Check the recipient’s Nintendo Account country before buying a Nintendo eShop gift card, then match it to the country or currency the card is intended for. After confirming compatibility, choose from the amounts currently sold by a retailer in that market. There is no single denomination list that applies worldwide.
Which region’s Nintendo eShop card should you buy?
On Nintendo Switch, the eShop country follows the country set on the recipient’s Nintendo Account. Check that setting with the recipient before purchasing, then inspect the card or its listing for the intended country and currency.

Nintendo’s North American support guidance says eShop cards are country-specific and redeemable only on systems or Nintendo Accounts set to that same country. It says the intended country is shown on the back of the card. Nintendo’s North American guidance covers the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
There is a narrower exception in Nintendo’s Spanish and German guidance: cards may be used in countries with the same currency. The examples given include a French card used in Germany or the Netherlands. Treat that as the rule described on those regional support pages—not a guarantee that every card will work in every country sharing its currency. Check Nintendo’s guidance for the market where the card is sold and the card’s own markings.

Can you use a card bought in another country?
Only if the card’s intended region or applicable regional rule matches the recipient’s account. A mismatch can prevent redemption. Nintendo says it cannot exchange a card intended for one country or region for one intended for another. If you already bought the wrong card, contact the retailer about the purchase or give it to someone whose account can redeem it.
Changing the recipient’s account country is not a simple workaround: Nintendo says the eShop balance does not carry over when the country on the Nintendo Account changes. Check Nintendo’s country-change guidance before considering an account-country change.

What amount should you choose?
Pick an amount sold in the recipient’s market that comes reasonably close to the intended purchase price. If a small remainder would be inconvenient, ask the recipient what they plan to buy rather than guessing high. A larger card does not bypass region restrictions.
These Nintendo-listed amounts illustrate how offerings differ by market; they are examples, not a complete or worldwide catalog. Nintendo’s pages do not state publication years for these lists.

Nintendo Canada says card selection and inventory vary by retailer and region. Check a current local listing for the amount you want instead of assuming the examples above are available where the recipient lives.
What else should you check before buying?
- Card marking and account country: Make sure the intended region matches, or confirm the specific same-currency allowance published by Nintendo for that market.
- Seller and format: Buy from a retailer you trust and verify the region on the listing. Availability of physical cards and digital codes varies; the cited guidance does not establish one format as universally preferable.
- Terms for that market: Check the applicable card terms for expiration, fees, refunds, and whether funds can be transferred. Do not assume U.S. terms apply elsewhere.
For U.S. cards, Nintendo’s terms say a card is valid only with U.S. Accounts; after redemption, its balance is associated with one account and is non-transferable. The U.S. terms also state that balances do not expire, carry no fees, and are non-refundable unless required by law. These are U.S.-specific terms, not a worldwide policy. Read Nintendo’s U.S. eShop card terms.

What to do if a card will not redeem
Nintendo error code 2813-0054 means the code is intended for a different country than the Nintendo Account. Confirm the account country and the country or region printed on the card or insert. If they do not match, contact the retailer or find someone with an account that can use the card; Nintendo says it cannot exchange cards across countries.
How to redeem a compatible card
- Open Nintendo eShop on the system and choose the Nintendo Account that should receive the funds.
- Select Enter Code.
- Enter the card’s 16-character code and confirm to add the funds.
Nintendo’s cited instructions cover the United States, Canada, and Mexico and give maximum account balances of $800 USD, $1,100 CAD, and $5,000 MXN, respectively. These are regional limits stated on Nintendo’s support page and may change; check the current instructions if the account is near its limit. See Nintendo’s code-redemption instructions.
