What changes with the Octopath Switch 2 editions?
Both games arrived on Switch 2 on October 1, 2026. SQUARE ENIX says they have been optimized from their original Switch releases with improved resolution and frame rate. Nintendo’s product listings describe them as digital editions and say neither can be played on the original Switch. Save data is incompatible between the Switch and Switch 2 versions of each game.

Digital editions and the announced physical bundle
Nintendo’s individual product pages are for the digital Switch 2 editions. Separately, SQUARE ENIX announced a physical edition containing both games: “The Physical edition for Nintendo Switch™ 2 will also be available as a bundle.” That announcement establishes a physical bundle, not individual physical Switch 2 copies.

SQUARE ENIX reported that the HD-2D series had shipped and sold more than 6 million copies worldwide in its July 13, 2026 announcement. Nintendo’s 2026 listing for Octopath Traveler 2 says the original Octopath Traveler first released in 2018 and sold over 3 million copies worldwide. These are differently attributed figures: the former is a series total reported by SQUARE ENIX; the latter is for the first game, as stated by Nintendo.
Other Switch 2 retail releases have later dates
