In April 2024, Facepunch said Nintendo-related items were being removed from the Garry’s Mod Steam Workshop at Nintendo’s request. The studio said it was still working through the wider removal effort, which it described as reviewing “20 years of uploads.” Garry Newman later said he had been assured the takedowns were verified as legitimate by Nintendo. The available sources do not establish whether the process has since been completed.
What Facepunch said about the takedowns
In an April 24, 2024 Steam announcement, the Garry’s Mod team said some Nintendo-related Workshop items had recently been taken down and attributed those takedowns to Nintendo. Facepunch said it was working to remove all Nintendo-related material from the Workshop, and asked users to delete their own related uploads and not upload them again.
The announcement described the work as ongoing: “This is an ongoing process, as we have 20 years of uploads to go through.” That phrase describes the scale of the backlog in Facepunch’s words; it is not a count of files, nor evidence that every upload from those years contained Nintendo material.
What Garry Newman later said
In a follow-up statement reproduced by Nintendo Life on April 26, 2024, Garry Newman, Garry’s Mod creator and Facepunch Studios founder, said: “I have been assured that the takedowns have been verified by Nintendo as legit, so this will now continue as planned. Sorry.” This is Newman’s reported statement about assurances he received—not a direct statement from Nintendo.

What Nintendo’s policy does—and does not—establish
Nintendo’s U.S. Intellectual Property Policy says the company may remove content that appears to infringe intellectual property rights in appropriate circumstances and at its discretion. It also describes a process for submitting claims and says Nintendo may restrict access to its products or terminate accounts of infringers.
That policy provides general context for how Nintendo handles intellectual-property complaints. It does not independently establish that any particular Garry’s Mod upload infringed, verify the notices in this case, or amount to a court ruling. The specific account of the takedowns and verification comes from Facepunch and Newman, as reported at the time.

Is the removal process complete now?
Facepunch described the effort as ongoing in April 2024. The sources cited here do not provide a later authoritative status update or a reliable audit of the Workshop’s current contents, so they cannot confirm whether every Nintendo-related item has been removed. They also do not establish whether any particular upload remains available today.
Contemporary coverage reported the items disappearing around the time of the announcement. For example, WIRED’s April 26, 2024 report described content vanishing from the game and said Nintendo and Newman had not responded to its request for comment at that time. That report is a snapshot from 2024, not a current check of the Workshop.
