The quarter covered April 1 through June 30, 2026; Nintendo issued its results on August 6. Despite lower revenue, operating, ordinary and net profit all increased, helped in part by higher software sales, stronger IP-related income and refunds of U.S. tariffs previously recorded as costs.
What Nintendo reported for fiscal Q1 2027
The figures below compare April–June 2026 with the same quarter a year earlier. They are Nintendo’s reported results, not market estimates. Nintendo Co., Ltd., FY2027 Q1 Financial Results Explanatory Material, August 6, 2026.
| Measure | Q1 result | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Net sales | ¥517.8 billion | Down 9.5% from ¥572.3 billion |
| Operating profit | ¥142.5 billion | Up 150.5% |
| Operating profit margin | 27.5% | Up 17.6 percentage points |
| Ordinary profit | ¥206.1 billion | Up 115.1% |
| Net profit (profit attributable to owners of parent) | ¥147.4 billion | Up 53.5% |
The headline decline is a change in Nintendo’s consolidated revenue, not a measure of how its shares performed. The figures alone also do not indicate whether the stock is attractively valued or predict future returns.
Why did Nintendo revenue fall?
Nintendo’s dedicated video game platform business generated ¥483.0 billion, down 13.1%. It includes hardware, accessories and amiibo, packaged and downloadable software, download-only software, add-on content, and Nintendo Switch Online. The company said the decline was primarily due to lower hardware unit sales, despite increased software unit sales and yen depreciation.

IP-related income and other revenue rose 107.4% to ¥34.8 billion. This category includes movie and video income, smart-device content, royalties and official-store merchandise. Nintendo cited growth in movie and video income related in part to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Exchange-rate changes added ¥39.0 billion to net sales, according to the company.
How profit increased while revenue declined
Lower revenue did not mean lower profit in this quarter. Operating profit increased 150.5% to ¥142.5 billion, ordinary profit rose 115.1% to ¥206.1 billion, and net profit gained 53.5% to ¥147.4 billion. Gross profit increased 52.0% to ¥281.3 billion, while gross margin rose 22.0 percentage points to 54.3%.

Nintendo attributed the improvement in gross profit and margin to factors including a greater software share of sales and refunds of U.S. tariffs imposed under IEEPA that had previously been recorded as cost of sales. The refunds reduced cost of sales by approximately US$300 million. Nintendo said it had primarily borne those tariffs rather than passing them to consumers through product prices. This cost reduction helped profits; it did not reverse the decline in net sales.
Switch 2 hardware, software and digital sales
Nintendo reported 3.82 million Switch 2 hardware units sold in the quarter, down 34.4% year over year, alongside 9.46 million Switch 2 software units, up 9.2%. The comparison is against the prior-year Q1, which was the Switch 2 launch quarter, so it is not a like-for-like comparison with an ordinary post-launch period.

The hardware and software unit figures are sell-in: sales by the Nintendo group to outside entities, including direct-to-consumer website sales and downloadable software. They should not be read as a count of purchases by individual consumers. Nintendo’s report discusses sell-through separately.
Digital sales were ¥132.7 billion, up 90.0%, and represented 61.5% of software sales for the dedicated video game platform business. Bundled software revenue is classified as hardware sales in Nintendo’s presentation, rather than software or digital sales.

What Nintendo expects for the full fiscal year
Nintendo left its FY2027 consolidated forecast unchanged from the May 8, 2026 forecast. For the fiscal year ending March 2027, management forecast net sales of ¥2,050.0 billion, operating profit of ¥370.0 billion, ordinary profit of ¥430.0 billion and net profit of ¥310.0 billion.
The forecast includes assumptions of ¥150 per U.S. dollar and ¥175 per euro, tariff rates in effect at the end of March 2026, and approximately ¥100.0 billion in cost-of-sales impact from rising component prices—particularly memory—and tariff measures. These are management assumptions and forecasts, not actual results or guarantees. The stated cost impact is not directly comparable with the approximately US$300 million tariff-refund benefit recognized in Q1.
