What happened to the Nintendo PlayStation prototype?
Heritage Auctions’ lot record and results release report that the prototype sold on March 6, 2020, for $360,000. Heritage recorded 57 bids. The auction is over; the cited records do not establish that the 2020 lot is currently for sale or identify its present owner.

Guinness World Records also records the $360,000 sale as the most expensive videogame console sold at an online auction in 2020. That is a record claim about a particular sale, not a guide to the broader market value of video-game hardware.
What was the Nintendo PlayStation?
The auction item was a prototype associated with a planned Nintendo and Sony CD-ROM system for the Super Nintendo. It was not the retail Sony PlayStation that followed later. Heritage described the prototype in its January 2020 announcement as “technically the earliest existing prototype for Sony’s first home console video game console and an invaluable piece of video game history.” That is the auction house’s characterization.

Heritage said the unit worked and reported testing it by playing Mortal Kombat with a Super Famicom cartridge. This describes the auction house’s test, not an independent test of the machine.
Was it the only prototype?
Heritage said the auction item was believed to be the only surviving example of approximately 200 pre-production units. Both the surviving-example claim and the approximate production count are the auction house’s qualified description; they should not be treated as independently verified totals.

Does the 2026 Sony MSF-1 museum story refer to the auction lot?
No. A 2026 TechRadar report says the National Videogame Museum acquired a Sony MSF-1, described as an earlier development system for the planned Super Nintendo CD attachment. The report distinguishes that artifact from the Nintendo/Sony prototype sold by Heritage in 2020. It does not establish a new sale or change of ownership for the 2020 auction lot.
