintendo’s support wording describes the Switch as “an all-new way to play” that does not include backward compatibility with digital or physical games designed for older consoles. A re-release may preserve the game, but it is still a new Switch product or service entry.
Wii U: the Nintendo system for most Wii software
Wii discs
Wii U includes Wii Mode. Nintendo’s Wii U hardware guidance says: “Enter Wii Mode from the Wii U Menu to enjoy all kinds of Wii software* – you can play Wii Game Discs, WiiWare and Virtual Console titles from Wii…” This makes Wii U the documented Nintendo route when your priority is playing an existing Wii disc.

The asterisk matters. Nintendo says most Wii software, leaving room for exceptions involving a particular title, controller, accessory, or feature. A disc can therefore be readable while a game’s complete control scheme or peripheral support still requires checking.
WiiWare and Wii Virtual Console
Wii Mode also covers WiiWare and Wii Virtual Console titles. These are Wii-era downloadable products, not the same as Switch Online’s classic catalog. If you already rely on a specific Wii download, verify that the title and the account or system setup you intend to use are supported; do not assume that a modern Switch listing is an automatic replacement.
Controllers and accessories
Wii software often depends on motion controls, the Wii Balance Board, instruments, or other hardware. Wii U’s ability to run the software does not remove those requirements. Keep the original compatible controller or accessory available, and check whether the game expects a Wii Remote, a sensor arrangement, or another device before choosing Wii U as your solution.
Nintendo Switch Online is a reissue library, not media compatibility
Nintendo Switch Online provides selected classic NES, Game Boy, and SNES games, along with online play and save-data features. The games are delivered through the service’s software catalog, using licensed emulation or reissued versions. Your original cartridge is not inserted into the Switch, and your original disc is not read by it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis distinction answers a common question: subscribing does not turn a Switch into a universal legacy console. You can play a classic game only when Nintendo has included that title in the applicable library for your region and subscription access. Catalog availability can change, and a game being available through the service does not mean that every game from its platform is included.
Switch Online can be the most convenient way to play selected classics on modern hardware, but it serves a different goal from preserving original hardware behavior. If you need an obscure cartridge, a peripheral-dependent game, or the exact original release, a subscription catalog may not satisfy that requirement.
Do old Nintendo eShop purchases transfer?
Wii U and 3DS purchases
There is no blanket conversion that turns Wii U or 3DS eShop purchases into playable Switch software. Nintendo’s Switch compatibility guidance treats older-platform digital games as separate from Switch releases. If a game has been ported, remade, or added to Switch Online, that availability is determined by the new release or service catalog, not by an automatic transfer of the old purchase.

Switch purchases on Switch 2
Switch 2 is designed to run compatible digital Switch games, so it is the relevant system for continuing with Switch-generation software. The exact process can depend on the title, account, region, and any Switch 2 edition or upgrade. Check Nintendo’s title-specific compatibility information and the purchase or redownload instructions shown for your account instead of assuming that every digital product has identical treatment.
Choose the right Nintendo system for your goal
| Your goal | Best-supported Nintendo path | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|
| Play a Switch game you already own on a newer console | Switch 2 | Whether the physical or digital title is listed as compatible and whether it has control or accessory issues |
| Play a Wii disc you still have | Wii U in Wii Mode | Whether the title is among the supported “most” Wii games and which Wii controller or accessory it needs |
| Play selected NES, Game Boy, or SNES games casually | Nintendo Switch Online | Whether the specific game is in the catalog available to your region and subscription |
| Play a Wii U or 3DS game you bought digitally | The original Wii U or 3DS, unless a separate modern release exists | Whether Nintendo released a port, remake, or subscription version; there is no automatic Switch conversion |
| Preserve original media and hardware behavior | The original console, or Wii U for supported Wii software | Controller, accessory, display, account, and service requirements for that exact title |
How to check a game before buying hardware
- Identify the original platform and format. Write down whether the game is a Switch card, Switch download, Wii disc, WiiWare title, Wii Virtual Console release, 3DS cartridge, or Wii U download. Do not group all “old Nintendo games” together.
- Match the platform to the console. Use Switch 2 for compatible Switch software, Wii U Wii Mode for most Wii software, and Nintendo Switch Online only for games included in its classic libraries.
- Check Nintendo’s title-specific compatibility information. For Switch 2, look for startup problems, known issues, and any notes about required updates, controllers, accessories, or modes.
- List the game’s hardware dependencies. Motion controls, instruments, cameras, balance boards, special adapters, and local multiplayer setups can change the answer even when the software launches.
- Separate ownership from availability. An older purchase or cartridge may not transfer. Confirm whether the modern option is a new purchase, a subscription entry, or continued use of the original hardware.
- Check your region and edition. Catalogs, editions, and account rules can differ by region. Use the listing that matches the game and Nintendo Account you will actually use.
Common misconceptions, corrected
“Switch 2 plays every Switch game.”
The accurate statement is that Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Switch games. Nintendo’s compatibility and issue lists are part of the answer, especially for a purchase centered on one title.
“A Switch cartridge should work in any Nintendo handheld.”
Switch game cards are designed for Switch-family hardware. A 3DS or Wii U does not become a Switch reader, and a Switch console does not become a reader for 3DS cartridges.
“Switch Online includes all old Nintendo games.”
It includes selected NES, Game Boy, and SNES games. The service is a curated catalog, not a complete archive and not support for your personal cartridges or discs.
“Wii U plays every Wii game perfectly.”
Wii U’s Wii Mode supports most Wii Game Discs, WiiWare, and Wii Virtual Console titles. The qualification covers title exceptions and the controllers, accessories, and features a particular game may require.

Wii U and 3DS purchases do not automatically become Switch versions. A modern release must exist separately, or you need the original platform that supports the purchase.
The practical answer
For Switch-generation games, start with Switch 2 and verify the exact title. For Wii discs and Wii-era downloads, Wii U’s Wii Mode is the documented compatibility route, subject to the game’s hardware requirements. For selected NES, Game Boy, and SNES classics, Nintendo Switch Online is convenient, but it is a reissue service rather than native cartridge or disc support. If your priority is an older Wii U or 3DS purchase, original hardware or a separately released modern version—not a presumed transfer—is the dependable assumption.
