That is a warning about Micron’s memory business—especially high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI systems and DRAM for servers—not a quantified forecast that PC RAM will be unavailable or cost more by a particular amount.
Will RAM shortages get worse in 2027?
According to Ars Technica’s report on Micron’s Q4 FY2026 earnings call, Mehrotra said supply-demand conditions would be tighter in calendar 2027 and 2028 than in 2026. He also said around 75 percent of Micron’s memory output for 2027 was already accounted for. That percentage refers to Micron’s output, not the world’s total RAM supply, and “tighter” describes a relative supply-demand outlook rather than a measured amount of unmet demand.
Mehrotra’s reported comments included: “Overall, supply-demand environment is only getting tighter.” Ars Technica also reported his statement that a large part of Micron’s 2027 HBM volume was already sold out, at prices “much higher than 2026 prices.” Those remarks concern Micron’s sales and pricing outlook, particularly for HBM; they do not give an absolute price or a retail forecast for PC memory. Ars Technica reported the remarks on October 1, 2026.
Why is Micron warning about a RAM shortage?
AI and server demand are central
The reported tightness is closely tied to memory used in AI systems and servers. HBM is a specialized product used alongside high-performance processors, while server DRAM serves data-center systems. Neither should be treated as identical to the memory modules sold for consumer PCs: products, customers, and supply allocations differ.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
New capacity takes time to contribute
Ars Technica’s account describes Micron’s new clean-room capacity as ramping gradually rather than becoming full production immediately, with other supply headwinds also weighing on the outlook. As a result, announced capacity does not necessarily mean an immediate increase in the memory reaching customers.
Most of Micron’s 2027 output was already spoken for
The reported figure that roughly 75 percent of Micron’s 2027 memory output was accounted for illustrates how much of the company’s planned supply had been committed. It is not a measure of global supply, nor does “accounted for” establish that every unit was delivered or that other memory makers had the same order position.

What Micron’s results do—and do not—confirm
Micron announced its fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results on September 30, 2026; the company’s fiscal year ended September 3. Micron reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $133.19 billion and described AI-driven demand as a major contributor to its results. Those company-reported figures provide business context, but they do not independently establish future shortages or retail PC RAM prices. Micron’s results release confirms the date and financial results, not the shortage percentages or the call quotations reported by Ars Technica. Micron’s investor-relations site identifies Mehrotra as chairman, president and CEO and links to the Q4 2026 materials.

It could affect consumer memory indirectly if manufacturers prioritize capacity for higher-demand products or customers, but the cited reporting does not establish a specific PC RAM price increase, retail shortage, or date when availability might change. A forecast for HBM or server DRAM cannot be translated directly into a prediction for desktop DDR5 kits: those are distinct products sold through different channels.

For a PC upgrade, use your motherboard or system maker’s specifications to check the supported memory generation, form factor, capacity limit, and configuration. Treat the outlook as a reason to keep an eye on prices if you already plan an upgrade—not evidence that you need to buy immediately or that a particular kit is scarce. Ars Technica also reports that Micron stopped selling consumer RAM under its Crucial brand, so do not assume Micron’s production commitments correspond to a currently available Crucial retail kit.
