Nintendo confirmed in January 2017 that the game targets 900p when played on a television. Handheld mode targets 720p, and both modes can reduce their internal resolution in demanding scenes through dynamic resolution scaling.
What Nintendo actually confirmed
In January 2017, Nintendo told IGN that the Switch version of Breath of the Wild would run at 900p in TV mode, while the Wii U version would run at 720p. The confirmation was reported by Engadget; it was not a modern technical postmortem or a standalone Nintendo announcement titled around 1080p.
The two releases were presented as fundamentally the same game. Nintendo said both targeted 30 frames per second and contained the same core content, with the Switch version offering the higher docked resolution and higher-quality environmental audio.
That is why the accurate shorthand is “900p on Switch TV mode,” not simply “1080p Zelda.”

Breath of the Wild resolution by mode and version
| Version or mode | Normal reported resolution | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Switch, docked/TV mode | 1600×900 (900p) | Dynamic scaling can lower the internal resolution under load. |
| Switch, handheld mode | 1280×720 (720p) | Dynamic scaling can lower the internal resolution in demanding scenes. |
| Wii U | 1280×720 (720p) | Same broad content and 30fps target as the Switch release. |
| Switch TV output maximum | 1920×1080 | A system output limit, not a guarantee that a game renders internally at 1080p. |
The 900p and 720p comparisons were reported in Digital Foundry’s Switch-versus-Wii U analysis. Nintendo’s original Switch specifications list TV output up to 1920×1080 at 60 Hz and a built-in screen of 1280×720; those figures describe the console’s display capabilities, not the internal resolution of every game.
900p is a target, not a locked resolution
Breath of the Wild uses dynamic resolution scaling. Technical analysis reported that the docked image can fall from approximately 1600×900 to 1440×810 during performance-intensive situations. In handheld mode, the normal 1280×720 image can fall to approximately 1152×648. These measurements come from Digital Foundry’s technical analysis, rather than from a Nintendo specification.
The scaler reduces the number of pixels the graphics processor must produce when the open world, effects, physics or scene complexity become especially demanding. Its purpose is to help the game stay near its 30fps performance target. Consequently, “900p” is the clearest description of the normal docked target, but it does not mean every frame is generated at exactly 1600×900.
Why a 1080p TV signal does not prove native 1080p rendering
Three different resolutions are easy to confuse:
- Internal rendering resolution: the pixel dimensions at which the game creates its frame.
- Console output resolution: the HDMI signal sent by the Switch.
- Display resolution: the physical pixel grid on the television or monitor.
A Switch can send a 1920×1080-compatible HDMI signal even when Breath of the Wild internally rendered a 1600×900 frame. The Switch, television or both can scale that image to fit the display. Selecting 1080p in the Switch’s TV-output settings changes the signal format; it does not turn the game’s internal 900p render into native 1080p.

The same principle applies to a 4K television. It can upscale the original Switch image to its panel resolution, but scaling cannot recreate detail that was never rendered.

What the resolution difference looks like
On a large 1080p or 4K television, 900p can look softer than a native 1080p image. The difference is often more apparent in fine foliage, distant geometry and during camera movement than in ordinary gameplay viewed from a normal sofa distance.
Perceived sharpness also depends on anti-aliasing, reconstruction, lighting, motion, display processing and viewing distance. A dynamic-resolution drop may be easier to notice in a demanding area or while panning the camera. Handheld mode is less vulnerable to obvious softness because the 720p image is shown on the Switch’s smaller 6.2-inch display.
For the original release, a 1080p television is a straightforward match for the console’s output environment. A 4K set remains compatible, but it performs another upscale. Neutral picture settings or Game Mode generally avoid adding artificial halos from excessive sharpening; the best setting depends on the television.
Switch versus Wii U: what changed besides resolution?
The Switch’s docked target is higher than the Wii U’s 720p output, but the platform change was not a wholesale replacement of the game’s visual technology. Comparative testing found broadly similar frame-rate behavior, draw distance, model quality, shadow resolution and texturing, alongside differences in lighting and performance behavior. The Switch release also has higher-quality environmental audio.
Both versions target 30fps and contain the same core adventure. In some demanding situations, Digital Foundry found the portable Switch mode could perform more smoothly than docked mode. Lower handheld resolution reduces GPU workload, but that does not make handheld mode universally superior: it trades image resolution and screen size for potentially steadier performance in particular scenes.

Why 900p instead of 1080p?
Nintendo did not publish a detailed explanation assigning a single cause to the 900p choice. The defensible technical interpretation is that rendering fewer pixels leaves more GPU budget for an enormous open world, streaming, lighting, shadows, effects and physics. Dynamic scaling then provides additional headroom when a scene becomes unusually heavy.
The game was also developed for both Wii U and Switch, which may have limited the extent of platform-specific visual redesign, but that is an inference rather than a stated Nintendo rationale. It should not be recast as an official claim that the Switch was incapable of 1080p games.

No. The 2017 original-Switch version remains a 900p-targeted TV-mode game with a 720p handheld target. Nintendo later released Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition on June 5, 2025. Its official listing promises higher-definition visuals, improved frame rates, HDR support, faster loading and compatibility with the Zelda Notes feature in the Nintendo Switch app: Nintendo’s product page.
The enhanced edition requires Nintendo Switch 2 hardware and is a separate version, not a resolution patch that changed the original Switch release. Nintendo’s listing also says active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can obtain the upgrade pack at no additional cost. The listing does not establish a single exact rendering resolution, so it should not be described as definitively 1080p, 1440p or 4K without additional technical evidence.
Verdict
The original Switch could output a 1080p signal, but Breath of the Wild did not render natively at 1080p. Its normal docked target was 1600×900, handheld mode targeted 1280×720, and dynamic scaling could lower both figures when performance demanded it.
